A. Verse 10 is the key to the remainder of chapter three.
1. Chapter one, the heathen is willfully lost and accountable for the light that God gives to every man: the light of conscience and the light of creation. The Bible declares that “when they knew God!”
2. Chapter two, the religious man is willfully lost because he judges the heathen but does the same things.
3. Chapter two and three, the Jew is willfully lost because both the inscribed Word and the incarnate Word were given to the nation of Israel.
B. Chapter three settles the matter of righteousness and salvation. The heathen worships self: they worship the creature, i.e. humanism. The religious worship ritual and self-righteousness. The Jew worships genealogy and Phariseeism.
C. In both the Old and New Testament economies, God’s Word has stressed the perfection of salvation’s righteousness: what God requires for a person to go to heaven. Since man in his natural state is altogether sinful, his righteousness cannot stand the test of God’s righteous judgement.
1. Man Is Indicted By God’s Word – vs. 9-10a
a. God’s Word Establishes The Fact of Man’s Sinfulness - Ecclesiastes 7:20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.
b. It Establishes Our Condition – “not a just man upon earth”
Job 15:14-16 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
Psalms 143:2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
c. It Establishes Our Character – “that doeth good”
Psalms 130:3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
d. It Establishes Our Lack of Capability – “and sinneth not”
Proverbs 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
2. Man Is Indicted By His Own Actions – vs. 10b-18
a. Man Is Mentally Depraved – vs. 10-11 - 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Psalms 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
Proverbs 15:26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.
Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 59:1-7 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
Matthew 15:18-19 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
b. Man Is Morally Depraved – vs. 12-18 - Proverbs 23:7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Psalms 36:1 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
1) Unrestrained Words – vs. 13-14
Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matthew 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.
2) Unrestrained Works – vs. 15
Genesis 11: 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
3) Unrestrained Wills – vs. 16-18
a) Their Destruction – vs. 16 “destruction”
Proverbs 13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
Proverbs 21:7 The robbery of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.
Proverbs 29:1 He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
b) Their Despair – vs. 16 “misery”
Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked. VS
Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
c) Their Dismay – vs. 17 – “way of peace…not known”
d) Their Doom – vs. 18 “no fear of God”
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
