John 1:4-9
Introduction:
A. John 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. A very important and interesting verse we find here. In Christ we find both life and light are one! In Him was life and the life was the light of men.
B. We normally preach life and light as two separate entities, but the Bible declares them to be one and the same.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
(Christ, Who is our life is the Light of the world. I very important truth is set forth here. Christ is life and light. These two attributes of Christ are inseparable because they are one!)
C. In Him, the Word, was life of man. There is no life outside of either the Incarnate Word or the Inscribed Word.
1. The Incarnate Word - John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: (There is no life outside of Christ Jesus.)
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? (56) The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. The Inscribed Word - Philippians 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain. (There is no life outside of the Word of God, your Bible!)
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
D. In Him, the Word, was light of man. There is no light outside of either the Incarnate Word of the Inscribed Word.
1. The Incarnate Word - John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
2. The Inscribed Word - Psalms 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
E. In the First Mention of life in man, God gave Adam the breath of God and Adam became a “living soul.” That life was eternal as God infused His life into Adam and that life was both and light.
John 1:9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (Every person born since Adam has had both the eternal life of God and the knowledge of the Creator infused within them through the preservation of Adam’s seed.)
F. John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. This verse does not say that men comprehended it not, but that darkness comprehended it not. In the First Mention of “darkness,” God set forth the truth of division. Light and darkness CANNOT co-exist as light dispels darkness and darkness is a lack of light.)
Genesis 1:4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. (The light was good but the darkness was not!)
John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
Matthew 6:23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
G. Every man and woman have the light of the knowledge of God inherently. I have often said that if there as no God the there was no spiritual knowledge of God, and all people would be born atheistic but just the opposite is true. Every tribe, every people everywhere worship something. This is the result of an inward spiritual knowledge or light that there is a Creator.
H. For a person to become atheistic, they must willfully quench the light of God within! As they gradually quench the light, the light goes out and they remain eternally in the darkness where no light is!
J. The First and Last Mentions of life and light in the Bible are important ones as they establish a great spiritual truth. First and Last Mentions are consistent with each other.
1. The First Mention of Life is gives another great spiritual truth. God breathed eternal life into Adam’s nostrils. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
2. The Last Mention of life speaks of eternal life. Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
3. The First Mention of Light - Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
God breathed out through the spoken Word, Jehovah God – Jesus Christ, light. This was not natural light because the heavenly bodies were not yet created and there were no fires or lightening; this was not artificial light because there was neither man nor invention; this was the light of God.
4. The Last Mention of light is also an important one as it concurs with the First Mention. The First and Last Mentions are always consistent.
Revelation 22:5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
(The heavenly bodies will no longer be needed as the light of God once more will be the light of the world.)
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
