Revelation 5:1-9
Introduction:
A. Chapters 4-5 find the Church raptured out and gathered in heaven with all the saints of God from both Old and New Testaments. What a reunion day that will be.
B. Chapter 6 shows the introduction of Anti-Christ at the beginning of the Tribulation Period. Chapter 6 begins with the word “and” to show that chapters 4-6 are simultaneous events. At the rapture of the Church, we are now in heaven while we find (2 Thessalonians 2) the introduction of “that wicked.”
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, (2) That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. (3) Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; (4) Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. (5) Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? (6) And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. (7) For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (8) And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: (9) Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, (10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: (12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
C. As we worship God and revel is the glories of heaven, the world enters the judgement of God: Jacob’s Trouble or the Tribulation Period.
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
D. We saw the unity of God in the “one sat” upon the throne and God the Father sitting with the Seven Sealed Book in His hand.
E. This is not the closed book that Daniel sealed as the Book of Revelation opened that one for us.
Daniel 12:1-4 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. (2) And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (3) And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. (4) But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase: Here, Daniel is describing a characteristic of the time of the end. Many take this prediction as being fulfilled in both the ability to travel quickly and also the busyness of these last days (run to and fro) and information explosions of the past two centuries (knowledge shall increase) of our modern age.
F. This Seven Sealed Book holds the Seven Seals of the Judgment of God to be opened by the Judge, Jesus Christ, at the beginning of the Tribulation Period of Jacob’s Trouble. This a book that the Father holds in His hand is as old as time.
Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
G. All Judgment is given to Christ.
John 5:22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
2 Timothy 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Two classes of people—quick are the saved, dead are the unsaved—two judgments—Judgment Seat of Christ and the Great White Throne—two appearances—his appearing, the rapture of the church and the Second Coming.
Psalms 50:1-6 A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. (2) Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. (3) Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. (4) He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. (5) Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. (6) And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.
Psalms 96:10-13 Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously. (11) Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. (12) Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice (13) Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.
1. The Scroll. The Seven Sealed Book. The Seven Seals hold the Seven-Fold Judgment of God during the Tribulation Period.
Revelation 5:1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.
Revelation 6:1 And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
With the opening of each of the seven seals, we find a different aspect of the judgment of God on Israel and the occupants of the earth.
2. The Subject of the Book. The judgment of Christ Jesus upon:
a. Those who have rejected the gospel and person of Jesus Christ: His great salvation.
John 3:18-21 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (19) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. (20) For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. (21) But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

b. The Nation of Israel who rejected the Messiah, God’s only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
Revelation 5:1-2 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. (2) And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? (Revelation 6:1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12; 8:1)
John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
Isaiah 53:1-3 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? (2) For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (3) He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Romans 10:16-21 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? (17) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (18) But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. (19) But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you. (20) But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me. (21) But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
Luke 19:41-44 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, (42) Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. (43) For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, (44) And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
Matthew 23:37-39 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! (38) Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. (39) For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
3. The Search – From Adam of the Old Testament to John the Revelator of the New Testament, none was found worthy.
Revelation 5: 3 fcAnd no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.
a. No Person, no Prophet, no Powerful King, no Priest, no Apostle, no Martyr, no one was worthy to judge.
b. Jesus Christ is the righteous judge and the only One who has the right to judge. His judgments will be perfect.
4. The Sadness – This same sadness at the seemingly lack of justice on earth exists today as God’s people ask the question, “How long, O Lord?”
Revelation 5:4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.
a. Dr. R. G. Lee preached the message, “Payday Some Day.” As the old preacher once said, “There is coming a great “recompencing day.”
b. God is keeping score and, at the right time, will perfectly judge both the rejection of the Messiah by Israel along with the rejection of Christ by individuals.
5. The Sovereign – A Lion was expected but a slain Lamb came forth.
Revelation 5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
Jeremiah 30:7-10 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. (8) For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: (9) But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. (10) Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid.
