Theology: The Doctrine of The Holy Spirit - Pneumatology - Part 2 - Divine in His Performance

 Temple Baptist Church - 6-22-2025

John 14:15-18; John 16:7-15

Introduction:

A. Once again, let me reiterate that this will not be a Systematic Theology study of Pneumatology.

1. However, in the context of John 14-16, we discover some important aspects about the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit.

2. The Person is the Holy Spirit, and when speaking of the work of the Holy Spirit, the name the Holy Ghost is used.

B. Last week, I “scratched the surface” on the Person of the Holy Spirit. He is God; He is ALL God! Not your conscience, not an influence, God residing within the believer.

C. In John 14:16a, our Lord said, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter.”

1. Not a similar one, but “another,” one just like Jesus Christ, with all power and attributes. This statement is a declaration of the Comforter’s Person.

2. Today, God the Father sits on His throne, Jesus Christ sits at His right hand as our High Priest, Intercessor, and Advocate. The Holy Spirit is active on this earth, doing the will of the Father.

D. John 14:16b -18 is a declaration of the Comforter’s Presence and Performance. “That he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

1. He will come to you. “He shall give you … I will”

2. He will abide with you. “That He may abide with you”

3. He will remain with you forever. “for ever”

4. He will lead you into all truth. “Even the Spirit of truth”

5. He will indwell you. “And shall be in you”

6. He will comfort you. “I will not leave you comfortless”

7. He will be the Spirit of Christ, working hand-in-hand with Jesus Christ. “I will come to you”

E. Now, our text. In verse 7, we find that it was “expedient” for Christ to go away.

1. “Expedient” – beneficial, necessary, advantageous, to be better for, the best thing.

a) None of this did the disciples understand in their grief and sense of loss, but they fully understood it in Acts, chapter 2, when the Holy Spirit came upon them, empowering them to preach the gospel in other languages boldly.

b) Notice I did not say unknown tongues, as the word “unknown” is always an italicized word when speaking of tongues in the Bible. Italicized words are those that were inserted, not translated, into a text for clarification by the translators. They can confuse.

c) It is good to learn to also read a text omitting the italicized words. You will find that they are not needed for our understanding of what God said.

2. Another Comforter and Comfortless. Two words need to be explained: Comforter and comfortless.

a) Comforter (παράκλητος paraklētos par-ak'-lay-tos) in the Greek means to be summoned to the side of or to come to the aid of the comfortless. Our Lord said that it was “expedient” that He went away but would pray the Father to send the Comforter in Christ’s stead. While Christ comforted the disciples for 3 ½ years, the Comforter would abide with them forever.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

b) Comfortless in Greek comes from the Greek word ὀρφανός orphanos or-fan-os', from which we derive our English word "orphan." Orphans have no families and need to be adopted into good homes where they will be loved and cared for . Because of their adoption into the family of God by the Comforter, the child of God has a spiritual family: our Father who is in heaven, our Saviour and Friend who loves us, and the Holy Spirit that indwells us. Aren’t you glad that you are not an orphan

In all of our sorrows, come what may! Death, sickness, persecution, trials and tribulations, personal failure, discouragement, disappointment, defilement, both real and imagined. Our Lord will not leave us comfortless, orphaned!

F. The work of the Holy Spirit. He is the Agent, the Activity of God on Earth! In the First and Last Mentions of the Holy Spirit, we find His activity.

1. The Spirit Moved. God spoke, but the Spirit Moved!

Genesis 1:1-3 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (3) And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

2. The Spirit Spoke. The Spirit will always be Drawing men.

Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

G. The Work of the Holy Spirit would take a lot of time, as there is so much that He does, but I will stay within the context of our Scripture. Here are five things that the Holy Spirit will do in our text:

1. He will reprove the world of sin. “Of sin, because they believe not on me;”

a. The word “reprove” means “to convict.” “Reprove” is a legal term in the way a judge or a prosecuting attorney presents evidence to bring a conviction.

b. The Holy Spirit of God presents evidence in the heart that brings us to a place of conviction, requiring a decision to be made.

c. The greatest of all sins is stated here. It is the sin of rejection! Rejecting Christ is the sin that damns the unrepentant and unbelieving to a devil’s hell for all eternity.

d. There must be a conviction before we can turn in faith and trust to Jesus Christ.

2. He will reprove the world of righteousness. “Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;”

Romans 4:24-25 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; (25) Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

a. Jesus Christ was delivered for our offenses and was raised again for our justification. Christ took our guilt upon Himself, dying in our place on that cross. Salvation is far more than just forgiveness of sin and going to heaven. Salvation is about the righteousness of Christ being imputed to us so that we stand before God clothed in absolute purity that only God has. This one verse says it all.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Philippians 3:8-9 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, (9) And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

b. Our lack of righteousness. I say this so often because religious people always mix personal merit to some degree with what Christ did for us and what He was made unto us.

Isaiah 64:6-7 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (7) And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.

Titus 3:5-6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; (6) Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

Romans 4:4-5 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. (5) But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

c. The song “The Solid Rock” says, “Dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.”

Jude 24-25 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, (25) To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

3. He will reprove the world of judgment. “Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.”

a. Satan has already been judged!

Ezekiel 28:16-18 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. (17) Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. (18) Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

b. The unbeliever has already been judged.

John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

c. The unbeliever will be judged.

Revelation 20:12-13 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

4. He will guide the believer into all truth. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth”

a. Through the gift of the Scriptures.

2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

b. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

5. He will glorify Jesus Christ. “He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you” The religious world makes much of the Holy Ghost and attributes unbiblical work to Him that He does not do. We find here that the Holy Ghost will ALWAYS point us to Christ, not to His work. The Spirit of God never speaks of Himself; He points man to Christ.

Theology: The Doctrine of The Holy Spirit - Pneumatology - Part 1 - Divine in His Person

Temple Baptist Church - 6-8-2025

John 14:15-18

Introduction:

A.  The context of our text.

1. In John chapter 14, the Lord Jesus prepares His disciples for what is to come: death, burial, and resurrection.  He begins this discourse with “Let not your hearts be troubled.”

2.  Heretofore, our Lord had been their Comforter.  Notice the words “another Comforter” in John 14:16.  “Another” means one who is like or the same.  Verse 26 says, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name.”

John 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

3.  These are two beautiful verses, 16 and 26, declare the Trinity.  In verse 16, “I” is Jesus Christ, the “Father” is obvious, and “Comforter” is the Holy Spirit.  In verse 26, “Comforter,” which is the Holy Ghost, “whom the Father will send,” and “in my name” who is Jesus Christ!

4.  “Another” is key here.  The Holy Spirit is God and is completely like God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. This leads to another phrase found in verse 18, where our Lord said, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you!”  Romans 8:9 and 1 Peter 1:11 equate the Holy Spirit as “the Spirit of Christ.”

5.  An amazing verse!  The Person of the Holy Spirit will completely take the place of and be the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of the believer.

Matthew 28:20  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Hebrews 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

John 14:8-10  Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.  (9)  Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?  (10)  Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

The Trinity – three in one that make up one.  Three distinct Persons that are eternally united.

6.  **Acts 2:1-13.  The fulfillment is found in Acts chapter 2, verses 4-8: the fullness, the filling of the Holy Ghost.  The fulfillment of the coming of the Comforter has been skewed by the “tongues” in our day.  Something to be discussed more fully in the days to come, but the tongues spoken were 16 known languages, each understood by 16 different hearers.  Unknown to the speaker because they were not fluent in these languages, but known by the people who spoke them as their “heart languages.”

B. The Holy Spirit is mentioned over 100 times in the Old Testament. In the New Testament alone, there are about 261 passages that refer to the Holy Spirit. He is mentioned 56 times in the Gospels, 57 times in the book of Acts, 112 times in the Pauline Epistles, and 36 times in the other books of the New Testament.

C. Despite this, there is considerable confusion and misunderstanding regarding the Holy Spirit. Many cults deny that He is a Person and that He is God, claiming the Holy Spirit is merely a “force” or an “influence” or the “conscience.”

D.  Conversely, the Charismatic Movement, which has significantly penetrated today’s religious world, places enormous emphasis on the Holy Spirit—teaching practices such as “ecstatic and unintelligible utterances” in some unknown spiritual tongue (biblical tongues were known languages to the hearer, but not the speaker), along with false “healings” and “exorcisms.”

E.  In Theology, we find the word “Pneumatology,” which is derived from the Greek word Pneuma, which means “breath” or “spirit,” which metaphorically describes a “non-material Being.”  Pneumatology describes His person, deity, personality, and work.

F.  Who is the Holy Spirit?  The Holy Spirit is referred to in many ways in the Bible.  Here are some: Holy Spirit, which refers to His person; Holy Ghost, which refers to His work; Spirit of God, which refers to His union in the Trinity; Comforter, which refers to His solace to the believer; and Spirit, the One who indwells the believer.

1.  He is God and one with God, the third person of the Trinity. The Bible declares the Trinity, though the word is not found there.  However, the principle and truth of the Trinity are consistently found throughout the Bible.

2. I often quote a Theological statement that I learned years ago, which bears this truth.

“God is one God, manifesting Himself in three persons—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.  These three are all co-equal in all power and attributes.”

3.  The Holy Spirit is eternal.  Hebrews 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

              4. He is Omnipresent.  Psalms 139:7-10  Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?  (8)  If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. (9)  If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;  (10)  Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

5.  He is Omniscient.  1 Corinthians 2:10-11  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.  (11)  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

6.  He is Omnipotent.  Matthew 12:28  But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

G.  The Holy Spirit’s relationship in the lives of both believers and non-believers.

2. The Holy Spirit’s relationship with the lost sinner.  John 16:7-8  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  (8)  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

a)  The Holy Spirit convicts the Sinner.  “reprove”

b)  The Holy Spirit convinces the Sinner.  “of righteousness … judgment”

c)  The Holy Spirit draws the Sinner. John 6:44  No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

d)  The Holy Spirit converts the Sinner.  John 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

3.  The Holy Spirit’s relationship with the believer: born again, blood-washed, eternally saved children of God through faith in the Gospel and repentance from sin.

a)  The Holy Spirit baptizes the Saint.  1 Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

b)  The Holy Spirit seals the Saint.  Ephesians 4:30  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

c)  The Holy Spirit fills the Saint.  Ephesians 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

d)  The Holy Spirit communes with the Saint.  2 Corinthians 13:14  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. The second epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi, a city of Macedonia, by Titus and Lucas.

e)  The Holy Spirit prays for the Saint.  Romans 8:26  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

f)  The Holy Spirit teaches the Saint.  John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

g)  The Holy Spirit comforts the Saint.  John 14:26  But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

h)  The Holy Spirit corrects the Saint.  Hebrews 9:14  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Spirit!

H.  He is the Holy!  Holiness is a definite quality that is attributed to the Lord.  There are over ninety references in which the Spirit of God is called “the holy Spirit of God.  As the holy one that lives within us, He alone can make us have true holiness.

J.  The Holy Spirit bears record of our salvation in heaven.  1 John 5:6-13  This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.  (7)  For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.  (8)  And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.  (9)  If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.  (10)  He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.  (11)  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  (12)  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.  (13)  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

K.  The Holy Spirit only glorifies Christ Jesus and not Himself.  John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Conclusion:  Don’t let somebody’s teaching or preaching rob you of the joy of knowing more about the Holy Spirit as God.  He is in the Godhead, coequal with the Son and the Father. In D. L. Moody’s sermon on “The Holy Spirit,” he said that a man came up to him and said, “Mr. Moody, you speak as if you had a monopoly on the Holy Spirit.”  Mr. Moody’s reply was, “No, decidedly, no! But I do trust that the Holy Spirit has a monopoly on me.”  The question of the hour is this:  Does the Holy Spirit have a monopoly on you?”

The Work of the Holy Spirit

 Temple Baptist Church - 5-15-2024

John 16:7-15

Introduction:

A. Once again, let me reiterate that this will not be a Systematic Theology study of Pneumatology. But because of the context found in John 14-16, we find some important things about the Person and Word of the Holy Spirit. The Person is the Holy Spirit and when speaking of the work of the Holy Spirit, the name the Holy Ghost is used.

B. Last week, I “scratched the surface” on two things: the Work of the Comforter to the comfortless. The disciples’ hearts were “filled with sorrow.” Two words need to be explained: Comforter and comfortless:

1. Comforter (παράκλητος paraklētos par-ak'-lay-tos) in the Greek means to be summoned to the side of or to come to the aid of the comfortless. Our Lord said that it was “expedient” that He went away but would pray the Father to send the Comforter in Christ’s stead. While Christ comforted the disciples for 3 ½ years, the Comforter would abide with them forever.

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

2. Comfortless in the Greek comes from the word Greek word ὀρφανός orphanos or-fan-os' from which we get our English word orphan. Orphans have no families but the child of God has a spiritual family: our Father which is in heaven; our Saviour and Friend who love us; and the Holy Spirit that indwells us. Aren’t you glad that you are not an orphan.

John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Psalms 27:10 When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

All of our sorrows, come what may! Death, sickness, persecutions, trials and tribulations, personal failure, discouragement, disappointment, defilement, both real and imagined. He will not leave us comfortless: orphaned!

C. The Second name given to the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of truth,” which I will look at in a little more detail tonight.

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

D. Why do people not get saved and why do some saved never grow? The verses that we read to night are the problem.

1. There are those who reject Christ CANNOT know the truth. “seeth him not … neither knoweth him”

1 Corinthians 2:11-14 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. (12) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (13) Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. (14) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

2. Both lost and the carnal saint oft times who reject the Bible CANNOT know the truth! The truth is available in our day.

Zechariah 7:11-12 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. (12) Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.

Acts 7:54-57 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. (55) But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, (56) And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. (57) Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

E. The Work of the Spirit of Truth:

1. Verse 8. John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

a. The Holy Spirit teaches us about Sin. John 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;

1) The Truth about Adamic Sin.

Romans 5:12a Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin;

Psalms 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

2) The Truth about Willful Sin. Romans 5:12b and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

3) The Truth about Recompense for Sin.

a) Temporal Recompense. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

b) Eternal Sense. Revelation 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

b. The Holy Spirit teaches us about Righteousness. John 16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

1) Lack of Righteousness of the Sinner. Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

2) Perfect Righteousness of the Saviour. Romans 10:3-4 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. (4) For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

3) Imputed Righteousness of the Saint. Romans 4:20-25 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; (21) And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. (22) And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. (23) Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; (24) But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; (25) Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

3. The Holy Spirit teaches us about Judgment. John 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

a) The Judgment of Satan and fallen angels. Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Revelation 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

b) The Judgment of Sinners and their works. Revelation 20:11-15 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. (12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (13) And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. (14) And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (15) And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

2. Verse 12-13. John 16:12-13 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. (13) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

a. In Depth Teaching. “he will guide you into all truth”

Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

b. In Inspired Revelation. “and he will shew you things to come.” The canon of Scripture was not Plenary until after the death of the Apostles as they would continue to write under the inspiration of God in their lives. After their death, the canon of Scripture was Plenary, complete.

2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

c. In Prophecy. Eschatology. Things to come. Knowing what the future holds and Who holds the future, we can face tomorrow and all our tomorrows in faith confidence through faith. “I do not know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow and Who holds my life in His hands!”

Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. Verse 14. John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

a. The Holy Spirit does not speak of or exalt Himself. Be careful around people who constantly speak of the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.

b. The Holy spirit ALWAYS glorifies the Saviour and not Himself! We certainly honor and love Him, but He only speaks of and directs us to our Lord.
