Psalm 29
Introduction:
A. Once again, I believe breaking this Psalm into its parts is important. It is all about the Majesty of the Lord, the worship of His saints, and the Power of His Voice. The Psalm has been called a Psalm of Nature because of the content of its middle verses, 3-10. There are many such Psalms.
Psalms 8:1,3 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. (3) When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
Psalms 19:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Psalms 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
Psalms 104:19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.
Psalms 136:6-9 To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever. (7) To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: (8) The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: (9) The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Psalms 148:3-5 Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. (4) Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. (5) Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
B. It is Psalm meant to bring about the saint's praise and peace.
1. Praise for the greatness and power of the LORD.
2. Peace for the intervention and safety of the LORD.
C. God’s Majesty – Verses 1-2 and 10-11.
1. Verse 2 – The Glory due His name! The LORD is worthy of our praise. Psalms 150:6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. (Someone once said, “If you can’t praise the LORD, quit breathing.”)
2. Verse 10 – The LORD sitteth King for ever. The LORD will always be worthy of our praise.
D. David’s Praise – Verses 1-2.
1. Verses 1-2. Praise the LORD for who He is. Give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD worship in the beauty of holiness.
2. Verses 10-11. Praise the LORD for what He has done. Give unto the LORD praise because He gives strength and blessing to His people.
E. I want to look at a phrase found six times in this short Psalm that describes how God works. We see the phrase “The Voice of the Lord” in this short Psalm six times.
F. There are many times when God spoke in the Bible. Here are just a few of the mentions:
1. “Thus saith the LORD” – 415 times.
2. “God said” – 43 times.
3. “God spake” – 13 times.
4. “The voice of the Lord” – 50 times.
5. “Voice from Heaven” – 9 times.
6. “Voice from glory” – 12 times.
7. “Voice of God” – 1 time.
G. We will not look at every instance in which God spoke, but here is the gist of it:
1. The Voice of the LORD in Creation. Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
2. The Voice of the LORD to His Creation. Psalm 29:3-9. Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
God speaks to the elements, and He speaks to His creatures. He speaks to the storms. He speaks to the earth. God created all that is with His voice and God sustains all He created with His voice.
3. The Voice of the LORD in Conversion. John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
4. The voice of the LORD in Confirmation - John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
5. The Voice of the LORD in Communion. Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
6. The Voice of the LORD in Comfort. Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
7. The Voice of the LORD in Conviction. 1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
8. The Voice of the LORD in Carefulness - Deuteronomy 8:20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.
Jeremiah 42:5-6 Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things for the which the LORD thy God shall send thee to us. (6) Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.
9. The Voice of the LORD in Confidence. John 1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
10. The Voice of the Lord in Calling – Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Revelation 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
Conclusion: How do I know the Voice of the LORD?
1. The Voice of the Lord was a Personal Voice. John 10:3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
The Voice of the Lord is intended not just for others, but for each of us personally. God’s love, sacrifice, longsuffering, mercy, and grace are unique to every individual. Our Lord is a personal Lord!
2. The Voice of the Lord was a Distinctive Voice. John 10:4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
A voice that is distinct from all others. When God speaks, it is a one-of-a-kind voice. The Word of God that we hold in our hands this morning is unique! Distinct in its beauty and perfection, its distinction separates it from all other so-called Bibles. Its distinction sets it apart from the voices of this world and their confusion.
3. The Voice of the Lord was a Knowable Voice. John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Despite what the world says about not recognizing or accepting the Bible as the Voice of the Lord, this Voice can indeed be known and understood. Isn't it puzzling that the Bible is the most rejected and criticized "Voice" in the world?
