Romans 6:1-14

Introduction.

A.  Last week, we saw the baptism of the Holy Ghost that places us into the body of Christ.  Baptized into Jesus.  I am His and He is mine.

B.  Tonight, I want to take a short look at the change of our relationship with sin.  The entire 6th chapter of Romans is about our relationship to sin after we are saved. 

1.  There is a great difference between possession and profession when it comes to salvation.  We need to be very careful at this point because God is the only one who can judge a man’s heart. 

2.  As we look across America, we find that God and Jesus Christ are mentioned but those speaking do not have a testimony of a changed life. 

Acts 8:39  And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  (10)  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  (11)  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

James 2:17-18  Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.  (18)  Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.  

C.  When we are saved, our relationship with sin is forever changed.  This is an important doctrine.

1.  In Salvation, we have been saved from the Penalty of Sin.  Verse 2 – “dead to sin.”  1 John 3:9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

2.  In Salvation, we have been saved from the Practice of Sin.  Verse 4 – “newness of life.”  Ephesians 2:2-3  Whereinin time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  (3)  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

3.  In Salvation, we have been saved from the Power of Sin.  Verse 9 – “no more dominion.”  Romans 6:14  For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

4.  In Salvation, we will one day be removed from the Presence of Sin.  Verse 6 – “that the body of sin might be destroyed.”  Revelation 21:27  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

D.  The “New Life” in Christ.

1.  It should be a life that is different.  2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2.  It should be a life that glorifies God and not self.  1 Corinthians 1:31  That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

3.  It should be a life that is both vibrant and godly.  2 Peter 3:11  Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

4.  It should be a life that portrays an inward fullness of Joy.  Philippians 4:4  Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

5.  It should be a life that is victorious life of temperance.  Philippians 4:5  Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

6.  It should be a life that is faithful to the things of God.  Acts 2:41-42, 46-47  Then they that gladly received his wordwere baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  (42)  And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers  ...  (46)  And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,  (47)  Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Let Us Not Be Weary In Well Doing - Part 1

Galatians 6:1-10

Introduction:

A.  I want to get our text from verse 9 but, as the first word of the verse is “and,” we will interpret our text within its context.

1.  Verse 1 shows the possibility of a child of God being “overtaken” in a fault.  When we see the word “fault,” we naturally thing of something going wrong that is our fault.  Something that we knew better than to do but, thinking that we would not have to pay a price, that we intentionally did. 

2.  The admonition is that a)  it could be one of us that is overtaken   b)  we have a responsibility to restore the fallen.

B.  We live in the days of departing.  The laborers get fewer and the harvest greater.  Not all that depart are unsaved so I want to look at some of the reasons for this falling into sin and out of church.

C.  Preceding the phrase “let us not be weary in well doing,” we find the principle of sowing and reaping.  Either sowing to the flesh and reaping corruption or sowing to the Spirit and reaping everlasting life.

1.  The text portrays three types of believers:  carnal, spiritual and weary in well doing.

2.  The sinful, the spiritual, and the middle of the road or neutrality which is sinful.  There is no benign state of neutrality with God!  You are for Him or you are against Him.

D.  Sowing right is imperative to living right!

E.  First, sowing to the flesh.

1.  The Deception of Sin

a.  Deceived By Satan

2 Corinthians 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

1 Chronicles 21:1 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

b.  Deceived By Sin

Job 4:8  Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

c.  Deceived By Self (the worst of all deceptions)

1 Corinthians 6:9-10  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

2 Timothy 3:13  But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

2.  The Workings of Sin

James 1:14-16  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.  Do not err, my beloved brethren.

a.  Sin’s Character – “own lust”

b.  Sin’s Conception – “lust hath conceived”

c.  Sin’s Culmination – “death”

3.  The Reaping of Sin – Galatians 6:7-8  “Be Not Deceived; God Is Not Mocked”

5 Laws of Sowing and Reaping or “Laws Of The Harvest”

a.  The Principle of Sowing - “lust hath conceived” - You always sow before you reap.

b.  The Product of Sowing - “bringeth forth sin” - You always reap what you sow.

c.  The Payoff of Sowing  - “tempted - lust - sin - death” - You always reap more than you sow.

d.  The Period of Sowing - “when it is finished” - You always reap later than you sow.

e.  The Perplexity of Sowing - “Do not err” - You are always shocked at the harvest

Galatians 6:7-10

A.  The Sorrow Of Sowing - 7-8

1.  The Deception Of Sowing To Corruption – 7  “Be not deceived”

Romans 7:11  For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.

James 1:22  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 

1 John 3:7  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. 

2.  The Discovery Of Sowing To Corruption – 7  “God is not mocked”

Romans 2:6-10  Who will render to every man according to his deeds:  To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:  But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,  Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;  But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

3.  The Deciding Of Sowing To Corruption - 7-8 “Whatsoever a man soweth ... soweth to his flesh” - our decision

Romans 6:13  Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

4.  The Destruction Of Sowing To Corruption – 8  “Shall of his flesh reap corruption”

Job 4:8  Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. 

Proverbs 1:31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 

I Will Not Be Negligent

2 Peter 1:12-15

Introduction: 

A.  One of the best ways to teach is through repetition and re-enforcement. 

1.  If you want to memorize a verse of Scripture, write it 25 times and you will be able to see it in your mind from that point on. 

2.  Teaching is putting forth building blocks but, as we build, we must rehearse the ones that we have already learned.  If you don’t use it you lose it.

B.  One of the great problems of the end-time church is the negligence of the pulpits.  There is certainly a famine of hearing in the land, both of pulpits that will not preach and pews that will not listen.

1.  Lately, many of us have become knowledgeable of the term “gross negligence.”  It is the standard for criminal prosecution in the mis-handling of classified information.

2.  Negligence – impersonal or careless (Cares nothing about the people of the church - could care less)

C.  One of these days, I will be gone.  My earthly ministry will be over.  If I can leave you spiritually grown up, doctrinally sound, and faithful to the work—I will have been a success.

D.  When God places men in the pulpit, there comes a responsibility to that pulpit.

1.  Not to be negligent in setting a proper example before the people.  “not be negligent”

            2.  Not to be negligent in faithfully proclaiming the Word of God. “to put you always”

3.  Not to be negligent in preaching and teaching the whole counsel of God - “in remembrance of these things”  (The wordmeet in verse 13 means to be approved unto God.)

E.  There are many things that could be mentioned that need to be remembered:

1.  You are temporal in this life and will not be here long.

2.  Everything you have on earth will one day burn up.

3.  A life lived for Christ is the greatest life of all.

4.  Only these things done for the Lord are of lasting value.

5.  Without Christ you can do nothing.

6.  With Christ you can do all things.

7.  One day it will be worth it all.

            8.  The listing could be endless, but Paul just mentioned these in the context.

1.  Not be negligent to remind you of the grace and graciousness of God – vs. 1-4

            a.  The Grace Of God In Our Salvation – vs. 1

                        1) Salvation – A Present Possession – “obtained”

                        2) Salvation – A Precious Possession – “precious faith”

3) Salvation – A Perfect Possession – “righteousness of God and our     Saviour Jesus Christ”

4)  Salvation – A Peaceful Possession – “Grace and peace be multiplied”

            b.  The Graciousness Of God In Our Sanctification – vs. 2-4

                        1) Sanctification Is A Willful Gift – vs. 3-4

                                    a) Powerfully Given – “According as his divine power”

                                    b) Purposefully Given – given unto us”

                                    c) Perfectly Given – “all things that pertain”

                        2) Sanctification Is A Wonderful Gift – vs. 3-4

a) Partakers Of The Divine Nature – “that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature”

b.  Escapers Of The Corruption Of The World – “corruption that is in the world through lust”

2.  Not be negligent to remind you of the responsibility and benefits of Spiritual Growth – vs. 5-11

            a.  The Responsibility Of Spiritual Growth – vs. 5-7

                        1) There Is A Determination – “giving all diligence”

                        2) There Is A Direction – “add to your faith virtue . . . charity”

                        3) There Is A Desire – “that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful”

            b.  The Results Of Spiritual Growth – vs. 8-11

                        1) Assurance Of Production – vs. 8 “neither . . . nor”

                        2) Assurance Of Peace – vs. 9-10 “your calling and election sure”

                        3) Assurance Of Payment – vs. 11 “entrance . . . abundantly”

Baptism of the Holy Ghost

Romans 6:1-10

Introduction: 

A.  There is so much in these verses that I will take my time with them.  Tonight, I want to look at the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.

B.  There is a lot of unnecessary confusion on this subject because of lack of study and rightly dividing the Word of Truth, our Bible.  Even among the independent Baptist, there are those who deny this precious doctrine. 

C.  There is the presence of false doctrine on the subject.  Most comes from the Pentecostal Movement.  The modern day Tongues Movement began in 1906 at the Azusa Street Mission in Los Angeles, California.  Born in that “revival” were heresies concerning the baptism of the Holy Ghost and, therefore, spiritual confusion.

a.  The heresy that the baptism of the Holy Ghost is a second working of grace.

b.  The heresy that the baptism of the Holy Ghost is for the “spiritual elite.”

c.   The heresy that the baptism of the Holy Ghost is evidenced by speaking in tongues.

D.  Let us make this simple.  The word “baptize” means to immerse or submerge.  It does not mean to sprinkle of to pour.  Baptism is placing something into something!

1.  At the moment of salvation, the believer is baptized into the body of Christ: also called the “family” and the “church.”  Verse 3.

Romans 6:3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  (Water baptism is a type of what was done at the moment of salvation and does not baptize us “into His death!”)

1 Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.  (Water baptism is done by man.  The baptism of the Holy Ghost is done by the [capital “S”] Holy Spirit.)

Galatians 3:26-28  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.  (27)  For as many of you as have beenbaptized into Christ have put on Christ.  (28)  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.  (This baptism cannot be water baptism because, in the local church, we are Jew and Greek—Gentile—bond and free—male and female.  In the church or body of Christ, all are equal because all are the same.) 

Ephesians 5:28-30  So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.  For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:  For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 

2.  At the moment of salvation, the Holy Ghost indwells the believer.

Romans 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Ephesians 4:4-6  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;  (5)  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,  (6)  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.  (Four things are tied together in these verses: a)  one body  b)  one Spirit  c)  one baptism  d)  in you all.  Again, not water baptism.  These verse speak of salvation, not church membership.  That is the reason that “baptism” is singular, water baptism has nothing to do with salvation, thus, the baptism of the Holy Ghost is referred to here.)

Hebrews 6:1-3  Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,  Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.  And this will we do, if God permit.  (When speaking of doctrine in Hebrews 6, “baptisms” is plural.  This does not mean “washings” as some would interpret it because there were no “washings” in the New Testament church as the Law was fulfilled in Christ.  “baptisms” plural speaks of the baptism of the Holy Ghost and water baptism because both are New Testament doctrines.)

            1.  The Baptism of the Holy Ghost takes place at the moment of Salvation.

            2.  Water Baptism is an act of obedience taken after Salvation.

3.  At the moment of salvation, the believer is sealed by the Holy Ghost: eternal life.

1 Corinthians 12:13  For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Ephesians 4:30  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Colossians 3:3-4  For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.  (4)  When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

How To Have A Faithful Home In 2018

Joshua 24:15

Introduction: 

A.  Every Family Needs Three Homes:

1.  They Need A Christian Home – Not a religious home but a Christian home.  A home that provides a spiritual sanctuary for the protection of the family.

2.  They Need A Church Home – Not just any church but a biblical one.  One that follows the old paths; one that has the right Bible; one that is doctrinally correct; one that has separation from worldliness.

3.  They Need A Heavenly Home - Acts 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

B.  As Joshua was getting ready to die, he left this final admonition of making a right choice for the family. 

1.  Having a good, godly home is a choice that we make.  “Choose you this day whom ye will serve.” 

2.  We cannot serve both God and mammon: a type of the world.  We will hold to one and despise the other; we will love one and hate the other.

C.  I cannot over stress the importance of the biblical home. 

1.  America is failing because the home is failing.  So many children are being born in single parent homes.  So many children are living “pillar to post” because they are being “farmed out” to daycare and baby sitters. 

2.  The affect upon our nation is perilous!  Children are being raised without respect for parents or authority.

D.  What kind of homes do we need?

1.  We Need Homes That Fear God – Ecclesiastes 12:13  Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

a.  Clean Homes - Psalms 19:9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.

b.  Moral Homes - Proverbs 8:13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

c.  Wise Homes - Proverbs 9:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

2.  We Need Homes That Are Faithful To God - Psalms 22:4  Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.

a.  Faithful To Serve The Lord - Psalms 100:2  Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

b.  Faithful To The Church - Hebrews 10:25  Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

(1)  We Need Families who will be faithful To Attend Church.

(2)  We Need Families who will be faithful to follow the Lord.

(3)  We Need Families who will be faithful to tithe their income.

(4)  We Need Families who will be faithful to teach the Word.

(5)  We Need Families who will be faithful to lead right.

(6)  We Need Families who will be faithful to win souls.
