Troubled Hearts - Part 2 - The Cure for a Troubled Heart

 Temple Baptist Church - 2-28-2024

John 14:1-4

Introduction:

A.  Last week, we dissected the first part of verse 1: “Let not your heart be troubled.”  The Lord is leaving, and the apostles are going to have to “step up” and take on the work of the ministry.  Introduction over!

B.  We find several things in the verses that will help us in the last perilous times.  I want to look at these 4 verses tonight so as to encourage our people during these discouraging days.  Six things I want to look at tonight to encourage your hearts.

1.  A Fear to Overcome.  “Let not you heart be troubled.”

a.  We live in the worst spiritual time in history.  There is so much sin and confusion today that many if not most have troubled hearts.

b.  Disappointing times, discouraging times, deluding times, defiling times.

c.  Sin is rampant and accepted as the norm; confusion comes at us from every side; voices of every kind to hear.  It is of no wonder that the believers is exhorted to assemble “so much the more” as we see the world set up for both the realization of Antichrist and the acceptance of his philosophy which is totally anti-God.

d.  The “falling away” is in its last stages.  There have always been good men of God and good churches in which to find the preaching, exhorting, and help that we need.  Now, they are about as scarce as “hens’ teeth!”  Another young pastor resigned his church this week to go into evangelism.  Another church will be trying to find someone willing to come pastor the flock and hopefully stay!

e.  We find few believers who will buck the status quo and live in such a way to make a difference.  Most are too worldly minded to be of any heavenly good.

f.  Today, we find rejection by the masses, spiritual defeats, and multiple failures that all of us have experienced.  These inward, negative feelings can destroy us.

g.  It is here that we must be very careful! Often the most painful wounds are not the scars that are outwardly seen, but the hidden wounds deep in the heart. Being hidden, they are often the most dangerous.

g.  These things cause spiritual discouragement and troubled hearts.  When our faith is weakened, we tend to stop pressing toward the mark and finishing our race for Christ.

2.  A Faith to Believe.  “Ye believe in God, believe also in me!”

a.  These disciples had no problem believing in the Jehovah God of the Old Testament but needed to have that same faith in Christ Jesus.

b.  Christ had always provided their every need from the physical to the spiritual.  They had been eye witness to all His miracles but these physical miracles were not enough to inspire them to trust Him wholly.

Matthew 8:26-27  And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.  (27)  But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

“What manner of man is this” was not the faith needed to calm the heart.

c.  Notice that Jesus said, “Believe also in me!”  Here we find the faith that will cure the troubled heart.

1 John 5:4-5  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  (5)  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God

3.  A Future that is Secure.  “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you!”

a.  Our future is secured through the promises of God.  Our heavenly homes are await us and they are not “rooms” or “little cabins over in the corner of Glory Land.”  They are beyond our comprehension, and they are there!  “Are”

b.  They are not being built as we speak, they are already there and have been from eternity past.

c.  We are not “sending up timbers” because they are “ivory palaces.”  “Home sweet home!”

Psalms 45:8  All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.

Revelation 21:1-4  And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.  (2)  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  (3)  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.  (4)  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

4.  A Foundation to Stand Upon.  “And if I go and prepare a place for you.”  The Blood of Christ!  The blood to be applied to the Mercy Seat in heaven. There were two Ascensions of Christ back to heaven.  This was accomplished in two parts:

a.  The First Ascension as High Priest with His Own Blood – John 20:17  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Hebrews 9:11-14  But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;  (12)  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.  (13)  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:  (14)  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

b.  The Second Ascension - Acts 1:9-11  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.  (10)  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;  (11)  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

5.  A Fellowship that Awaits.  “I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

a.  We will be with Him.  1 Thessalonians 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

b.  We will be like Him.  1 John 3:2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

6.  A Fight to Finish.  John 13:36-37a  Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. (37a)  Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now?

a.  There is a work to be done.  Matthew 9:36-38  But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.  (37)  Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;  (38)  Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

b.  There is a race to be run.  Hebrews 12:1-2  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,  (2)  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

My Heart is Fixed

 Temple Baptist Church - 12-11-2022

Psalm 108:1-13

Introduction:

A.  The word “fixed” is used only 4 times in the Bible with three of these brief mentions being in the Old Testament concerning the heart and once in the New Testament speaking of the gulf between hell and Abraham’s Bosom.

B.  The word fixed is only used one time in the New Testament and I believe that the context in which the word is found gives a wonderful definition and description.

Luke 16:26  And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.  (The gulf in Hades was fixed between Abraham’s Bosom and the flames of Hell.  It was immovable.  It was impassable.  It was unchangeable.)

C.  Each of the Old Testament examples of the word “fixed” deal with giving praise to God in times of trouble.

1.  In Psalms 57, it is in the context of great persecution from David’s enemies.  It is a time of great trouble, and his heart is fixed upon the Lord in worship.  Beholding His glorious person instead of his great persecution.

2.  In Psalms 108, it is in the context of David’s great conquests against the enemies of Israel.  He is looking to God for both strength and victory.

3.  In Psalms 112, is in the context of evil tidings.  In all three of these mentions, the heart is fixed in the midst of almost over whelming adversity.  Instead of fixing the heart upon problems, the admonition is to fix the heart upon the Lord of Heaven!

D.  Fixed defined.  Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines fixed as: Settled; established; firm; fast; stable.

E.  We, because of our weakness of flesh, are prone to fix our hearts upon the circumstances instead of the Lord who controls them!  May the Lord help us to fix our hearts upon Him.

1.  We know that He is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.

2.  We know that nothing is impossible with Him and He certainly “thinketh upon me!”

3.  We know that we are worth many sparrows and yet not one of these falls to the ground without His knowledge.

4.  We know that He can and will supply our physical needs in this life.

5.  We know that He goes before us and has suffered all that we will ever suffer.

6.  We know that He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities and ever liveth to make intercession at the right hand of the Father.

7.  We know that He is coming for us as He said and that we will live throughout eternity in His presence in fullness of joy AND YET WE STILL WORRY BECAUSE OUR HEARTS ARE NOT FIXED!

F.  Our lives are in His hand - John 10:28-29  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.   My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

Hebrews 12:2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Job 23:13-14  But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.  For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.

G.  A fixed heart does not:

1.  Look Back - Luke 9:62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

2.  Look Around - Matthew 14:30  But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

3.  Look Down - Psalms 43:5  Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and my God.

H.  A fixed heart looks up - Psalms 121:1   I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

1.  A Fixed Heart is an Assured Heart – 1 John 3:18-21  My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.  Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

2.  A Fixed Heart is a Trusting Heart - Psalms 112:7  He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD

Psalms 56:3  What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

(Trusting Him in spite of it all!)

3.  A Fixed Heart is a Praising Heart - Psalms 57:7  My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.

Isaiah 24:15  Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. (Praising Him in spite of it all!)

4.  A Fixed Heart is a Panting Heart - Psalms 42:1-2  As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.  My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

Psalms 119:10  With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.

5.  A Fixed Heart is a Serving Heart - Job 13:15  Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

Job 23:11  My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.

6.  A Fixed Heart is a Stable Heart - John 20:27-28  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust [it] into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.  And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

The Issues of the Heart - A Merry Heart

 Temple Baptist Church - 7-25-2021

Proverbs 17:22

Introduction:

A.  My theme verse is Proverbs 4:23, which says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

1.  I continue to emphasize that we are made in the image of God: a trichotomy, body-world conscious, soul-self-conscious, and spirit, God conscious.

2.  If out of the heart (or the soul) are the “issues” of life, and the bible says that it is so, then that which proceeds from with the soul of each of us is what we allow to issue forth.  “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

3.  If the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, and it is, then the natural man is utterly depraved and nothing that proceeds from the natural can be good!  “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing.”

4.  Therefore, I can reasonably say that we, as God’s children, have the responsibility of controlling our “issues.”

5.  It all comes down to this: if you want to be sad and have a broken (downcast, disquieted, disappointed, discouraged) spirit that drieth the bones, you have that choice.

Leviticus 17:11  For the life of the flesh is in the blood … (And the blood comes from the marrow of the bone.  Dried bones equal a lack of life giving blood.)

6.  Or you can choose to put a merriment in your soul and a smile on your face.

7.  Problems neither go away through tears or laughter so choose the later.

B.  This morning, I want to deal with one of my favorite verses:  “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”

1.  I love this verse!  I love to laugh, joke around, and have a great time.  You can ask my wife, I meet no strangers.  One of my sons said, “One day, Dad is going to get maced!”  That may be but, in a world full of trouble and worry, laughter is essential for survival.

2.  For the most part, I have found people to have a sense of humor and laughter is good for the soul.  I lady in the checkout line at Wal-Mart (I was picking at her) said, “Never lose your joy.  I lost mine a few months ago.”  She was referring to the death of her husband but what she said stuck with me.  People need to laugh.

3.  Remember the words: “Smile a while and give your face a rest.”  It takes a lot fewer muscles to smile than to frown and frowning will give you a headache!

C.  The word “merry” is found 28x in your King James Bible.  It is an outward thing whereas Joy is an inward thing.  Merry can but does not necessarily mean happy which relies upon our happenings.

D.  “Merry:” Cheerful in a lively sense, to cheer up; to be glad; to have joy; to brighten up.  There are three verses dealing with a “merry heart” that I want to look at for a few minutes:

1.  A Merry Heart Maketh A Cheerful Countenance – Proverbs 15:13  A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

a)  Most people today look like a mule that has been eating saw briers!  Everywhere you go in this world, you see sad faces, hear cursing and complaining!

Men live lives of quiet desperation!

b)  People are dissatisfied and disgruntled.  This should not be the lot of the child of God.  We should be a satisfied, happy people.  We are someone going somewhere!

2.  A Merry Heart Maketh A Continual Feast – Proverbs 15:15  All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

a)  Enjoyment of life!  We are so blessed and yet people are still not satisfied and often live lives of quiet desperation!  A feast is a merry event!

I am not talking about vacations; I am talking about all day and every day!  The joy of the Lord is your strength!

b)  I remember the old family reunions back in the 50’s and 60’s when our family would come from all over and spend the day together eating, pitching horse shoes, and just sitting around catching up on family news.  It was a day looked for with great anticipation.

c)  I sure miss those days.  We had a ball.

3.  A Merry Heart Doeth Good Like A Medicine – Proverbs 17:22  A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

a)  A smiling face or “drieth the bones?”  A choice that we make.  I tell people that you can laugh about your problems, or you can cry about them.  Neither will change the problems, but laughter can lessen the pain.

For to me to live is Christ!  When Christ, who is your life, shall appear.

b)  Laughter is a medicine with no ill side effects.  Can you imagine a medicine prescribed for you with all good and no bad side effects?  Today, they send you several pages of what may happen to you if you take the meds prescribed.

E.  HOW TO HAVE A MERRY HEART

1.  A Merry Heart Comes Through Conversion – You will never be happy until you know Christ.

Luke 10:20  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

2.  A Merry Heart Comes Through Contentment – You will never be happy until you know contentment.

1 Timothy 6:6  But godliness with contentment is great gain.

Hebrews 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

3.  A Merry Heart Comes Through Commitment – trusting the Lord in every part of your life.  (Whatever my lot thou hast TAUGHT me to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul!”)

2 Timothy 1:12  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheles I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Psalms 37:5  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

4.  A Merry Heart Comes Through Consecration - Matthew 10:39  He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. lose life and find it – most people never find their lives because they never lose their lives!  “Let me lose my life and find it, Lord, in thee!”

Conclusion:  God wants you to be merry, happy, in this life even though it is full of troubles and sorrows.

You will never be happy until you are converted!

You will never be happy until you are content!

You will never be happy until you are committed!

You will never be happy until you are consecrated!
