Psalm 128
Introduction:
A. Psalm 128 is one of the "Songs of Degrees" intended to be sung by those traveling to Jerusalem during the three major feast days when all males were required to attend.
1. These journeys were often long, dangerous, and lonely, as Jewish communities were dispersed throughout the known world. Some pilgrims came from Spain, others from deep in Africa, some from the far north, and others from the far east. It was a long and challenging journey.
2. Psalm 128 is one of the "Songs of Degrees" intended to be sung by those traveling to Jerusalem during the three feast days when all males were required to attend. These journeys were often long, dangerous, and lonely, as Jewish communities were dispersed throughout the known world. Some pilgrims came from Spain, others from deep in Africa, some from the far north, and others from the far east. It was a long and challenging journey.
B. Psalm 128 is brief, yet it contains a lasting blessing within its verses. As the pilgrims approached Jerusalem, they were reminded of the importance of fearing God and following His ways. This journey was not in vain, but rather a blessing! I fear that too often, our gathering together is taken for granted or seen as a burden by some. While it's easy to prepare for a vacation and exciting to hit the road to our desired destination, it can be challenging to take the time to get ready for church. The Upward Psalms express the excitement and joy in the hearts of these believing Jews.
C. Now, a simple breakdown of the Psalm.
1. Verse 1: A Walk Well Chosen.
2. Verse 2: A Blessing Pronounced.
3. Verses 3-4: And Example Set.
4. Verses 5-6: A Future Secured.
1. The Walk Well Chosen. Fear of God and Obedience to God’s Will and Way. Walking in the Fear of God is a choice that every believer makes.
a. Solomon, in Ecclesiastes (The Preacher), called a life given to the flesh “the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness.”
b. At the end of the book, this is the conclusion that he found that honored God: fear God and keep His commandments.
c. This would seem to be the only path the believer desires, but this is not so. In the churches of our day, we find much more love of the world than we find the love of God. More obedience to the flesh than obedience to the Spirit.
d. Paul said, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Romans 8:1)
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
2. The Blessing Bestowed.
a. Rewarded in His Work “For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands:”
Ecclesiastes 8:15 Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
b. Happy in His Life: “Happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.”
Proverbs 3:13-18 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. (14) For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. (15) She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. (16) Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. (17) Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. (18) She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
c. The Benefits of the Fear of the Lord:
1) Gives the believer Protection. Job 28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
2) Gives the believer a Clean Life. Psalms 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
3) Gives the believer Wisdom. Psalms 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
4) Gives the believer Knowledge. Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
5) Gives the believer a Long life. Proverbs 10:27 The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
6) Gives the believer Confidence. Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
7) Gives the believer a Good Life. Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
8) Gives the believer a Knowledge of God. Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.
9) Gives the believer Stability. Isaiah 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of the LORD is his treasure.
10) Gives the believer Peace and Comfort. Acts 9:31 Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.
c. Blessed in His Family “Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”
1. The Blessing of a Good Wife. A God fearing man walking in the way of the Lord will be blessed with a good wife. His wife is compared to a “fruitful vine.” I want to tie two like verses together. They are the only two of their kind.
a) A verse on Wisdom. Proverbs 8:35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
b) A verse on a Wife. Proverbs 18:22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
1) A Godly Wife is a Good Thing! What a joy to walk hand-in-hand in this life with the one that you love, and that God gave to you.
2) A Godly Wife brings the Favor of the Lord. God smiles upon marriage and blesses it.
c) You young men want a good wife? Get wisdom, which is walking with God in fear of the Lord, and God will give you a good wife in the favor of the Lord!
2. The Blessing of Good Children. The bible equates these children to “olive plants.”
a) Olive plants have great Value. For their food and for their oil.
b) Olive plants have great Longevity. There are still olive trees in the garden that Christ frequented 2,000 years ago, and these trees continue to bear fruit.
c) Olive plants are virtually indestructible. Burning, freezing, droughts, and similar conditions may kill the tree above ground, but new trees will grow from the roots.
d) Olive plants are Fruitful. The average yield of olive trees is app. 400 lbs.
e) Olive plants give Health. Olives are an incredibly healthy fruit, packed with antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber.
f) Olive plants are considered sacred. Down to our day, we call peace “Extending an Olive Branch.”
Psalms 127:3-5 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. (4) As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. (5) Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
Conclusion: I believe this Psalm can be summed up in these two verses of the Bible.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: (1) Fear God, and (2) keep his commandments: for this is the (3) whole duty of man. (14) For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
1. Fear God!
2. Walk in His ways!
3. And God will bless!
