The Accountability Of Creation

Temple Baptist Church - 4-19-2015
Psalm 19:1-6

Introduction:

A.  On a trip to the Atlantic Ocean, I sat and pondered the vastness of the body of water.

1.  Its size (71% of the earth’s surface is covered with water with 97% of all water in the oceans and seas), purpose (earth’s water purification plant), plant and animal life, and importance to human life and was once again filled with awe at the greatness and wisdom of our Creator, Jesus Christ.  From horizon to horizon, nothing but water, wind, and waves.

2.  The great ocean, “foaming out its shame,” leaving soap-like bubbles in its wake as the great waves receded.  A ceaseless agitator of water and brine that purifies our planet.  I thought about the delicate balance of nature as the hunter becomes the hunted with each and every plant and creature necessary to the complete life of each other.  Nothing in God’s creation is without purpose or place and all works in a perfect harmony that no being other than God could make.

B.  It caused me to ponder the earth in all of its glory and wonder.

1.  As in the oceans and seas, so is the perfect balance of nature upon the dry land.  The mountains and valleys, the animal and plant life, all rivers returning to the sea from which they came. The gentle rain and warmth of the sun.  The necessity of four seasons for the earth to prune and replenish life.  Nothing without purpose; nothing unnecessary, nothing to be improved upon.

2.  Man in all of his perfection, wonderfully and fearfully made!  His intelligence and ability to rule of God’s creation.  Man, made different from the animals in that he is a trichotomy: body, soul, and spirit.  His ability to reason with logic and define his one future with his intelligence.

C.  I looked up at God’s heaven and saw its vastness and brilliance.

1.  Scientists say that there are 300-400 million stars with a possibility of over 1 trillion in the Milky Way Galaxy in which we live.  Possibly 100 billion planets in the Milky Way alone.  It is possibly 180,000 light years in diameter.  One light year is app. 6 trillion miles.  Scientists estimate that there are over 500 billion other galaxies in the universe but readily admit that it may be limitless!

2.  Every planet, every solar system, every galaxy perfectly synchronized to run as no Swiss Watch ever could.  Perfect in its design and harmony.  Beyond our capability to understand, much less explore!  With the discovery of every new galaxy, its vastness hides from view countless others.

3.  A trillion times a trillion times a trillion times a trillion light years of travel would only touch the “hem” of this vast universe in which we live!   When I look up, I see more than stars and planets, I see the wisdom and hand of an Almighty Creator!  Why did God make our heavens so big when we can only see such a small amount of stars?  I guess to confound and convince even the most ardent unbelieving scientist that only God could have made it.  Also, God spanned it with His hand to show how far you and I would have to walk to take ourselves out of His hand!  (John 10:29)

D.  I thought about the human body.  Psalms 139:14  I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; andthat my soul knoweth right well.

1.  Doctors are still just “practicing” medicine because their theories and tactics are constantly changing.  I will not go into the facts concerning the human body but it is a marvel with all of its parts and design.

2.  To watch a child grow in its mother’s womb from microscopic to that beautiful child that you hold in your hands should be enough to convince even the most skeptical of men that there is a God!

E.  I thought of the utter foolishness of man’s wisdom and science falsely so called.  It takes more faith to believe in evolution that it does creation.  Evolution would be a much greater miracle than a God who designed it all.  No wonder the Psalmist said, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.”  (Psalm 14:1)

1.  The Account of God’s Creation is found in “In the beginning God!”  These four words are the greatest statement in all of theology!  Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

a.  The Bible is correct in every aspect and can be relied upon without question: it is historically correct, it is scientifically correct, it is medically correct, it is geologically correct, it is archaeologically correct, it is geographically correct.  Its prophecies are all correct.  It was correct in all of these areas before the knowledge of man “discovered” them.

b.  It is also correct in its account of creation because evolution, which denies intelligent design, has not worked nor can it ever work.  Creation is proven not only through the vastness and perfection of all things but also through the harmony in which all things exist.

c.  In the first two chapters of the Bible, God said everything that needed to be said about the beginnings of the earth and its universe!

“This Book is the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding; its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s character. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.” ~Copied

2.  The Act of God’s Creation is found in “And God said, Let there be.”  Here we find the power and scope of the spoken Word!  Genesis 1:3  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

a.  Before anything was, God always was.  “In the beginning God” is the most profound of all theological statements!  John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  (2)  The same was in the beginning with God.  (3)  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

b.  God’s act of creation is shown in its perfection and harmony!  In our text, we find the word “handywork” which means “art.”  The universe and world in which we live is a masterpiece that is unparalleled! Psalms 19:1  The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

c.  Declare – to show forth!  To state emphatically or authoritatively; affirm.  God gives no place for either discussion or argument.  Creation is an act to be believed or not to be believed, the choice belongs to every individual!

3.  The Accuracy of God’s Creation is found in “it was very good!”  Genesis 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it wasvery good.

a.  I have dealt with this enough!  God did a perfect work that no evolution could ever perform!  John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  (2)  The same was in the beginning with God.  (3)  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

b.  JUST LOOK AROUND YOU!  It is of no wonder that God looked upon all that He had created and said that it was “very good!”  The first two chapters of Genesis go into detail as to what God did.

4.  The Accountability of God’s Creation is found in “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.”  (Romans 1:20)  (Clearly seen … being understood shows the willfulness of rejecting the light of the knowledge of God!)

Psalms 19:1-5  The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.  (2)  Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.  (3)  There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.  (4)  Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,  (5)  Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.  (Everyone, everywhere sees the handiwork of God in creation.)

Romans 1:19  Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them (Not to them.); for God hath shewed it unto them

John 1:9-11  That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.  (10)  He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.  (11)  He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  (Man is innately religious, not atheistic!  There is the knowledge of God placed in their hearts and that knowledge must be suppressed in order to become an atheist.)

Conclusion:  I am not big on four points and a poem but a poem did come to mind that shows the handiwork of God in the making of a tree.
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair.
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

A Treasure In An Earthen Vessel

Temple Baptist Church - 4-12-2015
2 Corinthians 4:5-7; Psalm 138:1-2

Introduction:

A.  Often, I spend a little time preaching on God’s Word, the King James Bible for English speaking people.  Titus 1:1  Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

1.  I was reading in the Book of Titus the other day and a phrase stood out concerning “the truth.”  Not “a truth” but using the definite article “the truth!”  The implication of the use of the definite article “the” is that this particular truth (for there are many kinds of “truth”) is one of a kind. There is none like it and there is none beside of it.

2.  Words in the Bible are there to be studied and none are meaningless.  God wastes no time or breath speaking concerning things that do not matter and wastes no words in doing so.  Every word of God is necessary for rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

B.  Paul, when writing to young Timothy, called the Word of God (or King James Bible in our instance) the Word of Truth.  The Bible is always 100% correct as it is inerrant (without error) and infallible (foolproof, reliable, failsafe).

C.  I want to look at our text in 2 Corinthians 4:5-7:  “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.  (6)  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  (7)  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

1.  The preached Word gives the light of knowledge to the child of God.  The treasure that is mentioned is the “we preach … Christ Jesus the Lord … the light … hath shined in our hearts … the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ … but we have this treasure in earthen vessels.”  In other words, we see all of the fullness of the glory of the Godhead in the face of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Word of God.  What a blessing to have the Bible that gives us that knowledge of God and His wonderful Word.  We now have that treasure in our earthen vessels!

2.  The Word of God is a Treasure to His children.  If you do not believe the Word of God and/or you do not love the Word of God, you had better “check up!”  It is as simple as that!  A truth to be realized is found in the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 6:21, where our Lord said,“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

3.  The preserved Word of God is a “treasure in an earthen vessel!”

a)  First Mention - Exodus 24:12  And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give theetables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.  (Inspiration.  Tables of stone, where are earthen vessels, and the Word of God which God wrote placed upon them.)

b)  Preservation - Exodus 34:1  And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write uponthese tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.  (Different set of earthen vessels made by man but same Word of God placed upon them.)

c)  The Bible that I hold in my hand is made of paper and ink!  It is an earthen vessel.  It is not the paper and ink that we hold dear; it is not the paper and ink that we worship.  It is the “Treasure” of God’s Word found upon its pages!

d)  It is the very Word of God written on these “tables of stone” that teach us about a God that loves us, was given for us, lived with us, died for us, was buried and rose again for us, and is coming again to get us!  We highly treasure the Bible!

e)  The Bible is a “treasure” that God gave to us to be treasured!  The most valuable thing that you and I have this morning is the Bible that we hold in our hands!

D.  In Psalm 138, we find the value that God places upon His Word.

1.  Notice that God does not magnify (to make large of great) His Word above His name but above “all thy name,” which refers to every name by which God is called!  Jehovah God, the Almighty God, LORD, Creator, Jesus, etc. just to name a few.

2.  The Old Testament saint so revered the name of God that they would not speak it for fear of taking it in vain.  In the New Testament, we find that all shall bow in heaven and in earth at the name of Jesus!  God magnifies His Word above all of His name!  Should we not value it as such?

3.  A Treasure is something of great value and the Bible is one of our greatest treasures.

1.  The Treasure of the Bible is to be something highly esteemed - Job 23:12  Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.  (Esteemed – to hide, protect, or to lay up!  We are to earnestly contend for the “faith once delivered!”  God will not deliver it to us again!   We do not “major on a minor” when we highly esteem, protect, and contend for the Word of God.  We are the ones who are obedient to the Bible which commands us to do so.)

2.  The Treasure of the Bible is to be something desired - Psalms 19:9-10  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.  (10)  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.  (Much more than gold and riches, more than the sweetness of honey are we to desire it.  So many believers never read it, much less study it!  It is wisdom and understanding; it is a tree of life to those who know its precepts.)

3.  The Treasure of the Bible is to be something hidden in our hearts - Psalms 119:11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.  (By hiding it in our hearts, we can remember it and meditate upon it.  The Bible will keep us from sin or sin will keep us from the Bible.)

4.  The Treasure of the Bible is to be our joy and rejoicing - Jeremiah 15:16  Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.  (What a thrill it is to begin to study the Bible and forget all that is around us.  If you have never been there, then you are missing something.  As you begin to see the Bible open before your eyes and see the “nuggets” of truth for the first time, you will lose yourself in it.)

2 Timothy 2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

5.  The Treasure of the Bible is to be shared - Romans 10:17-18  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.  (18)  But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.  (Sharing with our family, friends, and the world!  Every creature needs a preacher and “how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?”)

Deuteronomy 6:6-7  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  (7)  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

What Makes A Great Church

Temple Baptist Church - 4-5-2015
1 Thessalonians 1:1-3

Introduction:

A.  The Apostle Paul begins his letter to the church at Thessalonica with a commendation.  In his epistles to other local churches, he either commended or reprimanded.  We began our study of this precious book of the bible with a little historical introduction out of Acts, chapter 17, as to give some insight into the church’s beginnings.  The church had its beginning in the fires of persecution and continued to be persecuted through Paul’s writing to them.

B.  Before I give some of the characteristics of a great church, I want to look at some of the things that do make a church great.

1.  NUMBERS!  The independent Baptist movement has gotten just like our Baptist brothers from which we came.  How many saved?  How many baptized?  How many were in church Sunday?  And the list could go on.  These things are not, in themselves, bad.  We want people to come; we want people saved; we want people baptized; we want our Sunday School full of youth!  Any God fearing, sinner loving preacher wants to see good, spiritual as well as physical growth in the church but the numbers BELONG TO GOD!  Numbers, in themselves do not make good churches.  If numbers are equated with greatness, then the neo-evangelical movement is a great one!

2.  PROGRAMS!  Too many independent Baptist churches have gone into the entertainment industry.  We have watch the rapid rise of  “churches” in our area who have made themselves worldly, patterned after the world, in order to make worldly people comfortable when they come.  These have been called “seeker sensitive” churches.  Find out what the people want and then conform the church to it.  The local church does not need a touch of the world, it needs a touch of God!

3.  MONEY!  Too many independent Baptist churches are as worried about the offerings as they the spiritual welfare of the people.  Offerings are just that, offerings.  It is not what we can get out of the people but what the people are offering out of a willing heart.  Yes, money is important!  We support more missionaries than we have men, women, and children in our church.  It takes the sacrificial giving of the people to do the work of the ministry and support the Great Commission of going into the world and preaching the gospel to every creature.  God has all power and all resources at His command if He commanded us to go, then He has the where with all to send us!  I tell preachers to leave the offering plates alone and trust the Lord to give what He deems right and necessary.

C.  We need to see as God sees when it comes to the commendation of a great church.  Some areas are more open to the gospel than others.  All areas are hard ones but there have been great men of God who have labored for a lifetime with only a handful of converts, and yet, faithfully continued to labor in their “corner of the field.”  When we get to heaven, we want a “well done” from our Lord, not our comrades!

1.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Pay A Price For The Cause Of Christ.

2.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Stand Firm In The Face Of Spiritual Opposition.

3.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Adhere To The Old Paths Wherein The Good Way Is.

4.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Love The Word Of God And uncompromisingly Preach, Hear, And Heed It.

5.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Compassionately Win The Sinner While Hating The Sin.

6.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Be Inclusive In Its Outreach And Membership.

7.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Lovingly Stand United For The Cause Of Christ.

8.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Be A Sea Of Galilee Church Instead Of A Dead Sea One.

9.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Worship The Lord In The Beauty Of Holiness.

10.  A Great Church Is One Willing To Be Faithful To The Fight And A Finisher Of The Course.

Our God Still Moves The Stones Away!

Temple Baptist Church - 4-5-2015
Matthew 28:1-15

Introduction:

A.  Several years ago, I saw a message with a title that blessed my heart.  I do not know who preached it as there was no name attached but the thought is a glorious one.

B.  Resurrection Sunday is here; the work of the cross is finished; Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and was buried in a garden tomb.  He made his grave with the wicked in a tomb that had never been used.  Thank the Lord for His love for mankind; His sacrifice and payment for the sins of all mankind; and His glorious resurrection on the third day!  Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

C.  There is no such thing as “Good Friday” found in the scripture.  The bible declares that Jesus Christ was in the heart of the earth “three days and three nights.”

Matthew 12:40  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.  (That was a literal 72 hour period.  You cannot squeeze 72 hours in from Friday until Sunday no matter where you went to school!)

D.  The bible gives description to different holy days as “Sabbaths.”  John 19:30-31 declares this to be such a case: “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.  (31)  The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.”  (At this particular time, the Thursday before the Sabbath was referred to “an high day,” or a holy day under the ceremonial law that was to be properly observed.  Thus, Jesus Christ died on Wednesday, the day of preparation for the Sabbath that took place on Thursday.  The following day, Friday, was the preparation day for the normal Sabbath or Saturday.  Therefore, there could be not embalming of spices on Wednesday because it was the preparation day for Thursday.  There could be no embalming on Thursday because it was a “high day” or Sabbath.  There could be no embalming on Friday because it was the preparation day for the normal Sabbath which was Saturday.  There could be no embalming done on the Sabbath or Saturday.  The godly women who would have anointed the body of our Lord in preparation for burial were delayed until the first day of the week, which is our Sunday and found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty!  God’s timing is always right and the bible correct.  I hope you had a Good Wednesday!

Luke 23:52-56  This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.  (53)  And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.  (54)  And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.  (55)  And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.  (56)  And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.  (The lining up of two Sabbaths plus the preparation day that preceded them kept the women from the normal “embalming” of anointing the body with spices and properly wrapping it.  God kept that tomb closed for “three days and three nights” in fulfillment of prophecy.  The veracity and faithfulness of the bible to itself makes it simply amazing.  Scripture always interprets scripture!)

E.  The Jews did all that they could to seal that tomb and set guards to make sure that no one came to steal the body away!  Matthew 27:62-66  Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,  (63)  Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.  (64)  Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.  (65)  Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.  (66)  So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Matthew 28:11-15  Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.  (12)  And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,  (13)  Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.  (14)  And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.  (15)  So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.  (Both their watch and their lies have failed to keep the glorious truth of the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ in check!  He lives!  The bible declares that He lives!  You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart!)

F.  This morning, the bodies of Mohammed, Buddha, Confucius, Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, Charles Taze Russell, and even Mary—the earthly mother of Jesus—are all still in the grave.  Only in Christianity do we find a Resurrected Lord.  “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”  Our faith in Christ is validated because only Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, rose from the dead. No other religious leader defeated death so none other can make these claims. The resurrected Lord is the central event of our faith.  His resurrection is the “Exclamation Mark” of our hope!
G.  Salvation is a finished work, not a present work!  If your faith is a mixed faith, you are lost!  I am not saved because I am a Baptist!  I am not saved because I have been baptized!  I am not saved because I do good works!  I am not saved because I am a good man!  I am saved because all of my hope is in the finished work of Christ: death, burial, and resurrection!  It is all of Him and none of me!  He is all of my hope!  He is all of my righteousness!  Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

H.  One day, if the Lord does not return soon, we too will die!  They will carry our cold, lifeless body to the cemetery and place us under the sod.  A moment to be feared?  No!  The bible answers this the question of death once and for all for both saint and sinner.

1.  Our God will remove the “stone of death” away for the saint at the moment of death!  We will not simply be dead and in the grave.  2 Corinthians 5:8  We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.  (When the saint dies, he/she does not die alone nor in vain.  Not soul sleep; no purgatory; present with the Lord!)

Ecclesiastes 12:7  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.  (I often tell Barbara not to “set a watch” at my grave when I die.  I am all for taking care of the graves of our loved ones but they are not there.  “Ashes to ashes; dust to dust!  I will be finally home!)

2.  Our God will remove the “stone of death” away for the sinner at the moment of death!  They will not simply be dead and in the grave.  Luke 16:22-23  And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  (23)  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.  (No lighting of candles will help; no praying for the dead with help!  Salvation is a present opportunity, not a future one.  Today is and always be the day of salvation.  When tomorrow comes, it will be “today.”  Hell is real and hell is eternal!  Repent and trust Christ today!)

3.  Our God will remove the “stone of corruption” away for the saint at His coming for His church!  1 Corinthians 15:51-52  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,  (52)  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  (There is an old song that says, “Ain’t no grave going to keep my down!”  The Lord will bring those who have died in Christ with Him in the rapture of the church and the graves will give up those corrupt bodies and they will be changed.  As we meet Him in the air, our bodies will be changed as death and corruption will be forever gone.)

4.  Our God will remove the “stone of judgment” away from the Lake of Fire for the sinner one day!  Revelation 20:11-15  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  (12)  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  (13)  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  (14)  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  (15)  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.  (Today hell is well populated but the eternal Lake of Fire is empty.  It is of God’s mercy that the Lake of Fire is empty but, one day, those who have not placed their faith in the finished work of Calvary will stand before God, be judged for their works, and cast into the Lake of fire for all of eternity!  The choice is theirs!  The choice is yours!)

It’s the "TA-DA!" of Christianity. And Because of Easter, we know that God in Christ Jesus is more powerful then anything in life, even death.

The resurrection is not just another thing we believe as Christians, it is the very center of our faith. Everything hinges on the resurrection. And you realize that when life smacks you in the face.

I read the account recently of a man whose young daughter died. It was devastating for the family. But in her death, Easter took on new importance. The father said this: "Until you stare death eye-to-eye, Easter is just a word, a nice day with bunny rabbits and eggs...but when someone so precious to you dies, Easter becomes everything...an anchor in a fierce storm...a rock on which to stand...a hope that raises you above despair and keeps you going..."

Everything hinges on the resurrection. In our deepest, darkest moments. When we don’t think it can ever get better. The resurrection gives us hope that it can. When we are in the midst of day one or day two, the resurrection gives us hope that there is a day three and victory is coming.

Let me close this morning with the story of Kay Arthur. Kay Arthur is a writer, a lecturer, and many thousands of people around the world, including right here at OCC, have been impacted by the bible studies put out by Kay Arthur. She is a committed Christian Woman. But it has not always been this way for Kay Arthur.

Many years ago when she was in her twenties she was as far away from God as a person could possibly get. She was living with her husband who was manic depressive and she just got tired of living with him. She had an affair with a married man and then when her husband found out he became so depressed that he threatened suicide.
And when he threatened suicide she was so crass, so uncaring that she told him go ahead and kill yourself, I could use the life insurance money. And he did. he hung himself.
And Kay Arthur said that as she drove away from the cemetery that day she felt like such a failure as a wife, as a mother, as a person. And she felt such anger and frustration and pain. And she said as she drove away she shook her fist at the sky and she screamed, "To Hell with you God."
But she said, "what I didn’t know until later, was that that was exactly what he did for me. He gave his life, he went to the very gates of hell. And he did it for me."

You know what He did it for me also, and for you, and you and each one of us here this morning. The title of the book that relates her story is called "Lord, I need Grace."

Maybe your here this morning and your feeling the same way. And you need grace and forgiveness and hope. I guarantee you’ll find it in a resurrected Lord named Jesus Christ.

Are you here this morning needing to make a decision. Perhaps a decision to take Jesus as your Savior. To be assured that when you die, you too will rise again and be with God forever. You say, “I want that. How do I do that?”
The Bible says you believe in your heart that you are sinner in need of Savior and that Jesus is that Savior. And then the Bible says you confess that with your mouth before men, that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God, and then you get baptized, immersed in water as a pledge of your life to him.

Just as he was buried in a tomb and rose again to new life. So you are buried in the water and rise again to new life. Are you ready to make that decision. Have you done that already, and you come this morning as an immersed believer looking for a church home? Whatever your decision, why don’t you come as we stand and sing.
