The Local Church and Prayer

 Temple Baptist Church - 3-26-2023

2 Chronicles 6:12-13

Introduction:

A.  In our text, we find King Solomon dedicating the great Temple that he had built by through prayer.  I want to use this example, as I continue to preach on the local church, to show the importance of prayer within these walls.

B.  Everyone should have a prayer life individually.

1. Pray in Circumstances - Romans 12:12  Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

2.  Pray in Confidence - Philippians 4:6  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

3.  Pray in Constance - 1 Thessalonians 5:17  Pray without ceasing.

C.  When we come to God’s house and prayer should be a vital part of our worship of God.  When Jesus came into the Temple in Mark, chapter 11, He taught them saying, “Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer?”

This comes from Isaiah 56:7, which reads, “Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.”

D.  God’s house is Not a house of prayer, but the Lord said that it was THE HOUSE OF PRAYER!  They even had special times just to go to the Temple and pray.

Acts 3:1  Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.  This was one of the three times that it was customary with the Jews to pray.  At 9:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, and 3:00 PM.

Daniel 6:10  Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Psalms 55:17  Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

E.  In 2 Chronicles 6:12-42, we find the Dedicatory Prayer that Solomon made upon completion of the Temple.  In 2 Chronicles 7:1, we find the acceptance of Solomon’s prayer and the consuming presence of God.

F.  The presence and power of God should be our ultimate desire when we meet at the church house.

1.  It Was A Prayer Of Humility – vs. 12-13

a.  Humbled In The Sight Of Man – vs. 12 – “in the presence of all the congregation and spread forth his hands”  (Not caring what man thinks.)

b.  Humbled In The Presence Of God – vs. 13 – “kneeled down on his knees…spread for th his hands toward heaven”  (Caring what God thinks!)

b.  Remembrance Of God’s Presence – vs. 14 – “nor in the earth”

c.  Remembrance Of God’s Power – vs. 15 – “fulfilled it with thine hand”

a.  For Forgiveness – vs. 21 – “when thou hearest, forgive”

b.  For Restoration – vs. 27 – “send rain upon thy land”

Departing Without Being Desired

Temple Baptist Church - 2-5-2017
2 Chronicles 21:1-20

Introduction:

A.  I was reading in the Old Testament (2 Chronicles) Tuesday morning and a phrase that I had read many times “stuck out” to me.  I have always known exactly what that phrase meant but, this time—as I am getting older—it became more personal to me.

B.  Though Jehoshaphat was not a perfect king, he was one of the better ones.  The Lord gave 4 chapters in 2 Chronicles that showed the life of this man.  He began well but did not end as well as he should have and his latter days “set the table” for failure in his son, Jehoram, who became king when Jehoshaphat died.

1.  Jehoshaphat’s beginning.

2 Chronicles 17:3-4  And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;  (4)  But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.

2.  Jehoshaphat’s ending.

2 Chronicles 20:35  And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly:

C.  Jehoshaphat left his children great riches monetarily but destitute spiritually.

2 Chronicles 21:3  And their father gave them great gifts of silver, and of gold, and of precious things, with fenced cities in Judah: but the kingdom gave he to Jehoram; because he was the firstborn.

D.  Jehoshaphat gave the kingdom to his firstborn, Jehoram.

1.  Jehoram slew his brothers.

2 Chronicles 21:4  Now when Jehoram was risen up to the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself, and slew all his brethren with the sword, and divers also of the princes of Israel.

2.  Jehoram married the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, followed Ahab, with whom Jehoshaphat had affinity.

2 Chronicles 21:6  And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which wasevil in the eyes of the LORD.

E.  At age 40, Jehoram died.  The Bible says that he departed without being desired.”

1.  No one missed him when he was gone!  It does not mean that no one loved him for I am sure that some people did but no one missed his wisdom, the path that he left, or the legacy of his life.

2.  A wasted life that his son followed!  Be careful, moms and dads, where you lead your children!!!  Will your life lead your family to godliness and heaven, ungodliness and hell, or simply LEAD THEM NOWHERE!

2 Chronicles 22:1-4  And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the Arabians to the camp had slain all the eldest. So Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.  (2)  Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Athaliah the daughter of Omri.  (3)  He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab: for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly.  (4)  Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.

F.  Will our lives be “desired” by those who follow us.

1.  I have often thought about my life and wondered how my life will end.  My desire is to leave a legacy of godliness and faithfulness for my family to see and follow.  This is not a thing of pride but one of desire.

2.  I started right when the Lord saved me and I want to finish right.  I do not want to die “without being desired.”  I do not want to die in failure or with a life that brings reproach to the Lord and my family.

G.  How do we depart “being desired” instead of “without being desired?”

1.  By having a visible conversion to Christ.  I want my wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends to know that what I have is real!  God wrought a wonderful change in my life when I came to Christ and I want the world to know it.

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Acts 4:12-13  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  (13)  Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.

2.  By having an unshakable allegiance to Christ.  I want the Lord to be first!  Not what I want but what He wants in my life.

Matthew 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;  (18)  While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

3.  By living a consistent life for Christ.  People may not agree with who and what I am but I want them to see consistency in my life.  It they see me, then I have failed, but, if the see Christ in me, I have succeeded!

Colossians 3:3-4  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.  (4)  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

2 Timothy 4:7  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

4.  By having a blessed assurance of being with Christ.  As most of you know, my favorite song is “Blessed Assurance.”  I certainly know what I believe but I am so glad that I know Who I have believed and that He knows me.

Song of Solomon 6:3  I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.

2 Timothy 1:12  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Acts 7:56, 59  And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God ... Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Conclusion:  I want to depart with others having a desire to follow me as I have followed Christ.  I do not want to die “without being desired.”

Is There Hope For America?

Temple Baptist Church - 7-3-2016

2 Chronicles 7:14

Introduction:

A.  Tomorrow, we will celebrate America’s 240th Anniversary.

1.  It seems like only yesterday that we celebrated our Bi-Centennial Birthday.  That was the year that I was saved.  Forty years, over half of my lifetime, has now gone “under the bridge.”  I never get over the greatness of this country!

2.  There is no place like home and no place on earth like America.   I still say, “Love it or leave it!”

3.  I am a red-blooded American!  I love our nation; I love our flag; I love our prosperity; I love our freedom; I love our possibilities (you can be anything that you want to be); I love the topography and beauty of America; I love the diversity of America’s people; I love the variety found in our climate; I love our form of government and hate to see the progressive, liberal left change it from capitalism to socialism.

B.  The two biggest problems in America are ignorance and apathy.  A roving reporter came up to a man on the street and asked, ''Do you know what the two biggest problems in America are?'' The pedestrian said, ''I don't know and I don't care.'' The reporter said, ''You have them both.”  People don't know and they don't care.

1.  People are ignorant of the principles upon which our nation as founded.  President Obama said that America was not a Christian nation.  Though America is quickly leaving its moorings found in the King James Bible, it was founded on the Bible and Biblical principles.  God has truly blessed America.  History is being changed and history books rewritten to remove God from our nation’s foundation.

a)  We are the only nation on earth built upon the Christian faith!

b)  President George Washington said, ''It would be impossible to govern rightly without God and the Bible.''

c)  Present John Adams said, ''It would be impossible to govern without God and the Ten Commandments.''

d)  The Pilgrim Charter of 1620 states that its purpose was ''to advance the enlargement of the Christian religion to the glory of God Almighty.''

e)  Before the Pilgrims arrived on our shores they gathered below the deck of the Mayflower and signed the Mayflower Compact which revealed their intent: ''for the glory of God.''

f)  In 1632 .... when Maryland was chartered as a colony, they wrote, ''We are motivated with the pious zeal for extending the Christian religion.''

g)  Andrew Jackson ..the 7th President said, ''The Bible is the rock upon which our Republic rest.''

h)  The last sentence of the Declaration of Independence signed 228 years ago today says, ''For the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance upon the protection of the Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.''

i)  Eight days after signing the Declaration of Independence ... printed on the side of the Liberty Bell was a quote from Leviticus 25.10, ''Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.''

j)  The fourth verse of the ''Star Spangled Banner'' ... our National anthem that Congress adopted in 1931, reads, ''Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation, then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto, in God is our trust.''

k)  It is a prayer of praise to almighty God! If you're going to take prayer out of school, you have to remove our national anthem because it is a prayer to God!

l)  God has blessed America because she was founded upon the promises and principles of the Word of God! Don't let some secularist tell you that America did not have a spiritual beginning! America was born out of a revival!

m)  Patrick Henry, that patriot and founding father of our country said, ''It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religions but on the Gospel...”

n)  The list could go on and on as I have many, many such quotes made by the founding fathers.

2.  People do not care about the failing morality and political corruptness that are changing our government and laws.

a)  Our nation’s laws are based upon the Civil Law of the Bible.  Because of changing morals, these laws are now being changed or ignored and not enforced.

b)  Our nation’s morals were once based upon Moral Law of the Bible. In today’s society, Biblical morals are mocked while perversion is on the rise and swiftly becoming the accepted as the norm.

c)  Biblical Christianity is being rejected and the “gods” of other nations accepted.  You cannot speak evil of their “gods” but you can say all manner of evil against ours!

C.  Is there hope for America?  We need to understand that our hope is not in the political realm or either presidential candidate no more than our hope was in the outgoing president.  Our hope is not in Republican held house or senate as they have been totally dysfunctional.  Our hope for America is in the God that helped to establish America.  I believe that there is always hope but, in order to have the blessings of God, our nation MUST change her direction by repenting and turning back to God!

Psalms 33:12  Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

Psalms 144:15  Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Psalms 146:5  Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:

D.  I fear that the problem with Christians today is very similar to those of the world that I mentioned above.

1.  Many Christians do not know because of generations of secular education and the encroaching liberal leftist teachings of socialism and atheism.

2.  Many Christians have adopted the thinking of Laodicea and the practice of Calvinism.  We may not agree with the doctrine of Calvinism but we often practice it in many ways.  The world is lost but I am comfortable!  If the world is to be saved, let someone else win them!  If missionaries get to the foreign fields, let someone else support and send them!

E.  What can we do to help America?

1.  Stay awake or WAKE UP!  Romans 13:11  And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.  (Prosperity causes lukewarmness!  Mankind is still dying, souls are still crying, and hell continues to open her mouth without measure.)

Isaiah 5:13-14  Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.  (14)  Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

2.  Stand Fast in the Faith!  Ephesians 6:13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  (The “evil day” is here!  It takes strength and integrity to stand in the midst of ridicule and attack by the world.)

3.  Stand Strong in the Old Paths!  Jeremiah 6:16  Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.  (The “falling away” or apostasy as we call it has been in full swing for several generations and a general forsaking of the old ways has come to pass.  Now the enemy is within the local churches instead of without.)

4.  Supplication!  Continue to make supplications and intercessions for those in authority over us.  1 Timothy 2:1-3  I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;  (2)  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.  (3)  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;  (If you have ever prayed for America, now is the time.  This next presidential election will settle the Supreme Court one way or the other as the next president will probably appoint at least 2 new judges which will swing the balance of power one way or the other.)

5.  Share the Gospel!  Romans 1:14-17  I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.  (15)  So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.  (16)  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  (17)  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  (The lost walk all around us and their eternity is at stake.  If we do not tell them the gospel story, then who will?)

6.  Show the world a Difference!  Titus 2:13-14  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;  (14)  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.  (As we see the day approaching, there seems to be more conforming than transforming!  We are the salt that adds the savor!)

Manasseh

Temple Baptist Church - 11-2-2014
2 Chronicles 32:32-33:25

Introduction:

A.  This morning, I want to look at the life of Manasseh for a few minutes.  His life reflects a right upbringing, rejection of that way of life, the depths of depravity, the amazing Grace of God, and the dangers of procrastination!  Grace is something Manasseh knew a lot about and so do I.  It is only by the grace of God that I stand in this pulpit saved and serving.  My only regrets are that I did not get saved sooner and serve the Lord longer.

1.  Grace Is Certainly Amazing - Romans 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

2.  Grace Is Certainly Adequate - Romans 5:20  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

3.  Grace Is Certainly Available – Lot and Manasseh! - 2 Peter 2:7-8  And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:   (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)  (These two men exemplified the amazing grace of God in the Old Testament. With Lot, we find God’s grace revealed in the New Testament and, with Manasseh, God’s amazing grace was revealed in the Old Testament.)

a)  The last mention of Lot found him drunk, living in a cave, and have incestuous relationships with his daughters.  In the New Testament, we find that God called him just, righteous, and godly.  That is Positional Sanctification.  A good lesson to learn from Lot is to never judge the salvation of another person.

b)  In out text, we find that Manasseh ultimately turned to God in repentance and was gloriously saved.  A good lesson to be learned with Manasseh is to never give up one a lost soul.

Let Us Now Look At Manasseh’s Life:

1.  Manasseh Was Raised In A Godly Home.  In our words, we would say that he had a father who was saved.  Young person, what a privilege it is to have saved parents who raise you in a godly home!

a.  Hezekiah Was A Man of Conversion2 Chronicles 29:1-2  Hezekiah began to reign when he was five and twenty years old, and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Abijah, the daughter of Zechariah.  (2)  And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father had done.  (Hezekiah knew the Lord his God)

**Interesting note:  Hezekiah did right in spite of his father’s (Ahaz) wickedness.  Manasseh did evil in spite of his father’s godliness. (2 Chronicles 28:1; 29:1-2)

b.  Hezekiah Was A Man of Conviction – 2 Chronicles 29:3-19 (Hezekiah cleansed the Temple of God)

c.  Hezekiah Was A Man of Character – 2 Chronicles 31:1 (Hezekiah stood for what was right and holy – tore down the idols)

e.  Hezekiah Was A Man of Confidence – 2 Chronicles 32:24 (Hezekiah prayed to God in sickness and was granted 15 more years – Manasseh saw this)
