Fight The Good Fight Of Faith - Memorial Day 2020

1 Timothy 6:12


Introduction: 

A.  Tomorrow, May 25,2020, is Memorial Day.  Recognize Veterans.

1.  The day in which we honor our war dead: men and women who paid the ultimate price for our freedom that we enjoy today.  

2.  “All gave some but some gave all.”  Their lives were cut short; they died in their youth; their dreams were never realized; their dreams can only be realized through us!

3.  Would have been friends, neighbors, doctors, lawyers, teachers, mill workers, miners, store owners, moms, and dads—America’s youth, America’s strength, America’s future!

B.  As we enjoy our freedom and blessings tomorrow, our day trips, picnics lunches, grilled favorites, do not fail to remember those who will not be there to enjoy them with us! 

1.  These statistics are several years old.  In all the American wars, either by our country or within our country, over 45,000,000 men and women have served in wartime with app. 1,175,000 war dead and app. 1,500,000 wounded in action. 

2.  That is a tremendous number of young lives that have been given and families forever changed while affording us the freedom that we now enjoy. 

3.  I knew a soldier who, as an 18-year-old was carrying a machine gun, wading through the waters of the Pacific Islands under heavy fire, watching his buddies die before his eyes.  He grew up that day. 

4.  I remember a man who, as young artillery man, coming on shore at Omaha Beach on D+2, watching them as they carried away the dead and wounded. 

5.  I have known men who fought through the harsh winters of Korea, walked through the jungles of Viet Nam, died in the middle east and continue to die until this day for our freedom. 

6.  My thoughts go to Arlington National Cemetery and to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and read the inscription, “Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.”

C.  Freedom in a privilege, not a right!  Citizenship is a privilege, not a right!  There are many living in this country that enjoy the freedoms while misusing them. 

1.  We do not have the freedom to do wrong in this land. 

2.  We do not have the freedom to live here and defame this land.

3.  We have not right to burn the American Flag.

4.  America has had some sordidness in its history and still is not a perfect land, but it is my country and I say, “Love it or leave it.”

5.  Come to America but come legal, learn the language (I do not speak Spanish), salute the flag, pay your taxes, be productive, get a job, and be a good citizen!

6.  You are not here because it is your right; you are here because you are privileged to live here.  This is our country, one nation under GOD, paid for with the blood of our valiant youth!

D.  War is not something that any sane man or woman wants, but we find in our text that war is sometimes a necessity. 

1.  Men who will not fight will not remain free. 

2.  Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death!”  It is the cry of the patriot and is the prerequisite for freedom.  To live free, some must sometimes die.

E.  God bless the memory of our war dead; God bless our troops; God bless America!

F.  This morning, for a few minutes, I want to look at a different type of war casualty.  You and I are in a spiritual warfare today.  It is a war just as real as physical wars are real.  We have spiritually what we have this morning because someone paid a great price.

1.  From the blood of Abel to those who are martyred in other countries today, blood has been shed as men earnestly contended for the faith once delivered.

2.  Throughout history, men and women have been tortured and died because they were not willing to recant concerning their faith.  We have the witness of the Scriptures; we have the witness of books such as “Fox’s Book of Martyrs” and “Trail of Blood.”  Over 50 million died for their faith in the Dark Ages alone.

3.  We have the witness of both church and secular historians who have brought to us the reality of these sacrifices.  Millions upon millions have and will die for their faith.  While we sit free in America, Christians still die in other lands and our nation is becoming less and less “Christian Friendly.”

Hebrews 11:33-38  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,  (34)  Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.  (35)  Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:  (36)  And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:  (37)  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;  (38)  (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
Revelation 6:9-11  And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:  (10)  And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?  (11)  And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.

G.  Because of the sufferings and death of these and countless others like them, we are spiritually blessed!

1.  We have the blessing of a pure Bible!  Without those who suffered and died for this old Book that I hold; we would not be so blessed.  I know that preservation is an act of God—not an act of man—but God used men who were willing to suffer reproach and often die that we might have it.  This morning, I want to say, “Thank you for my Bible!”

2.  We have the blessing of our Faith once delivered!  Without those who suffered and died, I would not know the way to heaven!  They prayed and many “paid” that I might have the privilege of knowing how to be saved.  So many denominations have departed from the faith into “Cain Worship.”  They are now right with God because they are “right with God?”  I am glad that my salvation is by grace through faith.  Many have been persecuted for their unwillingness to capitulate on the doctrine of salvation.  I am glad that I know that Jesus Christ is the only Way to heaven.  This morning, I want to say, “Thank you for my Salvation!”

3.  We have the blessing of Fathers to follow!  Not only do we have the Bible and a wonderful Salvation, we have the “Old Paths” wherein is the right way and the good way.  Our doctrine is pure, our separation is purposed, and our path is well trodden by those who went before.  Many have suffered and died to make those paths well defined and easy to follow.  Many are leaving the “Old Paths” for the “New Paths” in order to draw crowds and avoid persecution.  In the “Old Paths,” we are different from this present evil world that the Lord died to deliver us from.  We are not saved in our sin; we are not saved to sin; we are saved from our sin!  I love the “Old Paths” that our fathers trod and will not forsake them for the “New Paths” that the world follows.  The “Old Paths” are the right ways!  They are the good ways!  This morning, I want to say, “Thank you for leading me into the Old Paths!”

4.  We have the blessing of Truth to guard us!  We live in days of spiritual deception.  This past week, a spiritual “crackpot” denied clear Scripture concerning the time of our Lord’s return.  He brought reproach to the Second Coming of Christ by the news media.  He gave the scoffers an occasion to blaspheme by saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?”  There are men and women on every hand who claim to be either the Messiah or claim to know Him and, at the same time, preach doctrines contrary to clear Scripture.  They are being followed by those who will one day be sent “strong delusion” and be damned eternally.  I am glad that I know the Truth of God’s Word.  I accept it as Truth.  I follow it as Truth.  This morning, I want to say, “Thank you for teaching me the Truth!”

Conclusion:  Tomorrow is Memorial Day.  Let us remember our war dead.  Let us remember those who gave their lives for our Freedom!  Let us also remember those who gave their lives for our Faith!

The Faith of Rahab

Hebrews 11:31; Joshua 2:1-21

Introduction:
A.  Last week, we saw, by the power of God, that the wall of Jericho “fell down flat!”
Joshua 6:20  So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
B.  “Flat” – to depress or the bottom.  For the wall to become “flat,” there could not be one stone left upon another.  This is what our Lord spoke of in the Book of Matthew.
Matthew 24:1-2  And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.  (2)  And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
C.  Rahab “lodged” upon the wall.
D.  Tonight, we will look at one of my favorite Bible characters, Rahab.  I once preached a message titled “Whatever Happened To The Prostitute Who Lived On Wall Street.”  It was a Mother’s Day message about women with a sordid past who got saved, their lives changed, and they became good mothers.  My message was that good mothers are not born, they are made.
E.  Rahab was such a woman. 
1.  Rahab’s Character – Verse 1 – “an harlot’s house”
a.  Her Person – Rahab was a harlot!  A woman of ill-repute.  “Harlot” means an adulteress, a whore, or to be wanton.  I had a man try to convince me that the word harlot meant a shopkeeper.  “Harlot” 42x in 40 verses and the word means the same in each instance.
Deuteronomy 23:17-18  There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.  (18)  Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.
b.  Her Pride – “Rahab” means “Proud.”  Rahab was proud of her sinfulness as she lived in open sin upon the wall of the city, running a house of ill-repute.  She did not care what anyone thought about her.
Proverbs 8:13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
Proverbs 16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
2.  Rahab’s Condemnation – Verse 1
a.  Rahab was condemned by Birth.  Rahab lived on the wall of Jericho.  She was a Canaanite and, therefore, an enemy of God’s people
Romans 5:12a  “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin (a sinner by birth);”
b.  Rahab was condemned by Choice.  Rahab lived as a harlot.  Therefore, she was a sinner by choice.
Romans 5:12b  “and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (sinners by choice):”
a.  She housed the spies, knowing who they were.  Verse 1 – “lodged there”
b.  She hid the spies, knowing the penalty of doing so.  Verses 4-6 – “hid them”
4.  Rahab’s Convincing – Verses 8-10
a.  Rahab heard who the Lord of Israel was.  Verse 9 – “I know that the Lord hath given you the land”
b.  Rahab heard what the Lord of Israel did.  Verse 10 – “For we have heard how the LORD … dried up the waters of the Red Sea for you … what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. ”
5.  Rahab’s Choice – Verses 11-17
a.  The Choice of God’s Person – Verse 11 – “for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. 
Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
b.  The Choice of God’s People – Verses 12-13 – “Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token: And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death. 
Ephesians 3:14-15  For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,  (15)  Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
c.  The Choice of God’s Payment.  Colossians 1:14  In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (“this line of scarlet thread”  Typical of the blood of Christ that was to be shed.  From Genesis, chapter 3, throughout the Bible—this line of scarlet thread is the precious blood of Christ that purchased our redemption.)
6.  Rahab’s Conversion – Verses 18-21 
a.  Rahab’s Testimony.  Hebrews 11:31  By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
b.  Rahab’s Toil.  James_2:25  Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
c.  Rahab’s Transformation.  Matthew 1:5a  And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab;  (In the genealogy of our Lord, the word “harlot” is not associated with Rachab!)
7.  Rahab’s Contribution - Matthew 1:5-6  And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;  (6)  And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;  (Rachab-Rahab, was the Great-Great Grandmother of David through which was established the throne of David and the everlasting throne of Christ.)

Laodicea: The Drag-Net

Matthew 13:47-51


Introduction:

A.  Laodicea: The End Time Church, The Lukewarm Church, The Materialistic Church.

B.  The Parable of the Drag Net is a not-so-beautiful type of the Laodicea Church Age.  But it shows us the real picture of where we are today as far as the “run of the mill” local churches of the Bible Belt.

C.  I do not want to rehearse the “How did we get from there to here” tonight but do want to use this parable to get a better understanding of what is going on.

D.  Where are we at in the Laodicean Church Age?

1.  The Kingdom of Heaven – an earthly kingdom: the end of the world and the beginning of the Millennial Reign of Christ.  A lot of people confuse the Kingdom of Heaven with the Kingdom of God.  The Kingdom of God is a heavenly Kingdom.

a.  This parable is the end-time church of the Laodiceans.  The Lord is coming and the body of Christ is leaving.  The Tribulation Period will last for seven years, while we are in heaven at the Judgment Seat of Christ and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.

b.  In Revelation, chapter 19, the Lord is coming back to set up His earthly Kingdom where He will rule and reign for 1,000 years.

c.  I will not deal with Eschatology in general tonight because that is a series unto itself but just want to look at the parable.

2.  The Net is the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

a.  The Net is a finished work:  the death—according to the Scriptures, burial, and resurrection—according to the Scriptures.

b.  The Net is a tool used to catch fish.  Mark 1:16  Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.  

3.  God’s children are “fishers of men.”  Mark 1:17  And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.  (Notice that these men were casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.)

a.  These are to sow indiscriminately.  “cast a net into the sea.”

Matthew 13:3  And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;  (The sower did not pick just what he thought would be “good ground,” but broadcast the seed.)

b.  The “sea” is a type of the masses of humanity in this world.  “all the world” and to “every creature.”

c.  The net gathered “every kind.”  Our work is to cast the net and trust the Lord with who we catch.

1)  Some seed will fall on good ground and people come to Christ by faith.

2)  Some seed will fall on bad ground and, though they may make a profession, the hearer will remain lost.

Possessors – Good ground
Professors – Good seed


4.  There will be a separating.  John 5:28-29  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,  (29)  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Matthew 13:30  Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

a.  There will be a gathering of the good.  Those in the net who are truly saved.

John 10:14, 27  I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine … My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:  

b.  There will be a casting of the bad.  Those in the net who are not saved.

Revelation 20:15  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

5.  The problem with the Laodicean Church Age: this age has churches with both saved and lost members.  Generally, the unsaved have certain characteristics:

a.  A lack of holiness. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

b.  A lack of faithfulness.  1 Corinthians 4:2  Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

c.  A lack of brotherly love.  1 Peter 4:8  And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

d.  A lack of spiritual discernment.  1 Corinthians 2:14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

e.  A lack of obedience to Scripture.  Romans 2:7-8  To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:  (8)  But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

Conclusion:

a.  I am glad that I do not have to judge between saved and lost.  Sometimes lost people act better than saved people.  Sometimes lost people are more faithful than saved people.

b.  We will take everyone at their word concerning salvation and try to make a difference in this world while letting God do the separating as He knows the heart.  We can only look on the outside.

A Good Thing

Proverbs 18:22


Introduction:

A.  Mother’s Day is one of the most special of the year.  It is a time for “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”  (Proverbs 31:29)

B.  I am forever grateful for the mother that God gave to me!  Mom, you are always remembered, always missed and always loved!

C.  I am forever thankful for the wife that God gave to me!  A wonderful helpmeet, best friend and mother!  She is always loved and appreciated.

D.  I am ever thankful for the precious ladies that God’s has placed here at Temple.  Precious ladies who never give this pastor a headache!  ðŸ˜Š  I love each of you and appreciate every one of you.

E.  Ladies, this is your day!

F.  It is interesting what some great men have said concerning their mothers.  The mother has a tremendous influence for either good or evil in the lives of the children.

Washington Irving – “The love of a real mother is never exhausted.  It never changes-it never tires-it endures through all; in good repute, in bad repute, in the face of the world’s condemnation, a mother’s love still lives on.”

Charles Spurgeon – “I cannot tell how much I owe to the prayers of my good mother…I remember her once praying, “Now Lord, if my children go on in sin it will not be from ignorance that they perish, and my soul must bear swift witness against them at the day of judgment if they lay not hold on Christ and claim Him as their personal Savior.”

Dr. G. Campbell Morgan had 4 sons and they were all preachers.  Someone once came into the drawing room when all the family was there.  They thought they would see what Howard, one of the sons, was made of so they asked him this question: “Howard, who is the greatest preacher in your family?”  Howard had a great admiration for his father, and he looked straight across at him and then, without a moment’s hesitation, he answered, “Mother.”

May R. Coker - Motherhood is the greatest privilege of life.

Abraham Lincoln - No man is poor who has had a godly mother.

Seen on a church sign:  If evolution is true, how come mothers still have only two hands”

G.  How moms are made:  She has to be completely washable, but not plastic; have 200 moveable parts, all replaceable; run on black coffee and leftovers; have a lap that can hold three children at one time that disappears when she stands up; have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart; and have six pairs of hands.  She must have 3 pairs of eyes.  One pair of eyes is to see through the closed door as she asks the children what they are doing even though she already knows.  Another pair in the back of the head is to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can.  The third pair is in the front of the head.  They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying a single word.  She heals herself when she is sick and can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine-year-old to stand in the shower.  She is made both soft and tough.  She can endure and accomplish anything.  She will be able to think, reason, and negotiate.  She has tears as her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness, and her grief.  SHE IS BOTH SPECIAL AND SPECIALLY MADE!!!   

H.  Woman, God’s “crowning creation!”  The last thing that God did was bring forth out of Adam a woman-helpmeet-friend-confidant-lover! 

1.  Good women are getting like “hen’s teeth!”  They are scarce and hard to find, but, thank God, there are still some young ladies being raised for the Lord in such a manner as to make good, godly wives.

2.  Any woman can become a good woman if she so desires.  Godly wives and mothers are made as well as raised.  Some of you ladies may not have had the privilege of being raised in a godly, separated home, but you can give your life to the Lord and become as godly as one raised.

3.  The word “find” does not mean to stumble upon, but rather to make a diligent search.  Young men, do not fall for the first pretty face that you see because the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.  Allow your parents to be involved in the selection of a mate for life!  Man looks upon the outward but God looks upon the heart!

4.  Find – to obtain by seeking - Matthew 7:7-10   Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9  Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10  Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?  (If you seek right, the Lord will give you the right mate!)

THERE ARE SEVERAL “GOOD WOMEN” FOUND IN PROVERBS THAT I WANT TO LOOK AT THIS MORNING.  THESE THINGS MAKE A LADY AND A MOTHER SOMEONE VERY SPECIAL.

1.  The Gracious Woman - Proverbs 11:16   A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong [men] retain riches.  GRACIOUS - Favorable; kind; benevolent; merciful; disposed to forgive offenses and impart unmerited blessings. (A mother has the same attributes in many ways that God has.)

a.  A Gracious Woman Is Forgiving Woman - Nehemiah 9:17  And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage: but thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.   

b.  A Gracious Woman Is Kind Woman - Luke 4:22  And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

c.  A Gracious Woman Is Favorable Woman - Proverbs 18:22   Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.  (She brings the blessings of God on a home!)

2.  The Virtuous Woman - Proverbs 31:10   Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

a.  A Virtuous Woman Is A Moral Woman - 1 Timothy 2:9-10   In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; 10  But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
b.  A Virtuous Woman Is An Asset To Her Husband - Proverbs 12:4   A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

3.  The Wise Woman - Proverbs 14:1   Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

a.  The Wise Woman Builds Her House - Titus 2:5  To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

b.  The Foolish Woman Destroys Her House – “plucketh it down with her hands!”

4.  The God Fearing Woman - Proverbs 31:30  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

a.  The God Fearing Woman Is A Saved Woman - 1 Peter 3:2-4  While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3  Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4  But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

b.  The God Fearing Woman Is A Trusted Woman - Proverbs 31:11-12  The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12  She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

c.  The God Fearing Woman Is An Appreciated Woman - Proverbs 31:28-31  Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband [also], and he praiseth her. 29  Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 30  Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. 31  Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

            1)  Her Children – “her children”

            2)  Her Husband – “her husband”

            3)  Her Acquaintances – “in the gates”

            4)  Her Lord – “shall be praised”
