Be Careful For Nothing

 Temple Baptist Church - 4-26-2026

Philippians 4:6-7

Introduction:  This morning, I want to look at verses that we are so familiar with.  Every Wednesday, we quote verse 6 before we read our prayer list and take requests.  Then, why preach on the verse?  Because we quote it concerning prayer and supplication without giving thought to the first part of the verse.

A.  Our verse for this morning deals with worry.  Someone once said, “Worry is like paying interest on a load that you may never have to take out.”  Here is a cute little poem concerning worry.

Worry never climbed a hill,
Worry never paid a bill.
Worry never dried a tear,
Worry never calmed a fear.
Worry never fixed a heel,
Worry never cooked a meal.
Worry never composed a song to sing,
Actually, worry never did a worthwhile thing.

B.  “Be” means to make something happen that probably would not happen naturally. “Careful” comes from two words, “care” and “full,” which mean full of care.  Something that occupies our hearts and minds in a negative way.  “Nothing” covers every aspect of our past, present, and future.  “Nothing” means nothing!

Luke 10:41-42  And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:  (42)  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

C.  When we worry, we allow our future fears of either something known or not yet known to overcome our faith in our ever-present, all-knowing, and all-powerful Lord.

D.  The opposite of “careful” is confidence or trust.

1.  The Lord cares about what we care about.  1 Peter 5:7  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

2.  The Lord  is affected by what affects us.  Hebrews 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

3.  The Lord  has promised to be there with us and there for us.  If God be for us, who can be against us?  1 John 4:4  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

4.  The Lord  has guaranteed perfect peace to those who trust Him. (verse 7)  Isaiah 26:3-4  Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.  (4)  Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

E.  Worry causes stress, and stress is possibly the greatest killer in America.  People today are stressed out by the economy and rising prices, the wickedness that has permeated our Land, the uncertainty about the future of our children and grandchildren, and the list could go on and on.

1.  Worry will damage both your physical and mental health.  Look at the people on medication for mental health.  The Mayo Clinic states that statistically, 80-85 % of their case load of ill people was either directly or indirectly related to stress.  “Seventy percent of all patients who come to physicians could cure themselves if they only got rid of their fears, worries, and bad eating habits.”

2.  Worry will cause the object of your worry to consume your thoughts.  The Bible says that we are to think upon good things.  (Philippians 4:8)  Most social, family, and church problems are stress-related.

3.  Worry will disrupt your productivity and purposes.  You cannot give yourself over to worry and do what needs to be done diligently.  Job performance across our land is caused by apathy and stress.  People who do not care or are consumed by their problems.

4.  Worry will negatively affect the way you treat and interact with others.  You will be self-centered because of the load of your cares.  You will seek your own good instead of the good of others.

5.  Worry will adversely affect your emotions.  Your “fuse will be short,” and your outward demeanor will not glorify the Lord.

6.  Worry will cause you to say things that you would not ordinarily say.

a)  Out of the heart are the issues of life.

b)  As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

c)  Out of the abundance of the heart, a man speaketh.

7.  Worry will reduce your faith and trust in the Lord.  You cannot trust and worry at the same time.  These two are like oil and water, they cannot mix!

8.  Worry is more harmful than helpful!  It is a total waste of time and effort.  Some confuse worry and concern. Here is the difference between worry and genuine concern: Worry immobilizes, but concern moves you to action. We should be concerned and not neglect matters of importance. We shouldn't worry about them and do nothing about it.

F.  Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, told the country during the Great Depression that the greatest fear was fear itself.  Here are some good quotes concerning worry.

“A day of worry is more exhausting than a day of work.”

“Work won't kill, but worry will.”

“Don't tell me that worry doesn't do any good. I know better. The things I worry about don't happen.”

“Tain't worthwhile to wear a day all out before it comes.”

“It ain't no use putting up your umbrella till it rains.”

“Happy is the man who is too busy to worry by day, and too sleepy to worry at night.”

G.  George McDonald wrote the following about worry. "No man ever sank under the burden of the day. It is when tomorrow’s burden is added to the burden of today that the weight is more than a man can bear. Never load yourselves so. If you find yourselves so loaded, at least remember this: It is your doing, not God’s. He begs you to leave the future to Him and mind the present."

Psalms 56:3  What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

John 14:1  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

1.  Christians Are Not Immune To Worry!

a.  Though We Know That God Is In Control – He is in control of all that exists and that includes our circumstances!

b.  Though We Know That All Will End Well – Our life story has already been recorded in Heaven.  The final chapter of our life has been written, and it is alright!

c.  Though We Know That Worry Is Sin And Distrust – It is one thing to have concerns and another to worry.  We are concerned because we do not know the end of a thing, but worry is a “horse of another color!”  Worry is our failure to trust our lives, families, finances, protection, and provision to the One who holds it all in His hand.

d.  And Yet, We Still Have A Tendency To Worry

1)  We worry because we are affected by the world.

2)  We worry because we are robed in frail flesh.

3)  We worry because we are still imperfect in our faith.

2. And, Most Of The Time:

a.  We worry about things that either never occur or do not meet our expectations.

b.  We worry about things that we cannot change.

c.  We worry often times about things that really do not matter.

3.  How To Handle Worry:

a.  We Should Not Worry Because We Are Children Of God - Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Romans 8:17  And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

b.  We Should not worry because, as Christians, we are people of faith - Romans 8:28  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

c.  We should not worry because our focus is to be on the kingdom of God, on the spiritual, not the material - Matthew 6:33  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Philippians 1:21  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

d.  We Need To Realize That God Cares - 1 Peter 5:7  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Said the Robin to the Sparrow,

"I should really like to know

Why these anxious human beings

Rush about and hurry so."

Said the Sparrow to the Robin,

"Friend, I think that it must be

That they have no Heavenly Father

Such as cares for you and me."

5.  God’s Prescription For Peace – You do your job, verse 6, and God will do His, verse 7!

a.  The Requirement of Prayer.  Prayer is our worship.  Too often, when we get into a crisis or valley, we rely upon worldly means for the solution to our problems.

1)  The Bible says not to put our confidence in either man or things.  Our confidence is to be the Lord: maker of heaven and earth: He who is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent.

2)  We belong to Him and He belongs to us.  His love, compassion, and pity belong to us and His thoughts toward us are more than can be numbered.  He truly “thinketh” upon us.  He loves us enough that He gave His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, for our sins.

3)  He holds our future just as He held our past and present.  God can handle all of our problems, take down all of our enemies, and supply all of our needs.

b.  The Requirement of Supplication.

1)  We are to pray for God’s will in our lives.  1 John 5:14-15  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:  (15)  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

2)  We are to pray in specifics.  Luke 11:9-13  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  (10)  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  (11)  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?  (12)  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  (13)  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

3)  We are to pray in faith.  James 1:5-8  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  (6)  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  (7)  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.  (8)  A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

c.  The Requirement of Thanksgiving.

1)  Thankful to God for who He is.  Job 1:20-22  Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,  (21)  And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.  (22)  In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

2)  Thankful to God for what He has done.  1 Thessalonians 5:18  In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

3)  Thankful to God for what He will do.  Genesis 18:14  Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Conclusion:  Here is the outcome of verse 6:  The Requirement of Trust. Philippians 4:7  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Be Careful For Nothing

Temple Baptist Church - 10-3-2012
Philippians 4:6-7

Introduction:

A. “Be careful for nothing” means that we are not to allow our fears of the unknown overcome our faith in our ever present Lord.

1. The Lord cares about what we care about. 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Worry, Worry, Worry!

Temple Baptist Church - 4-11-2010

Matthew 6:19-34

Introduction:

A. “The Sermon on the Mount!” The greatest sermon ever preached by the greatest Preacher who ever lived! In the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord dealt with a myriad of problems that face God’s people.

1. The greatest Preacher to ever live cared about what we care about.

2. He is affected by what affects us. He is touched with the feeling of our infirmity. He was tempted in all points as we are tempted.

3. He has promised to be there with us and there for us. If God be for us, who can be against us?

B. In the passage that I just read, we find that the Lord knows and will supply our every need: both physical and spiritual.

1. His power is able!

2. His promises are trustworthy!

3. His admonition is “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness!” You take care of your spiritual things first and let God take care of your physical things.

C. His promise is “and all these things shall be added unto you.” Food, shelter, clothing, and protection! He cares for and takes care of His own.

D. In verse 34, He then says, “Take therefore no thought for the tomorrow!” This statement does not mean that we are not to plan for tomorrow. A man once said, “A right perspective of life is to live as if our Lord would come today and plan as if He would never come.” What the Lord is saying in these verses is this: When you cannot prepare for the morrow, do not worry about it! Do the best you can and leave the rest to Him.

E. Planning for the future is not contrary to verse 34. Verse 34 speaks of the “evil thereof.” These are the things that cause the child of God to fear. The fear of the unknown or the fear of what we suspect may happen. There are many verses of Scripture that deal with the subject of “Worry.” Here are a few of the better known ones.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Psalms 56:3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

2 Corinthians 7:5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.

John 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

F. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, told the country during the Great Depression that the greatest fear was fear itself.

He begs you to leave the future to Him, and mind the present."

H. Worry causes stress and stress is possibly the greatest killer in America. People today are stressed out because of the economy, the wickedness in our Land, the uncertainty of the future of our children and grandchildren, and the list could go on and on.

3. Worry will disrupt your productivity and purposes. You cannot give yourself over to worry and do what needs to be done diligently. Job performance across our land is caused by apathy and stress. People who do not care or people who are consumed with their problems.

4. Worry will negatively affect the way you treat and interact with others. You will be self-centered because of the load of your cares. You will seek your own good instead of the good of others.

5. Worry will adversely affect your emotions. Your “fuse will be short” and your outward demeanor will not glorify the Lord.

These two are like oil and water, they cannot mix!

b. We worry about things that we cannot change.

c. We worry often times about things that really do not matter.

3. Two Kinds Of Worry Found In These Verses:

a. Financial – When The Heart Is In The Wrong Place– vs 19-24

(Temporal Treasures Instead of Heavenly Treasures) “But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”

b. Physical - When The Trust Is In The Wrong Place– vs 25-32

(Depending Upon Self For Supply Instead Of God To Supply)

4. How To Handle Worry:

a. We Should Not Worry Because We Are Children Of God -
Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

I Shall Now Perish One Day By The Hand Of Saul

Temple Baptist Church - 1-11-2008

1 Samuel 26:6-27:1

Introduction:

A. Saul has and would continue to attempt to take David’s life though David has been good to Saul.

1. David was true to Saul.
2. David never laid his hand or his mouth on Saul.
3. Here, David has spared the life of Saul once more but Saul will not give up.
4. In verse 1 of chapter 27, we find David’s despair over the situation.

B. David was chosen by God in 1 Samuel 16 as successor of Saul to the throne of Israel. Samuel anointed David king in the place of Saul. God destined David to rule and David was aware of it. It was God’s promise to David and, yet, we find in 1 Samuel 27:1 that David felt that Saul would kill him and he would never reign!

C. David was “worried” over a future that God had already promised him! How often do we have the same feelings of worry when there is so much in the Bible telling us not to do so?

1. I find this very interesting in light of David’s Promise. (God said that He would preserve David.)

2. I find this very human in light of David’s Predicament. (He was hunted and tired. This pursuit by King Saul was tenacious and unending.

D. I want to look at that little word “worry” for a few minutes this morning and try to give all of us a little help. You might ask, “Preacher, do you ever worry?” My answer would probably be this spiritual one, “I never worry. I only get ‘greatly concerned.’”

E. I believe that we all get “antsy” over the uncertainty of the future as we see the instability of our times. What will 2009 hold for me and my family? I do not know. What will 2009 hold for my church? I do not know. What will 2009 hold for my country? I do not know.

F. Worry defined:

1. To feel uneasy or concerned about something; be troubled. See Synonyms at
brood.
2. To pull or tear at something with or as if with the teeth.
3. To proceed doggedly in the face of difficulty or hardship; struggle: worried along at the problem.

v.tr. 1. To cause to feel anxious, distressed, or troubled. See Synonyms at trouble.
2. To bother or annoy, as with petty complaints.

G. A lot has been said about worry:

Blessed is the man who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy …at night

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday

The only place perpetual worry will get you ahead of time is the cemetery.

Worry brings tomorrow’s supposed difficulties into today.

When you reach into tomorrow’s troubles, you overload today’s circuit.

Worry does not take the sorrow out of tomorrow; it only takes the strength out of today.

When you meet tomorrow, you are out of breath because you are already overloaded from today.

Worry does not make you ready for the future; it makes you unready.

Yesterday is a canceled check; today has all the cash you can handle. Spend it wisely!

1. Worry Is Sin - Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because [he eateth] not of faith: for whatsoever [is] not of faith is sin. (I will not be too hard on any of us at this point but we do need to realize that God still controls both our lives and our circumstances. We learn to trust Him!)

Matthew 14:29-33 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. 31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? 32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. 33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

a. Peter’s Fear – “when he saw”

b. Christ’s Gentle Rebuke – “O thou”

c. Disciple’s Worship – “came and worshipped him”

2. Worry Controls Our Thinking And Therefore Our Lives - Matthew 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day [is] the evil thereof. (We become ineffective for Christ because our minds are fearful because of our circumstances. Fear is a fearful thing as it possesses our souls!)

Isaiah 26:3-4 Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee. 4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH [is] everlasting strength:

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report; if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

3. Worry Dishonors God - Hebrews 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.

Luke 12:7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

4. Worry Doubts Both God’s Love And Care For His Own - 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (I do not believe that we will ever know just how much God loves and cares for us! We spend our days “doing our thing” while giving little thought to our wonderful Lord while He spends our day constantly thinking about and caring for us.)

Psalms 40:5 Many, O LORD my God, [are] thy wonderful works [which] thou hast done, and thy thoughts [which are] to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: [if] I would declare and speak [of them], they are more than can be numbered.

Psalms 40:17 But I [am] poor and needy; [yet] the Lord thinketh upon me: thou [art] my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

5. Worry Affects The Faith Of Others - Psalms 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, [even] praise unto our God: many shall see [it], and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

Psalms 34:2-6 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear [thereof], and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. 5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. 6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

Acts 28:15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. (Imagine, Paul encouraged by the faithfulness of these brethren. You never know who your life will affect through your faithfulness to the Lord.)

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Our prayer should be, “Dear Lord, never let my faithlessness be a discouragement to my brothers and sisters in Christ.”)

Deuteronomy 1:28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people [is] greater and taller than we; the cities [are] great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.

6. Worry Encourages The Devil - 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat:

2 Timothy 2:26 And [that] they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (Satan loves to take down one of God’s children through circumstances. He lies, connives, and constantly works to destroy the faith of God’s children.)

7. Worry Hurts Us Mentally And Physically - Luke 21:26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

Psalms 42:11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and my God. (The greatest killer in America today is stress. Stress is caused by worry and fear. Stress takes a toll on our physical bodies because it never allows us to get the peaceful rest that we require. Our minds cannot rest, therefore, our bodies cannot rest.)

Psalms 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. (Peace is up to us for the Lord has already promised it in John 14:27!)

8. Worry Is Absolute Foolishness For We Gain Nothing By Doing So – (Turn here because no matter how many times we read these verses, we still do not believe them!) Matthew 6:25-34 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? 31 Therefore take no thought, (No means “NO”) saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. (Is this passage of Scripture clear or what? What a promise Jesus Christ our Lord gave to His disciples and yet they spent their days in unwarranted fear.)

James 4:13-17 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. 17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

e. Worry Is Foolish Because All Of The Worry In The World Will Not Change One Thing!

f. Worry Is Foolish Because All Things Are For Our Sakes!

g. Worry Is Foolish Because God’s Promises Never Fail!

h. Worry Is Foolish Because God’s Grace Is Still Sufficient!

i. Worry Is Foolish Because God Will Always Be There For Us! He Loves Us And Will Take Care Of Us!
