2 Samuel 6:1-11; 6:12-23
Introduction:
A. We have preached for a couple of weeks on the life of David: the only man in the Bible that God said was a man after His own heart. When God makes a statement like that, it behooves us to look closely at the character and life of this man that made him so described.
We understand that David was a man of contentment and character which make for attributes of greatness in the sight of the Lord.
B. This morning, I want to look at David in the light of his worship of God. Worship is of the utmost importance in God’s people. Worship is the missing ingredient in the lives of many and is reflected in the lack of biblical worship within the local church. We will never worship publically until we have learned to worship privately.
C. In 2 Samuel 6:1-11, we find David's first attempt at moving the Ark of the Covenant back to the Tabernacle where it belonged. In the story, we find the danger of worldly worship characterized.
1. The Ark was taken captive by the Philistines over 20 years earlier and remained with them for 7 months.
2. God chastened the Philistines, so they made mice and emerods of gold, placed them in the Ark, placed the Ark on a cart pulled by two milk cows, and sent it back to the Israelites.
3. The Ark was placed in the house of Abinadab where it remained for 20 years.
4. In 1 Chronicles, chapter 13, David attempted to bring the Ark back to the Tabernacle by also placing it on a "new cart" that was pulled by oxen with Uzza and Ahio driving.
a) The "new cart" was good enough for the Philistines, so it was deemed good enough for David. Why did David not know? Why did the high priest not know?
b) Because none of them consulted the Word of God given to Moses concerning the movement of the Ark: it was to be covered, the staves placed within the rings, and the priests carrying it upon their shoulders.
5. They were having a real worship service in the eyes of the world: David and all Israel playing instruments with all their might. To the world, Philistines, this was the way to move the Ark. To David and all Israel, it was a wonderful experience. To God, the new cart and oxen were not the way to move His presence. The oxen stumbled and Uzza put forth his hand to stabilize it and God smote him that he died.
1 Chronicles 13:7-11 And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzza and Ahio drave the cart. (8) And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets. (9) And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. (10) And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God. (11) And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perezuzza to this day.
Numbers 4:15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
6. David got angry with God, but the problem was with David. GOD IS NOT IMPRESSED WITH NEW CARTS! God is not impressed with worldly attempts at worship! A lesson in what is not acceptable worship and David's great failure that cost a good man his life.
a) The New Cart of worldliness.
b) The New Cart of contemporary music and praise bands.
c) The New Cart of entertainment. As one great preacher said, "The time will come when preachers quit feeding sheep and begin to entertain goats."
d) The New Cart of shallow preaching.
e) The New Cart of perverted "bibles."
f) The list could go one but we, as God's people, need to cling to the Old Paths wherein is the good way.
Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
7. Sometimes, good men get things wrong but great men correct them and get things right!
D. In 2 Samuel 6:12-23, we find David's second attempt at moving the Ark of the Covenant back to the Tabernacle where it belonged. David now moves the Ark after "due order" and God is pleased. In our text, we find several aspects of David's public worship that we can apply to our lives.
1. David worshipped in Obedience. Verse 12. "So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David"
a. Earlier, David did a right thing the wrong way and it cost him a good man: Uzzah.
b. God is not impressed with "new carts!" Spirit is nothing without truth and truth is always "after the due order." (1 Chronicles 15:13)
John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
c. David sought after the Lord and got it right!
2. David worshipped in Gladness. Verse 12. "with gladness" People no longer enjoy God's house, they just endure it or they ignore it or they forget it.
Psalms 122:1 A Song of degrees of David. I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
Psalms 27:4-5 One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. (5) For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psalms 42:4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
3. David worshipped with Sacrifice. Verse 13, 17. "he sacrificed oxen and fatlings … and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD"
a. Tithes and offerings are an important part of our worship. Impossible to worship God and rob Him at the same time.
Malachi 3:8-10 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. (9) Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. (10) Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
2 Corinthians 9:6-7 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. (7) Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
b. One of the greatest thrills of the Christian life is worshipping in giving.
4. David worshipped with All his Might. Verse 14. "And David danced before the LORD with all his might … leaping and dancing before the LORD"
The King of Israel was actively engaged in worship! As your pastor, I want to be involved in the worship service. I want to sing in the choir.
1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
5. David worshipped with Noise. Verse 15-16. "So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet"
a. Sing with joy.
Psalms 100:1-4 A Psalm of praise. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. (2) Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. (3) Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. (4) Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
b. Sing out loud. I love to sing loud! When I get on the wrong verse or the wrong page, I disrupt the whole crowd.
Psalms 98:4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
6. David worshipped with Blessing. Verse 18, 20. "he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts … Then David returned to bless his household"
a. David wanted to be a blessing to his people. We need to make sure that we are a blessing to our church.
b. I find verse 20 interesting. I had never noticed this. David went home to bless his wife and was met with distain and criticism!
c. Michal, Saul's daughter, would have been much better off blessed than to be cursed in verse 23: "Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death."
7. David worshipped Shamelessly. Verse 20-22. "Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! (21) And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD. (22) And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour."
a. Michal was ashamed of David but David was not intimidated by her criticism.
Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
b. Never be ashamed of the Lord Jesus Christ. Never be ashamed to worship Him.
Conclusion: King David was a man of worship. King David was a man after God's own heart.
