The God of All Comfort

 Temple Baptist Church - 10-14-2026

2 Corinthians 1:3-5

Introduction:

A. Last week, we saw the reality of tribulation in this world. God’s people suffer in this world just like the unsaved suffer. The unsaved do not have something that the saved have: the comfort of God.

B. Paul says that along with our tribulation comes comfort from God.

C. The word “comfort” is found sixty-six times in your Bible. Comfort is availability!

1. Comfort: παράκλησις paraklēsis par-ak'-lay-sis - solace: - comfort, consolation, exhortation, intreaty.to call near.

2. Found forty-two times in the Old Testament and 24 times in the New Testament.

D. The word “comforter or Comforter” is found 8 times in your Bible. Comforter is comfort in Action!

1. Four times in the Old Testament with “comforter” not capitalized. Twice mentioned in Ecclesiastes and twice in Lamentations. I find it of interest that each reference says they had no comforter speaking of human comforting.

Each time used, comforter came from the Hebrew word נָחַם nâcham naw-kham' A primitive root; properly to sigh, that is, breathe strongly; by implication to be sorry, that is, (in a favorable sense) to pity, console or (reflexively) rue. Today, we often say, “I am so sorry,” which, though a great thing to say but, at the end of the day, the sufferer goes home and so do we.

2. Four times in the New Testament with every mention capitalizes, referencing the Holy Ghost of God. The indwelling Comforter is there with us, for us, and when we go home at the end of the day, still actively with us!

Each instance, the word is both divine and personal to the saved. Comforter: παράκλητος paraklētos par-ak'-lay-tos An intercessor, consoler: - advocate, comforter. To come along beside us.

E. Why a little word study? Because our text says: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (4) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

1. What powerful verses! What precious promises! Mercy and Comfort! What wonderful comfort the child of God has in every instance of life!

2. I do not know where you all are in life, what grief and pain that you bear, but I do know that the God of all grace and comfort knows and helps you bear it.

3. Now, let me say that we must allow the God of all grace and comfort to do His marvelous work in our lives that we will be able to bear it!

4. “Does Jesus care, oh yes He cares” we sing but never realize the depth of God’s care, the sufficiency of His grace, and the magnitude of His wonder, overlooking love. How many times do we quote this verse: 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

F. God promises comfort to His children in whatever their circumstances. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy is promised in the morning.

Psalms 30:5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

John 16:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

G. We need comfort: There is not a sickness that God cannot heal nor a situation He cannot overcome.

Psalms 103:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

1. When Sickness Comes - Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Matthew 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

2. When Sin Comes - 2 Corinthians 2:7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

Oh, when I sing this verse: “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it; prone to leave the God I love,” my heart rejoices that in spite of it all, “He loves me, He loves me, He loves me this I know. He gave Himself to die for because He loves me so!”

3. When Sorrow Comes - 1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Hebrews 4:9-10 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

H. Here are seven sources of comfort:

1. WE ARE COMFORTED BY THE FATHER - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (What a comfort! Knowing that we can go to God with any and everything and expect Him to comfort us.)

Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 26:3-4 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength: (Not just peace but PERFECT PEACE!)

2. WE ARE COMFORTED BY THE SON - Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

3. WE ARE COMFORTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT - John 14:15-17 If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

4. WE ARE COMFORTED BY GOD'S WORD - Romans 15:4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

5. WE ARE COMFORTED BY GOD’S MEN - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Titus 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Jude 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

6. WE ARE COMFORTED BY THE BRETHREN - Acts 16:40 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them, and departed.

Romans 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

7. WE ARE COMFORTED BY OUR HOPE - Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
