Keeping The Main Thing The Main Thing

Temple Baptist Church - 12-2-2012

1 Timothy 4:13-16

Introduction:
A. In these verses, pertaining to the operation of the local church, Paul admonishes young Timothy to keep his focus. In the midst of all that goes on both around the local church and, unfortunately, often within the local church—it is easy to lose one’s focus.
1. Sin and worldliness have now entered the local churches and sit in complete comfort on the pews.
2. Division, disgruntledness, defilement, and discouragement are almost every day occurrences. Satan is happy and God’s people are often sad.
3. Apostasy is in full swing and men that we once revered are now far removed from the moorings of the Old Paths with many saved people following them.
B. I believe that there are more than just one thing responsible for these problems.
1. Satanic infiltration as ungodly men dresses in “sheep’s clothing” and destroy God’s heritage.
2. Unsaved people, the tares among the wheat, that not only join but, in many cases, have a strangle hold on the operation and business of the local church. If they get a good man of God, they will run him off because they do not want either authority over them or conviction in their hearts.
3. Biblical ignorance which is so prevalent in the average Baptist Church. In most churches, members have little working knowledge of the Bible. I say “working knowledge” because simply learning a few verses will not ward off the horrific onslaught of Satan, false prophets, and unsaved preachers and church members. Here is the crux of the situation and Paul deals with the protective work of the Word of God.
C. The priorities of most churches have shifted. Today, less and less emphasis is being placed on what the Bible says to emphasize. Today’s emphasis, in most churches, is upon numbers, music, Christian Schools, Radio Stations, etc. These things are good things and are vital parts of the work of the church but, when they become priorities, the mission of the local church becomes secondary. Dr. Waters used to say, “Keep the main thing the main thing.”
D. In these verses, we find the keys to spiritual stability and the protection of the local church from all of the above problems that we find in our times.
1. Reading - Deuteronomy 17:19-20 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: (20) That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel. (One of the most important aspects of the pulpit is the magnification of God’s Word. The liberal crowd says that we are majoring on a minor when we stand for the King James Bible but they are so wrong. The Bible is the MAJOR! It is the foundation of our faith; it is the authority for our practice; it is our guide in these last perilous days; it is the rock upon which we stand; and our anchor in the shifting sands of human theology. It is right and anything contrary to it is wrong.)
2. Exhortation - Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Satan spends much time “resisting” God’s people in order to discourage. The way he does this is simple: by keeping our eyes on what is going on around us. When we come to God’s house, we find our comfort, fellowship, and encouragement in one another. No wonder the Bible says “so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”)
3. Doctrine - 2 Timothy 3:13-16 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. (14) But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; (15) And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (Correct doctrine is the anchor of our faith because it encompasses the entirety of God’s Word. The Bible is correct doctrine! The false prophets say, “Lay aside your doctrine that divides and come together in the love of God.” We cannot love right if we do not believe right! Worship must have the aspect of truth as well as spirit.)
4. Preaching - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (Teaching informs the intellect with facts of faith and is extremely important. Many skip Sunday School where we teach the Bible verse by verse and book by book. It shows a lack of spiritual priority because teaching is essential to our spiritual wellbeing. “Teaching them to observe all things” is a part of the Great Commission or Commandment. Preaching convicts the soul! Preaching demands a life decision! Preaching inspires and encourages the soul! Preaching is hated by the religious sinner and the carnal saint but is the lifeline of the God loving, Bible believing child of God!)
5. Application:
a. Meditation - Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
b. Application James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
c. Protection - 1 Timothy 4:16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

The Eternality Of Christ

Temple Baptist Church - 12-2-2012
John 1:1-3

Introduction:

A. As we approach Christmas, our thoughts turn to the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the four gospels, we find the fullness of the God-Man, Jesus Christ. The perfection of the Bible shows in these four gospels the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1. Matthew portrays Christ as the King of Israel and its genealogy is reckoned from Abraham.

2. Mark portrays Christ as the Servant of Man and has no recorded genealogy as servants birth was not recorded.

3. Luke portrays Christ as the Son of Man and its genealogy is reckoned from Joseph back to Adam who was the son of God.

4. John portrays Christ as the Word and speaks of His divinity. John has no genealogy because God has none. It is in John that we see the Person and eternality of Christ.

B. All cults believe something wrong concerning the person of Christ and much of the wrong theology has to do with who He was before the incarnation. 2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

1. Islam portrays Him as merely a prophet or an ordinary but good man.

2. Jehovah’s Witnesses portray Him as merely a “son of God.”

3. Mormons portray Him as Satan’s brother, a created being—a mere angel who came to die for sin.

4. Catholics portray Him is the “crucified” son of Mary, The Mother Of God.

5. Pictures portray Him as some long haired, Anglo-Saxon effeminate.

6. Religionists portray Him as their “little buddy” instead of the Almighty LORD God.

7. Most “isms” and “Schisms” simply ignore Him and worship idols.

8. Many Baptists portray Him as a non-judgmental Savior who is not Lord.

9. BUT, the Scriptures portray Him in a full and wonderful light as the God of all ages!

10. The Word of God specifically deals with just who Christ is in John 1.

C. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. (Here are a few profound verses dealing with the perpetually of Jesus Christ: Jehovah God.)

Psalms 90:1-2 Psalms 90:1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Psalms 93:1-2 The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved. (2) Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. (This reference can only be applied to the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ thus declaring that Christ is Jehovah God and He is eternal.)

1. Who He Was. Jesus Christ, as Jehovah God, has always existed! John 1:1 corresponds with Genesis 1:1.

a. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God!” This is the most profound statement in theology.

1) Nowhere in the Bible is there an effort to prove the existence of God; Genesis 1:1 is a statement of fact. God is infinite in His person!

2) Eternity or infinity is a concept impossible to grasp because, in our finite minds, everything that we see or how we perceive the things that see seemingly has both a beginning and an end.

3) God has always existed and will always exist: He is eternal. In Isaiah 57:15, the Bible declares that God “inhabiteth eternity.” (The word “inhabiteth” is in a continuing sense and means to perpetually reside or to abide. God does not live in time. In the midst of eternity, God created 7,000 years of time with eternity stretching both before and after.)

b. John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word.”

1) Once again, this is a declaration of fact, not one for argument or discussion. In this chapter, we find the Word was with God, the Word was God, the Word was Creator, and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. (Verses 1-3)

2) The Word was and is Jesus Christ. Thus eliminating the flawed theology of Christ deniers listed previously. (Verse 14)

c. John 8:57-58 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? (58) Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. (Jesus used the words “I am” in many instances to reveal to Israel who He was. He not only declared Himself to be the Son of God but also Jehovah God, the Eternal One. The Jews fully understood the ramifications of this statement and took up stones to stone Him.)

2. Who He Is. Jehovah God became Jesus Christ. Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

a. The Sinner’s Sacrifice - John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

b. The Saint’s Saviour - Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (10) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; (11) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

c. The Church’s Hope - John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

3. Who He Will Be. Revelation 19:13-16 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. (14) And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. (15) And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. (16) And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

a. The Word of God - John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (Jesus Christ was, is, and always be the Word of God—forever settled in all of His wonderful perfection.)

b. The King of Kings and Lord of Lords - 1 Timothy 6:15-16 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; (16) Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (Today, every knee should bow but, in that day, every knee WILL bow to the Lord Jesus Christ.)

Unto God … Be Glory

Temple Baptist Church - 11-28-2012

Philippians 4:20

Introduction:
A. As with most of the Pauline Epistles, Philippians ends with a Doxology or Praise. Doxology is defines as: a short hymn of praises to God in various Christian worship services, often added to the end of canticles, psalms, and hymns.
B. Philippians 4:20 has two different aspects of “glory” because of the context in which it is written. “Glory” can be either an attribute of God or something attributed to God and I believe both cases fit here.
1. There is the Glory Due His Person. Paul recognized who God was and glorified Him. We should do the same.
2. There is the Glory Derived from His Performance. In this chapter, Paul recognized what God had done and glorified Him for it. We should do the same.
C. I want to look at these two things as we finish this epistle. This will be an ongoing message so I am not sending it out as of yet.
1. His Glory Is Found In His Creation – What He made. Psalms 19:1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. (I will not spend as much time on this as the Lord did as He created the heavens and the earth in 6 days! There is so much that could be said that even the scientists and astronomers cannot but skim the surface. The evolutionists try to explain it all without intelligent design but only when God is in the mix can the universe plus mankind be explained.)
The heavens declare the glory of God! The universe is, as far as humanity is concerned, limitless. Its vastness boggles the minds of the most intelligent of men. As I look into the heavens, I see the fingerprint of divine intelligence. Man not only cannot comprehend but also cannot imagine the greatness and vastness of God’s creation. We see God in the heavens as they proclaim His greatness; as they set forth His intelligence; as they demonstrate His wisdom; and implicate His fathomless power.
The sun is 93,000,000 miles away
The sun is 1,300,000 larger than earth
Betelgeuse is 248 times larger than the sun
Arcturus 25,600 times larger than the sun
Antares – a double star is 400,000,000 mi in diameter
- four time the distance from sun to earth
- Earth cold orbit the sun is half of Antares
Eplison – diameter is 10 times that of Betelgeuse
Or 2,150,000,000 miles in diameter
Scientist believe many are much larger
Our galaxy contains – 100 billion stars
At least a billion more galaxies
As many stars as grains of sand as on all sea shores
Light travels at the speed of 186,000 miles per second
A light year is 6 trillion miles
It takes 100 years for light to travel to earth from Betelgeuse
Our closest star is Alpha Centari - 25 trillion miles away
It takes light 4 ½ years to travel to earth
Takes 100,000 years for light to travel across our universe
God said the Abraham, “ Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them:”(Genesis 15:5) He again said, “And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven.” (Genesis 26:4) And once again, “As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured:”(Jeremiah 33:22) Isaiah wrote, “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:” (Isaiah 40:22) Surely the heavens do declare the glory of God. We have a big God.
The microscope declares the glory of God.
If the vast size of creation doesn’t impress us, then maybe the infinite smallness of creation will. Creation is built with molecules.
The molecules in ¼ ounce or a teaspoon of water
Contains 9,940,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 - 99422 or 9 Octillion, 940 sextillion
If each one of these were as big as a grain of sand
We could build a 6 lane highway from NYC to San Francisco
Atoms are much smaller and are inside the molecule.
Rearranging them we can have a million chemical compounds
We have over a hundred basic elements.
There are three major particles – protons
- neutrons
- electrons
Electrons circle around the nucleus a million times per second
Also down inside are - particles
- photons
- pions
- positrons
- neutrinos
- mesons
- anti-particles
- sub atomic worlds
Nuclear Energy: Scientists believe that the inside of the nucleus of the atom is a core surrounded by a fluctuating cloud of peons whirling around the nucleus in orbit millions of times per second. An infinitesimal planetary system inside an already infinitesimal planetary system so small that this core occupies only a thousandth of a millionth of a millionth of the speck within the atom, known as nuclear energy. One pound of nuclear energy converted to electrical energy would operate every electrical appliance in the world for one whole year.
The seas declare the glory of God.
The oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth's surface and contain 97 percent of the Earth's water. Less than 1 percent is fresh water, and 2-3 percent is contained in glaciers and ice caps.
Earth's longest mountain range is the Mid-Ocean Ridge, which winds around the globe from the Arctic Ocean to the Atlantic, skirting Africa, Asia and Australia, and crossing the Pacific to the west coast of North America. It is four times longer than the Andes, Rockies, and Himalayas combined.
At the deepest point in the ocean the pressure is more than 8 tons per square inch, or the equivalent of one person trying to support 50 jumbo jets.
At 39 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature of almost all of the deep ocean is only a few degrees above freezing.
If mined, all the gold suspended in the world's seawater would give each person on Earth 9 pounds.
If the ocean's total salt content were dried, it would cover the continents to a depth of 5 feet.
Undersea earthquakes and other disturbances cause tsunamis, or great waves. The largest recorded tsunami measured 210 feet above sea level when it reached Siberia's Kamchatka Peninsula in 1737.
The ocean averaged two miles in depth
Land averages ½ mile in height
If leveled water would cover the earth by 1½ miles.
God asked Job, “Who shut up the sea with doors”?
Each cubic mile of ocean water contains:
93,000,000 dollars of gold
8,500,000 in silver
5 billion dollars of chemicals
Plus the wealth of lobster, oyster, crabs, & fish
Waves continually oxidize the water
Currents keep the temperature steady (some clockwise) others counterclockwise.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is almost twice the size of the United States.
The balance and beauty of nature declares the glory of God.
The majesty of the mountains.
The beauty of the rivers and woodlands.
The sweeping aura the plains.
The wonder of a flower and the glory of a tree.
The warmth of the sun or the chill of a wintery wind.
The feel of rain and snow on your cheeks.
The glory of the sunrise over the ocean.
The beauty of the sunset over the mountain’s peaks.
The wonder of the four seasons. Spring’s budding; summer’s warmth and beauty; the foliage of fall; and the whiteness of a winter’s day.
The balance of nature. As ships and places have gyroscopes for balance, God has put checks and balances in nature.
Bats and birds keep insects in check
Large fish eat smaller ones.
Worms are eaten by frogs
Frogs are eaten by snakes
Snakes are eaten by hawks
Hawks also keep the mouse population in check
Rats and mice have 5 or 6 litters each season
They usually average 10 per litter
Thankfully they have enemies like the fox, coyote, badger, skunks, weasels, wild cats, hawks, ravens, crows, snakes & lizards.
1 adult fly will lay 500 eggs = be grown in a week
Unchecked in 6 months 50’ deep over earth
There are over 1,000,000 different kinds of insects
60,000 different kinds of spiders – most eat flies
1 frog will eat 50 flies per minute
A swallow will eat 2,000 mosquitoes per day
Wren will eats it’s weight in flies per day
Cod fish will lay 4,000,000 eggs per season
Oysters lay 100, million eggs per season
Sunfish lay 300, million eggs per season
Fish eat eggs and smaller fish to check this
In nature there are Patterns
In nature there are Designs
In nature there are Colors
In nature there are Shades
In nature there are Hues
In nature there are Shapes
Cherry blossoms in Washington, DC in Spring
Orange blossoms in Florida
Sunrises and sunsets (caused by dust particles)

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. (In six literal 24 hour days, God made it all and man has been trying to figure it all out ever since! What a God!)
2. His Glory Is Found In His Provision. In the previous message above, we found the greatness of God’s intelligence, wisdom, and power which shows His ability to perform. He created the heavens, the earth, and all that in them is with all of their perfection. That same intelligence, wisdom, and power shelters and showers blessing upon God’s children. In chapter 4, we find both needs and plenty.
a. The allows His children to have hard places in this life because it is in these times that we find our strength, safety, and supply in Christ Jesus. God’s people have suffered through the centuries but I believe that eternity will prove that He was bot with us and for us in every circumstance of this life.
b. Paul is ascribing glory to God for both the hard times and the good times; for both the times of necessity and the times of plenty. I believe that the lesson for each of us is not to be a “fair weather” Christian. We hear of “fair weather” friends who are there when you do not need them and vacate the premises when you do. I have seen so many who served the Lord when the going was easy and gave up the ship when things “went south.” The Lord is good all of the time.
c. The Lord does not protect us all of the time from circumstances but He does protect us in our circumstances.
d. We need to give God glory because of what He does for each of us.
1) Give Him glory because He is with us in our hard times because He said, “I will never leave thee!” Like Job, we do not always perceive Him because we are human and our circumstances shroud His presence. But our perception has nothing to do with His presence. His presence as assured to us through promise and God never breaks His promises. Our fears are baseless when our all-knowing, all-powerful, ever present Saviour is on hand. He never slumbers nor sleeps.
2) Give Him glory because He protects us in our hard times because He said, “Nor forsake thee.” As I look back through the years, I have been well protected and can lay my head on my pillow in peace knowing that Someone is watching over me while I am helpless. We saw His intelligence, wisdom, and power in the first part of this message as He created the heavens and the earth along with all that in them is. If He can do that, and He did, then He can certainly take care of you and me when we need Him to.
3) Give Him glory because He provides where He guides because He said, “All your needs.” I am nothing special but I know what it is to give up our home, job, friends, family, security, hopes and dreams and step out by faith based upon one verse of the Bible (Matthew 9:38). Hebrews 11:13b-14 says, “Not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.” To pull up stakes and move to a place never dreamed of beforehand and serve and love a people never met. God is able and willing to care for each of us as if we were His only child. You can count on Him.
4) Give Him glory because of His mercy and grace. We certainly have not been rewarded according to our iniquity. I find God’s dealings with His children amazing as He is completely holy and yet He is completely forgiving. He is completely righteous and yet He is longsuffering and merciful. No license to sin here but an eternal gratitude for 1 John 1:9 and His 70x7 in forgiveness.
5) Give Him glory because of the sonship bestowed upon us. “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.” One of the greatest causes of our glorification of the Lord is that of adoption. Sonship is a wonderful thing but, with our natural children, we did not know who or what we would get when the children were born. I know that every good parent is proud of their children and would have chosen them if the opportunity was there. Adoption is different. When adopting, you normally know who and what you are getting.
3. His Glory Is Found In His People. 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
a. Glorify God In Your Walk - 1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
