The Unity of God

Temple Baptist Church - 8-9-2023

John 10:30

Introduction:

A.  One of the most effective of Satan’s devices is division and confusion.  Our Lord spoke of the destruction of a house divided against itself and it was recorded in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Matthew 12:25  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

I find it of interest that there was no mention of this device of division in John’s Gospel as that Book of the Bible expresses the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ.  THERE IS NO DIVISION IN GOD!

B.  In our context, Jesus spoke exhaustively about who He was and His relation ship with the believers (sheep) and the Father in verse 30.  In verse 31, they took up stones once again to kill our Lord because of His claim to be the Son of God and oneness with God the Father.  “I and the Father are one!”

John 10:31-33  Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.  (32)  Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?  (33)  The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

C.  As 21st Century believers, we face the same problem of division.  “Divide and Conquer” is a saying that has been used over the years.

1.  There is a movement within the Pentecostal movement that are referred to themselves as “Jesus Only.”  They deny God the Father and disregard the Holy Spirit in both their Theology and baptism.  The are baptized in the name of Jesus while the Bible commands us to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost!

Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

2.  During the Transition Period, as God was moving the Jew from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant, Peter command that these New Testament Jews be baptized in the name of “Jesus” because of their national rejection and their crucifixion of the Messiah.  It was part of their confession of faith.

3.  There are both preachers and people on the pews of Baptist churches who also separate and divide the Trinity.

a)  There are those who ignorantly claim that God either allowed to do something or gave them something that is against the truth found in the Bible.  Jesus is the Word, equated with the Scriptures, and the Scriptures cannot be broken.

b)  God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit will never violate the Word of God!  The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth as only the truth will make us free.

4.  The Bible teaches Monotheism, that there is one God—not many,  and Trinitarianism, that God manifests Himself in three distinct person who are coeternal, coequal, and indivisibly united.

5.  I often use a Theological statement that goes like this.  “God is one God, manifesting Himself in three Persons, God the Father—God the Son—and God the Holy Spirit.  These Three are all co-equal in all power and attributes.”

6.  I will probably spend several services one the subject “The Unity of God.”

D.  In our text for tonight, we find the words “I and the Father are One”.

1.  For this cause, the Jews took up stones once again because Jesus equated Himself with God the Father.

2.  Their rejection of Christ, their spiritual blindness, and their hatred concerning the doctrinal truth of the Trinity, of the Unity and Oneness of God is expressed here in verse 31.

E.  Now, let us see what the Bible says about the Unity of God.

1.  The Unity of God in Creation.

a.  We understand that Jesus Christ, Jehovah God in the Old Testament, was the Creator of all things.

John 1:3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

John 1:10  He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

Ephesians 3:9  And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

Colossians 1:15-17  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:  (16)  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  (17)  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

b.  “In the beginning God” – The name for God is “Elohim,” which is a plural word.  Though Jesus Christ alone was the Creator of all things, we find that the Trinity was together in full agreement.

Genesis 1:2  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

c.  After the Creation was finished, God made Adam of the dust of the earth, so now we find the plural word “us” found.  Not let Us create but lets us make!  Make out of what was already created.

Genesis 1:26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

The word “God” used here is Elohim, the plural name of God with the personal pronouns also being plural: “us” and “our”.

Genesis 3:22  And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Here, we find a compound name of God: LORD (Jehovah) and God (Elohim) used for the first time.  LORD or Jehovah was Jesus Christ and God was the unity of the Godhead together.  “LORD God” is used 545 times in the Bible expressing the complete oneness and unity of the Godhead or Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

A New Life in Christ

 Temple Baptist Church - 8-6-2023

Psalm 16

Introduction:

A.  The beginning of the Psalm says “Michtam of David”.  These words are found in the headings of 6 Psalms: 16, 56. 57. 58. 59, 60.  There is a lot of discussion about the word “Michtam”.  From this name, many refer to Psalm 16 as “The Golden Psalm”.

B.  “Michtam” means to carve or to engrave, thus giving its meaning as a Psalm to be set up as a monument because of its monumental nature.  Thus, making these Psalms of great importance.  Not just write these psalms but engrave them!

C.  Verses 1-4 – David’s Praise of God.

D.  Verses 5-9 – David’s Perception of God.

1.  Verse 5 – The Lord is my Portion.

2.  Verse 7 – The Lord is my Counselor.

3.  Verse 8 – The Lord is my Anchor.

4.  Verse 9 – The Lord is my Gladness, Glory, and Grace.

E.  Verses 10-11 – David’s Pleasing with God.

F.  Psalm 16, as many other Psalms in your Bible, is Messianic: relating or referring to the coming Messiah.  In the last two verses of the Psalm, we find the gospel: the death, burial, and resurrection.

Psalms 16:10-11  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (11)  Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

G.  This is prophetic of the new birth of the believer found in Romans, chapter 6.

Romans 6:1-5  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  (2)  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  (3)  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  (4)  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  (5)  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

H.  The likeness of His resurrection is found in both the physical and spiritual realms.

1.  The physical realm as our bodies will one day be changed when Jesus comes for His church.  “Ain’t no grave gonna keep my body down.”

2.  The spiritual realm as our spiritual resurrection changes the life of the believer and is described here in verse 11.

J.  Tonight, I want to look at three aspects of the new life in Christ Jesus that is available to each of us in this life.

1.  His Path – “Thou wilt show me the path of life.”

a.  An Individual Path - Hebrews 12:1  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

b.  A Biblical Path - Psalms 119:105  NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

c.  A Plain Path - Psalms 27:11  Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies.

d.  A Proven Path - Jeremiah 6:16  Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

e.  A Providential Path - Psalms 77:19  Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.

2.  His Presence.  in thy presence is fulness of joy”

a.  A Place of Great Privilege - Hebrews 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

b.  A Place of Great Protection - Isaiah 43:1-2  But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  (2)  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

c.  A Place of Great Joy - Psalms 28:7  The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

3.  His Pleasure – “at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

a.  A Pleasure In This Life – Isaiah 12:2-3  Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.  (3)  Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

b.  A Pleasure In The Life to Come – Jude 24  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

God’s Preparations

1 Corinthians 2:7-16

Introduction:

A. Verse 9-10 says, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  (10)  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Deuteronomy 29:29  The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Romans 11:33-36  O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!  (34)  For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?  (35)  Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?  (36)  For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Some things we are not meant to know because we are finite, and God is infinite.  As an old preacher once said, “Don’t mess with God’s toys!”

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  (6)  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

B.  Life is hard and even children often suffer.  But this world is not our home, we are just passing through on our way to a place that Paul described as “far better.”  In Hebrews, chapter 11 (The Hall of Faith) we find these words:

Hebrews 11:32-40  And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:  (33)  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,  (34)  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.  (35)  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:  (36)  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:  (37)  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;  (38)  (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.  (39)  And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:  (40)  God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

C.  In our text, in verse 9, we find things that cannot be imagined that God has prepared for those who love Him.  Some verses that we often quote or read tell us the same thing.

Jeremiah 33:3  Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Isaiah 45:3  And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.

Isaiah 48:6  Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.

Matthew 13:34-35  All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:  (35)  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Philippians 1:23  For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

D.  There are things that are beyond our comprehension that we will see and enjoy in eternity.

E.  In verse 10, we find some things that God has prepared can be known.

F.  In verses 9-10, we find that revelation of God’s preparations is found in two ways: “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”

1 Corinthians 2:10  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  (10)  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

1.  Through the holy Scriptures.  “ (9) as it is written … (10) the deep things of God” which refers to the completed canon of Scriptures.

2.  Through the guidance of the indwelling Holy Spirit,  “But God hath revealed the unto us by his Spirit”.  In 1 Corinthians 2:13 says “the Spirit of God … they are spiritually discerned”.

G.  I want to look at the phrase “the things which God hath prepared” for a few minutes.  One of the attributes of God is Omniscience.  God always moves with purpose; therefore, we can understand that with His purpose in mind, His preparations are right, just, and holy and unmovable.

2:13 says “the Spirit of God … they are spiritually discerned”.

H.  Some things that we can know that God prepared:

1.  God prepared a sacrifice for the sinner.  God loves all sinners and desires to save them.  “Oh, how He loves you and me!”

John 14:1-3  Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.  (2)  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  (3)  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Revelation 13:8b  of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

2.  God prepared hearts for the Word of God.  The “good soil” of Matthew , chapter 13.  A prepared soil that receives the seed of God’s Word and brings forth fruit, more fruit, and much fruit (John 15).

Luke 24:30-32  And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.  (31)  And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.  (32)  And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Acts 16:14-15  And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.  (15)  And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

Romans 10:9-10  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  (10)  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

3.  God prepared a whale for a disobedient servant.  Chastisement is a way of life because each believer still has a sin nature that must be either controlled or chastened.  Bow to chastisement and live a great life or buck chastisement and meet your “whale”.

Hebrews 12:6-13  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  (7)  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  (8)  But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  (9)  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?  (10)  For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.  (11)  Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.  (12)  Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;  (13)  And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

Jonah 1:17  Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

God has one for us also when we become callously disobedient!

4.  God prepared a place of fire for the unrepentant sinner.  The Laws of Harvest: reap what you sow, reap more than you sow, reap later than you sow.

Galatians 6:7-8  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.  (8)  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Revelation 20:11-15  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  (12)  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  (13)  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  (14)  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  (15)  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

5.  God prepared a place of abode for the saints.  Heaven is beyond human comprehension but it is a real place called Home!

1 Corinthians 2:9  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Hebrews 11:16  But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Revelation 21:2  And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

6. l God prepared a rest for His people.  Eternal rest.  How often do we get tired in this world and of this world, but there is coming a day!

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Hebrews 4:9-10  There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.  (10)  For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Eternal Life

 Temple Baptist Church - 8-2-2023

John 10:28

Introduction:

A.  Verse 28 begins with the words “And I give unto them.”  Eternal things belong to the Lord as only He lives in the realm of eternity.

1.  The life that God gives to the believer is a wonderful gift.  A gift is something that you neither do some thing to deserve nor ask for.  Eternal life is a gift that God gives to His children out of His loving heart.

2.  The life that gives to the believer is an eternal gift.  I am not sure what it is about eternal that people do not understand but eternal is infinite, on both sides of time.  In math, science, and Theology, the words infinite, infinity, or eternal are often used.

a)  In math, it is a number that never ends such as 10n or a power called infinity.  A number that cannot be calculated.

b)  In Science, it is a distance or power that cannot be measured.

c)  In Theology, because eternity cannot be measured in time, it is an eternal now, a never-ending moment, forever and ever and ever.  Because it has no time, it is timeless.

B.  The word “eternal” is found 47 times on the Bible with 45 of these mentions being found in the New Testament.

1.  The First Mention of “Eternal” is found in the Old Testament and speaks of the eternal life of God.  Deuteronomy 33:27  The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

2.  The Last Mention of “Eternal” is found in the New Testament and speaks if the eternal life of the believer.  Jude 21  Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

C.  The main two things found in the Bible that are eternal are eternal life and eternal damnation.  Both saved and unsaved have an eternal life but the two lives are so vastly different:

1.  The eternal life of the believer is eternal bliss, joy, worship, and praise, etc.

2.  While the eternal life of the unbeliever, eternal death, is that of darkness, mist of blackness, punishment, torment, fire, and separation.

D.  Tonight, I find it important to re-establish the fact that the child of God is forever saved!  I do not want to make this message hard to understand, but it is one that needs to be understood!

E.  The doctrine of eternal life has been attacked by both man and devil about as much as the doctrine of the scriptures!  No man has or ever will be able to merit salvation through personal righteousness nor will man ever be able to maintain his salvation through the same.

1.  Personal Merit goes back to Romans 10:3, which says: “For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.”

2.  What righteousness is essential to salvation?  The absolutely perfect righteousness that can only be found in Jesus Christ.  What righteousness is essential to remaining saved?  The same: the absolutely perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 64:6  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Ecclesiastes 7:20  For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Philippians 3:9  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Romans 3:21-28  But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;  (22)  Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:  (23)  For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;  (24)  Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:  (25)  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;  (26)  To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.  (27)  Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.  (28)  Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

F.  At this point, let me say that if you lived a perfect, sinless life, you would still die and go to hell for all eternity because you did not come to God through Jesus Christ.  (John 14:6)  Salvation is not of works according to Ephesians 2:8-9.

G.  But salvation is a salvation THAT WORKS according to the bible!  I do not work to continue to be saved; I continue to work because I am saved.

H.  God has eternal life, and the breath of God gave to Adam eternal life.  His body died 930 years later but Adam remains to this day and will live forever.  In John, when speaking of the Word, the scripture sets forth this same principle.

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Ecclesiastes 12:7  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

John 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

J.  The phrase “eternal life” is found 26x  and the phrase “life eternal” is found 4x.

1.  First Mention of eternal life is found in the New Testament,  Matthew 19:16  And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?  (Give up the world, come and follow Christ.)

2.  All mankind will remain in one eternal state or the other.  Matthew 25:46  And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.  (Hell and heaven are both eternal.)

3.  Eternal Life is a result of believing, not personal merit.  John 3:15  That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (Believing the record of the gospel of Jesus Christ for salvation brings eternal life.)

1 John 5:11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Titus 3:7  That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

4.  Eternal Life is just that, eternal that can neither be lost or deminished.  John 10:28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. (Shall never perish is an absolute negative!  Never for any reason.  Not possible.)

5.  Eternal Life comes through a personal faith in the record given in the Word of God.  John 5:39  Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

John 6:68  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. (Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God [Romans 10:17]).
