The Terror of the Lord

Temple Baptist Church - 1-23-2008

2 Corinthians 5:11

Introduction:

A. As Paul finished speaking about the impending Judgment Seat of Christ, he mentions another judgment by saying, “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”

B. Some make the erroneous statement that this also speaks of the Judgment Seat of Christ. Notice with me the pronouns that the Holy Spirit is and has been using.

Vs. 1 – “our” and “we”

Vs. 2 – “we” and “our”

Vs. 3 – “we”

Vs. 4 – “we” and “we”

Vs. 5 – “us” and “us”

Vs. 6 – “we” and “we” and “we”

Vs. 7 – “we”

Vs. 8 – “we”

Vs. 9 – “we” and “we”

Vs. 10 – “we”

Vs. 11 – “we”

ALL OF THESE ARE FIRST PERSON PLURAL PRONOUNS! In the first person plural, the speaker is referring to himself along with others in the same group.

Vs. 11 – “WE PERSUADE MEN!”

THE WORD “MEN” IS IN THE THIRD PERSON PLURAL! In the third person plural, the speaker is referring to others than himself and his group – the first person plural is speaking about a third person plural. The third person plural is not a part of the first person plural.

C. Paul has quit talking TO SOMEONE and is now talking ABOUT SOMEONE.

D. There is a great analogy between the Judgment Seat of Christ and the Great White Throne Judgment and the Holy Spirit has placed both here in the same context. Look at these verses:

1 Peter 4:17-18 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God? 18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

E. If God is to judge our works is such great detail, so will He also judge the works of the unsaved. The difference being that our sins are paid for in full and theirs are not!

F. Revelation 20:11-15

1. The Great White Throne Judgment Will Be Personal – “small and great”

2. The Great White Throne Judgment Will Be Precise – “books were opened…another book was opened, which is the book of life”

3. The Great White Throne Judgment Will Be Perfect – “and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works…and they were judged every man according to their works.”

4. The Great White Throne Judgment Will Be Permanent – “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

G. Why the “terror of the Lord?” Because:

1. Death Is Inevitable - Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

a. For The Child Of God, Death Is Wonderful - 2 Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence [is] fulness of joy; at thy right hand [there are] pleasures for evermore.

Philippians 1:21-23 For to me to live [is] Christ, and to die [is] gain. 22 But if I live in the flesh, this [is] the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. 23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

b. For The Sinner, Death Is Fearful - Hebrews 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Hebrews 10:31 [It is] a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God [is] a consuming fire.

2. Judgment Is Inescapable - John 5:28-29 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

a. For The Child Of God, There Will Be No Reprisal - 1 Corinthians 3:15 If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1 John 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

Psalms 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, [so] far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

Romans 4:8 Blessed [is] the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

b. For The Sinner, There Will Be Retribution - Revelation 20:12-13 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Jeremiah 32:19 Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes [are] open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

Matthew 16:27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Romans 2:6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

3. Hell Is Incomprehensible - Matthew 3:12 Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

a. For The Child Of God, Eternity Is Exciting – Revelation 21:1-5 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. 5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Revelation 22:1-5 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: 4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

b. For The Sinner, Eternity Is Inconceivable - Matthew 3:12 Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Matthew 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint [him] his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Revelation 14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Conclusion: “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men!”

Deliver Us From Evil

Temple Baptist Church - 1-13-2008

Matthew 6:9-13

Introduction:

A. This morning, I want to cover another aspect of the Model Prayer: “Deliver us from evil.”

B. We live in wicked times. You and I do not have to go far to find wickedness in our society. You do not even have to go looking for evil; it comes to where you are.

C. We find in verse 13 an appeal to the Lord to “deliver us from evil.” In salvation, we have been delivered from the power of sin, the penalty of sin, and one day from the presence of sin, but that final day of delivery is not until either death or rapture.

1. That means that evil is always out there.

2. That means that God knows where the evil is.

3. That means that God can deliver us from evil.

4. That means that, sometimes, only God can deliver us from evil.

D. Satan is doing his best to defile, discourage, defame, defeat, and destroy the child of God:
1. Because we are Light – John 3 says that evil hates light.

2. Because we are Few – there are more devils to war against fewer saints.

3. Because we are the Lord’s! Everywhere our Lord went He was attacked.

E. Sometimes, the Lord lets us know where the evil is so that we may avoid it: Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

F. At other times, the Lord does not let us know where the evil is: HE DID NOT TELL ADAM AND EVE WHERE THE DEVIL WAS IN THE GARDEN!

G. There are times when we do not know what lies out there and we must trust the Lord to either deliver from or protect within the realm of that evil.

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD [are] in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

H. We find in the Model Prayer this askance for deliverance from that evil. We need the Lord every hour of every day! I WANT TO EMPHASIS THIS!

1. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Evil Days - Ephesians 5:16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Evil days come and I hate them! They are not days that are relished!)

Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for [that day shall not come], except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

a. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Days Of Sickness - Philippians 2:26-27 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

b. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Days Of Sorrow - Psalms 90:10 The days of our years [are] threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength [they be] fourscore years, yet [is] their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

c. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Days Of Sinfulness

1) Sin Is Rampant - Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

2) Sinners Are Religious - 2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

3) Saints Are Reviled - John 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before [it hated] you.

2. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Evil Men – 2 Thessalonians 3:2-3 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all [men] have not faith. 2 But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep [you] from evil. (There are people who will go out of their way to hurt God’s people. They are wicked and vengeful.)

a. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Their Evil Works – 2 Timothy 4:14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works:

Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when [men] shall revile you, and persecute [you], and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

b. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Their Evil Tongues – 3 John 1:10a Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words. (There are people here in Laurens that do not know me. They have never met me. Our people have met them on visitation and they have remarked that they would never come to Temple Baptist Church because of the pastor. Some disgruntled church member that left the church has put their mouth on the man of God and there is not telling how many others have been affected by their tongue.)

James 3:6 And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Critical, malicious, tale bearing, backbiting, lying, and slandering tongues! This is one of the hardest things to defend against because you do not know who has been affected by them. They never come “face to face” with you but remain hidden in secret places.)

3. Dear Lord, Please Deliver Us From Our Own Evil Flesh – Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,)dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not.

Romans 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Conclusion: Deliver us from evil! “Dear Lord, give me the wisdom to avoid known evil while delivering me from unknown evil!”

The Person of the Church

Temple Baptist Church - 4-4-2000

Matthew 16:13-23

Intro: Exactly what is the Church?

A. What the Church Is - Church - means an assembly of called out ones.

CHURCH, n.
1. The Local Church - A house consecrated to the worship of God, among Christians; the Lords house. To call out or call together, denotes an assembly or collection. A particular number of Christians, united under one form of ecclesiastical government, in one creed, and using the same ritual and ceremonies;

2. The Body of Christ (synonymous words) The collective body of Christians, or of those who profess to believe in Christ.

B. What the Church is not. (Local Church)

1. The Church is not man-made but is a divinely given.

2. The Church is not a Bible study, but is a body properly organized according to the N.T. pattern.

3. The Church is not Christendom. Christendom is more properly identified as the Harlot of Re. 17, and her daughters.

4. The Church is not a denomination.

5. The Church is not a building. - Acts 17:24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

1.The Church is built upon Christ. “Upon this rock”.

a. 1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

b. Ephesians 2:19-22 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

c. 1 Peter 2:6-8 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

2.The Church is built by Christ ("I will build"). Ephesians 2:8-22

a. It Is Christ That Saves Us Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

b. 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

c. Acts 2:46-7 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

d. Psalms 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:

3. The Church belongs to Christ ("I will build my church").

a. Mark 12:10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:

b. Ephesians 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

c. Ephesians 4:14-16 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

d. Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the
church: and he is the saviour of the body.

e. Colossians 1:17-18 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the
head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things
he might have the preeminence.

4. The Church is loved by Christ (“my church”).

a. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

b. 1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

c. Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

5. The Church will be preserved by Christ ("the gates of hell shall not prevail against it").

a. Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

b. Jude 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

6. The Church is the used by Christ ("And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven...").

a. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

2. The Silent Lamb - Mark 15:3-5 And the chief priests accused him of
many things: but he answered nothing. And Pilate asked him again, saying,
Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against
thee. But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other
sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they
shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might
take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have
power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This
commandment have I received of my Father.

Romans 8:1-3 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in
Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the
Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For
what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his
own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

A. The Beloved Son - Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Mark 9:7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice
came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the
Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.

1 John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that
God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through
him.

3. The King Of The Jews - Matthew 27:37

terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

B. He Is The King Of All Glory - Psalms 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O ye
gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in

the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory. Selah.

written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

E. He Is The King Of All Saints - Revelation 15:3 And they sing the song of
Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous
are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

4. The Lord Of Salvation - Luke 23:39-43

A. Believe Upon The Lord - “said unto Jesus, Lord”
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the
power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first,
and also to the Greek.

Romans 3:21-26 But now the righteousness of God without the law is
manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the
righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come
short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the
remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To
declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the
justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

B. Call Upon The Lord - “said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me”

Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name
of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall
be saved.

1 Corinthians 1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them
that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every
place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
