2 Samuel 22:4
Introduction:
A. I am beginning a short series tonight on the subject “Worthy Of Our Praise.” There are a lot of things that need to be preached in these last perilous times but I believe that the most important subject is that of “The Lord.” In these dark days, it is easy for our spiritual vision to become impaired by our glaring circumstances.
B. Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (2) Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
C. Looking unto Jesus! The Author began our race and the Finisher will finish our race. “Sir, we would see Jesus!” For a little while, I want to look at the names of God. The great “I AM THAT I AM!”
D. There is no Old Testament argument for the existence of God! What we know about God, all we know, is what God has revealed to us through His presence and His Truth. We cannot know God or anything about God apart from His self-revelation. God has revealed Himself in various ways as recorded in the Word. We kn
ow Him:
1. By His Word in nature – “ the heavens declare the glory of God." They shine! They shout!
2. By His Word spoken through His servants - "at sundry times and in divers manners."
3. Above all, by the incarnation - "the Word was made flesh" in Jesus Christ our Lord. Emmanuel: God with us!
E. The names God uses in revealing Himself show us a great deal about Him, his character; what God is like; what God can do! Each name reveals some distinct attribute or characteristic of the same one blessed God. We do not have many gods but One God.
Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
F. In every age these various names have been the rest and refuge and comfort of God's people. The Bible is full of the names of God and show forth His character; His attributes; His work; His power; His promises; His performance; and His integrity!
G. I will look at two classes of names tonight: the names of God in general and then the name of Jesus, the incarnate Jehovah God. He is worthy to be praised because of His excellent name! Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
THE NAMES OF GOD IN GENERAL

JESUS
"I've tried in vain a thousand ways, My fears to quell, my hopes to raise;
But all I need, the Bible says, is Jesus.
My soul is night, my heart is steel, I cannot see, I cannot feel,
For life, for light, I must appeal to Jesus.
He died, He lives, He reigns, He pleads, There's love in all His words and deeds,
All-All the guilty sinner needs is Jesus.
Though some will mock, though some will blame, In spite of fear, in spite of shame,
I'll go to Him, because His name is Jesus."
He is worthy to be praised because of His excellent name!
