Soteriology: The Doctrine of Salvation - Part 4 - Blessed Assurance

Temple Baptist Church - 10-12-2025

John 10:27-30

Introduction:

A.  I want to finish Soteriology this morning with one of the most attacked aspects of salvation, ETERNAL LIFE, which is the foundation of BLESSED ASSURANCE.  The devil cannot destroy our salvation as it is an act of God, but he can attack our blessed assurance and render us ineffective in both our personal life and our outward testimony.

B.  Most major denominations teach the possibility of the child of God still going to hell after salvation.

1.  Protestants, Pentecostals, and some branches of Baptists believe the unbiblical doctrine of “Falling from Grace.”  Although they may claim to have a blessed assurance, they cannot be 100% certain because the last page of their lives has not yet been written.

2.  If there is a possibility of losing your salvation, then there is a possibility of going to hell after you have been born again, i.e., saved.  Those who teach such false doctrine never preach that false doctrine.  If they believed in “falling from grace,” they would spend most of their time preaching it.

3.  “Falling from Grace” is a damnable doctrine taught by biblically ignorant people.  I say damnable because it incorporates works or personal merit into salvation when the Bible is clear that works and grace destroy each other.  It is God’s mercy and grace that saves the sinner, and it is God’s mercy and grace that keep the saint saved.

4.  I am not saying that all who attend such denominational churches are lost.  I am saying that they are biblically ignorant of God’s righteousness and man’s unrighteousness.  Therefore, God’s righteousness (which is impeccable and immutable) MUST BE IMPUTED to the sinner in salvation.

C.  John chapter ten is one of the most wonderful, quoted chapters in the Bible.  It is a discourse spoken by the Son of God to His children to give them blessed assurance.

D.  Here is an excellent breakdown of verses that explains what God did for His children and the eternal life that He promised.

E.  Often, people quickly read familiar verses of Scripture without seeing what God is saying in them.  John, chapter 10, serves as both an answer to the unbelieving Pharisees and an assurance to those who have come to God by faith in the finished work of Christ, known as the Gospel.

F.  Here is the breakdown of our text.

1.  “My.”  Possession!  As we begin to break down these verses, we need to understand that we that are saved are His!  I thank God that I belong to the Lord and He claims me!  In Him is wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

1 Corinthians 1:30  But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

2.  Sheep.”  Peculiarity!  In a world of “goats,” sheep stand out because they are different, and their natures are different.

Titus 2:11-14  For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,  (12)  Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;  (13)  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;  (14)  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

3.  “Hear my voice.”  Privilege!  God’s people understand God’s Word.  God’s people recognize the small still voice of God in their minds and hearts.

John 10:3-4  To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.  (4)  And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

4.  “And I know them.”  Personal!  We hear much concerning the words “Personal Saviour.”  Salvation is not generic.  The Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of man is not a Biblical doctrine.

Song of Solomon 2:16a  My beloved is mine, and I am his …”

Galatians 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

5.  “And they follow me.”  Pleasure!  Living for Christ is a pleasure.  Battling the flesh is not!

Philippians 1:20-21  According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.  (21)  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

6.  “And I give unto them.”  Purposed!  God did not save us and leave us where He found us.  Salvation is purposed in its change as well as its destination.

2 Peter 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

7.  “Eternal Life.”  Permanence!”  I will deal with this more next week but we need to realize that “saved and forever I am!!

1 John 5:12-13  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.  (13)  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

8.  “And they shall never perish.”  Promise!  I do not know what the future holds and neither do you but I do know Who holds the future and Who holds my hand.  When the roll is call up yonder, I WILL BE THERE!

Jude 24-25  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,  (25)  To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

9.  “Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”  Protection!  In the hand of Christ, in the hand of God the Father, and sealed by the Holy Spirit!

Colossians 3:3  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

10.  “My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.  I and my Father are one.”  Peace!

Conclusion:  Salvation and Eternal Life go together!  You cannot have one without the other. Salvation is Eternal Life, and Eternal Life is Salvation.  How can a child of God who has the Spirit of God living within and the Word of God in their hand believe that they are good enough to go to heaven through personal merit when the Spirit of God tells us that we are sinners at best and the Word of God tells us that we are all sinners?

Biblical Christianity: A Blessed Life

 Temple Baptist Church - 7-23-2025

1 Corinthians 3:23

Introduction:

A.  One more message in 1 Corinthians chapter three before we move on.  We hear the words “Christian” and “Christianity” often while living in the Bible Belt, but do people know what Biblical Christianity is?

1.  Every denomination, “ism” or “schism” falls under the umbrella of “Christendom.” They certainly do not live like they know the true meaning.

2.  While in Bible College, we took a course on cults and were asked to give a personal definition of what a cult was.  My definition was “any religion or denomination that teaches any other way of salvation than through grace alone.”  Anything added to or taken away from grace destroys it.

3.  These “cults” add baptism, good works, communion, sacraments, etc. thus destroying grace.

4.  I said all that to say this: “Christian” or “Christianity” have become generic terms that cover everyone and everything.

John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Ephesians 2:8-9  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  (9)  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Romans 4:3-5  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.  (4)  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.  (5)  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

Galatians 2:16  Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

B.  “Christian” is only found three times in the Bible in one form or another.  Let’s look at these three mentions as they define the life that should define the life of the believer

1.  First Mention of “Christian.”  Acts 11:26  And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

a)  Here we find the First Mention of the word “Christian.” First Mentions are vital to the doctrine, as God, in the First Mention of any subject, will state His mind on the topic and will not change it, but will progressively add to it.

b)  The people of Antioch took notice that these believers were “Christ-like.”  The believers did not call themselves Christians; the unsaved called them such.

2.  The Second Mention of “Christian.”  Acts 26:27-28  King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.  (28)  Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

a)  The Apostle Paul stands before King Agrippa in witness and reminds him of his knowledge of the prophecies of the coming of Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ.  “I know that thou believest” would not make him a child of God.  The difference between a head knowledge and heart knowledge of Christ.

b)  King Agrippa did not speak of being saved, he spoke of what it was to be saved.  “A Christian.”  He knew that salvation would involve a change of heart, mind, and actions.  Once again, Paul did not say that he was a “Christian,” but Agrippa knew he was like Christ.

3.  The Last Mention of “Christian.”  1 Peter 4:16  Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

a)  To be like Christ brought about a change that brought about persecution and suffering.

2 Timothy 3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

b)  Because they hated Christ first, they automatically hate anyone who is like Him, as those who live godly in this world still suffer persecution!

John 15:18  If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

C.  Biblical Christianity is an action, not a position: “be ye transformed,” “be ye followers of me,” “be ye steadfast,” “be ye reconciled to God,” “be ye not unequally yoked,” “be ye separate,” “be ye kind,” “be ye thankful.”

1.  Biblical Christianity is a life of Obligation.  “Ye are Christ’s!”  1 Corinthians 6:19-20  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  (20)  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

a.  I preached on this subject a few weeks ago, but it needs to be re-preached and taught regularly, as the worldview of Christianity is one of freedom to do as you wish.  We live in days of a lack of integrity.

1)  Integrity, in the sense of strength, refers to the state of being whole, undivided, and structurally sound. It means something (like a structure, system, or even a person’s character) can withstand pressure, stress, or adversity without breaking or collapsing.

2)  Examples of integrity:

a)  A building has structural integrity if it can withstand storms, earthquakes, or heavy use without collapsing.

b)  A bridge has integrity if it remains solid and safe despite weight and weather.

c)  A person demonstrates integrity (in the sense of strength) when they remain morally or emotionally strong under pressure or temptation.

d)  In all these cases, integrity implies internal strength, stability, and reliability.

b.  People think that they need to get paid but not to work!  Thus, it is with many believers; they get heaven instead of hell with no obligation to Christ.

c.  The saved have been redeemed with the “precious blood of Christ” as He paid such from His “Bride!”

1)  We are debtors to God.  Romans 8:12-14  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  (13)  For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  (14)  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

2)  We are debtors to each other.  Romans 13:8  Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

3)  We are debtors to the world.  Romans 1:14-15  I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.  (15)  So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.

2.  Biblical Christianity is a life of Opportunity.  “Ye are Christ’s!”

a.  We name the name of Christ!  Jesus Christ, our personal Saviour!  We either choose “A good name” or we choose “great riches.”  Proverbs 22:1  A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

b.  We cannot serve both God and mammon.  Matthew 6:24  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

c.  Paul described this opportunity as his “earnest expectation and my hope.”  Philippians 1:20  According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

d.  Biblical Christianity is a golden Opportunity to make our life count for Christ and souls in this life.  To walk in the light as He is in the light that others will see Christ in us, the Hope of Glory!  We are ambassadors for Christ—his representatives in the present evil world.

3.  Biblical Christianity is a life of Obstruction.  “Ye are Christ’s!” There is and will always be opposition for the child of God who loves and lives for Christ.

a.  The opposition of Satan.  Zechariah 3:1-5  And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.  (2)  And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?  (3)  Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.  (4)  And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.  (5)  And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.

1)  Satan tries to oppose God, but he cannot.

2)  Satan then tries of oppose the children of God, and he can if we allow.

b.  The opposition of our flesh.  Romans 7:14-20  For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.  (15)  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.  (16)  If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.  (17)  Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.  (18)  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.  (19)  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.  (20)  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Conclusion:  We are His and He is ours!  1 Corinthians 3:23  And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

Left Behind

 Temple Baptist Church - 3-6-2024

John 14:1-6

Introduction:

A.  Disclaimer time.  Don’t you just love having to give a disclaimer because of the lack of biblical knowledge of most people?  So many people who never read the Bible get their “theology” from people who never read the Bible!  Oh, they read but they have no spiritual understanding.

B.  Some years back, the “Left Behind” series hit the bookstores and people everywhere what to know what was coming and where they stood with God.  This series was heretical.  Its vdery premise flew in the face of God as it contradicted what the Bible teaches about Eschatology.  I am not here tonight to either discuss or fix that.

C.  We teach these verses to show the unsaved how to be saved!  Jesus Christ alone!  His death, burial, and resurrection called the gospel is where salvation is found.  I have no problem at all with the application of the verses but that is not the interpretation within the context.

D.  The context is to saved men who feared being left behind, supposedly alone, and told that they would be with the Lord later not understanding where He was going or how to get there.  Both Peter and Thomas along with the other disciples (they allowed these two men to be the spokesmen), were afraid and confused.

E.  The questions asked:

1.  Peter’s problem was two-fold:  John 13:36-37    Simon Peter said unto him, (1) Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards.  (37)  Peter said unto him, (2) Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake.

2.  Thomas’ problem was two-fold:  John 14:5  Thomas saith unto him, Lord, (1) we know not whither thou goest; and (2) how can we know the way?

3.  Now, I want to give these disciples a break!  Don’t you just hate it when someone will not even give you the benefit of a doubt?  They had no Bible!  When the Lord spoke of resurrection, they had no examples other than Lazarus and it was the Lord who visibly and publicly raised him from the dead.

F.  Verse 6 does not settle a salvation problem though it does settle Who salvation is found in.  Christ!  These disciples did not need to be saved and the understood that salvation was through Jesus Christ. They were both saved!  Peter called Jesus Lord twice and Thomas called Jesus Lord once in the context.

G.  The context of verse 6 is both directional and correctional.

1. Their questions were not caused by a lack of salvation but of insecurity in the impending absence of the Lord.  Lord, you are leaving, and we cannot go with you, but you said we will follow you to where you are.

2.  Jesus’ answer was correctional.  How do we know where that is, and how do we get there?

a)  Religions and denominations here and around the world believe that the way to heaven either before salvation or after salvation is a “path” of their own making.  If you try to live right, treat your neighbor right, keep all the rules and regulations, you just might make it to heaven.

b)  Jesus Christ is the only Way of salvation, and He is the only Way to get to heaven!

3.  Jesus’ answer was directional.

a)  How do we get from this life and place to our eternal life and place?

b)  The answer is the same!  Jesus Christ!  He said that it is My Father’s house (heaven) and I, Jesus, will take you there!

H.  Though we are saved, and have the truth, there are times when we are fretful and insecure.

1.  “I am the Way!”  Not just the way of salvation but because Christ is coming back for them.  The way to somewhere has a starting point, a traveling point, and a finishing point.

a.  Jesus did not say that He was the end of the trip because He would be in His Father’s house.  He simply said that He was the Way!  That is from the start of the trip throughout the trip until we end up where He is in the Father’s house.

b.  As the Lord stood on the right hand of the Father as Stephen was dying, He will be with us from start to finish when we go through the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

c.  They, as well as we, will not have to cross Jordan alone.

d.  If we live until the rapture of the Church, it is the Lord Himself who will descend from heaven with a shout and the voice of the archangel.  If we die first, we will fear no evil because He will walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death with us.  Psalm 23.

e.  Jesus is the Way home!  He said that He would come and get them!  John 14:3  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

2.  “I am the Truth!”  The Lord’s promises for both the present and the future are secure.  John 14:2  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

a.  Our Lord told His disciples that He must go while they must abide.  Yet, the Truth would remain with them.

b.  The disciples did not know at this time about the revelations that our Lord would later give to them and neither did they know about the fullness of the Holy Ghost Who would descend upon them.  He simply said, “Trust Me!”

c.  The Lord will say in a later chapter of John that it was expedient that He go away, otherwise the Comforter would not come.  Instead of dwelling with God, God would be dwelling within them.

d.  Grace and strength for every mile of the trip.  Their needs constantly being met by their Lord.  Sometimes, in our lives during hard times, God’s promises happen a thrill per minute as He is always on time to meet our needs.

e.  The Truth that they would one day be “where I am.”  God’s promises sure and secure!

3.  “I Am the Life!”  The lives of the apostles are getting ready for a drastic change. It is in Christ that we live, move, and have our being.  Colossians 3:1-4  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  (2)  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  (3)  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

a.  Christ is their spiritual life.  Acts 4:12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

b.  Christ is their temporal life.  It is in Christ that we live, move, and have our being.  Colossians 3:1-3  If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.  (2)  Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.  (3)  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

c.  Christ is their eternal life. Matthew 28:20  “and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

Colossians 3:4  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

4.  “No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.  Simply said, you have nothing at all to worry about it.  As salvation is all of Christ, the rest of the trip at that point is all of Christ.  We will all end up at “where I am!”

Conclusion:  Their hearts were troubled because their future seemed to be insecure.  Often our hearts become troubled and insecure.  The answer to troubled hearts is the same for both the disciples and us today.  The Lord Jesus used these verses to reassure them that they would shortly be “where I Am!”

Blessed Assurance - Part 4- Assurance Made Simple

Temple Baptist Church - 7-12-2023

John 10:28-30

Introduction:

A.  For the next couple of weeks, I want to continue preaching on the subject of “Blessed Assurance” because of the effects that both assurance and the lack thereof have on our lives, usefulness, and peace of mind and heart.

B.  So many of God’s people are rendered virtually useless because of this issue.  It is for this reason that Satan, the Accuser of the Brethren, spends so much time causing doubt in the life of God’s people.

C.  I just want to break down these verses that we read tonight to make assurance both Biblical and simple.

D.  Often, people quickly read familiar verses of Scripture without seeing what God is saying in them.  John, chapter 10, is both an answer to the unbelieving Pharisees and assurance to those who have come to God by faith in the finished work of Christ called the Gospel.

1.  “My.”  Possession!  As we begin to break down these verses, we need to understand that we that are saved are His!  I thank God that I belong to the Lord and He claims me!  In Him is wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
