Provoke Not Your Children To Wrath

Temple Baptist Church - 8-31-2011

Ephesians 6:4

Introduction:

A. The first three verses of this chapter deal with the duties of children in relationship with their parents. They are to obey and honor their parents. Obedience is right and obedience plus honoring bring about a long, blessed life. It takes little observation in our day to find that neither obedience nor respect for parents is found in the average child. When I use the word child, I am not speaking altogether of age for many grownups do not respect or honor their parents.

B. Many children of our day are angry. In the majority of these instances of children not being right with their parents, the parents are at fault. Children today are not raised in a stable home; they are “pawned” off on daycare centers; left for the public schools to train; and sent to church instead of being taken to church if they get to go at all.

C. Children are not being trained to either obey or to honor their parents. Secular Humanism, alternatively known as Humanism (often with a capital H to distinguish it from other forms of humanism), is a secular philosophy that embraces human reason, ethics, and justice, and the search for human fulfillment. It specifically rejects religious dogma, supernaturalism, pseudoscience or superstition as the basis of morality and decision-making. Simply put, man becomes his own god and makes his decision based upon self-gratification.

D. Verse 4 admonishes the FATHER not to provoke his children to wrath. The final authority of the home is to be the father and so the responsibility of the home rests upon his shoulders. Now, a question needs to be answered: “How do we ‘provoke’ our children to wrath?” The answer is found in the same verse: by not nurturing our children spiritually and by not properly admonishing them when they do wrong.

E. We will make this as simple and painless as possible. I want to use Old Testament examples as most references are found there. The New Testament says little on the subject as it deals more with the children of God in the church instead of small children in the home. I will not go in much depth on the subject but want us to realize the importance of accepting the responsibility that goes along with parenthood.

1. Our children must be nourished in the Word of God. As children must receive proper nourishment physically, they must be nourished spiritually. When I was in grade school, we were taught the basic food groups in Health Class. Most of the modern diets used for quick weight loss are “extreme diets.” Low Fat Diets, Low Carb Diets, etc. rely upon depriving the body of essential elements of a well-balanced diet. A well-balanced diet is necessary for good health! The best way to lose weight is moderation. Instead of pushups, pushbacks are needed. Children need balanced diets. Obesity in children is in direct proportion to their lack of balanced meals. Cooking is now based upon speed and convenience instead of thoughtful, loving preparation. Fast Food and fattening snacks produce obese children.

Let us look at a few verses from Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

a. Proper spiritual nourishment begins with the parents. “Shall be in thine heart!” Parents cannot teach their children to love the Lord if they are living lives contrary to the Bible. “Don’t do as I do, do as I say do” produces rebellion in children. When children see mom and dad disobeying the Word of God, they will do worse than the parents. As parents, we must love the Lord with all of our hearts and set forth a proper example for our children to follow.

b. Proper spiritual nourishment comes from diligent spiritual teaching. “Shalt teach them diligently.” In most families, the spiritual teaching is left to the Sunday School teacher or to the pastor. Children are in SS for app. 45 minutes a week and under the pastor’s preaching for 2-3 hours. There are 168 hours in a week so children are under the Word of God for app. 1 ½ percent of their week. Diligent teaching means: “constant in effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything; done or pursued with persevering attention; painstaking.”

c. Proper spiritual nourishment is from sunup to sundown! It is a consistent, constant teaching and application of spiritual truth to our children. It is an unending process that uses every instance, every problem, and every success as an opportunity to teach God’s Word: both in the home and outside of the home.

2. Our children must be admonished and corrected in a biblical manner. Our society, over the past few decades, has frowned on corporal punishment of children. I remember the “old days” when not only the parents spanked children, the public schools did so. I have spent more than my share of time bent over and grabbing my ankles. I did not suffer permanent damage either physically or mentally because of it. Parents today often lose their children to the DSS because of spanking. The bible is clear on the subject and God is right, not Dr. Spock! Admonition is not always chastisement though it may require it.

a. Children must be biblically admonished.

Proverbs 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Proverbs 15:5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 15:31 The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.

b. Children must be biblically corrected.

Proverbs 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. (The word betimes means “early at the task.” The first mention of betimes is found in Genesis 26:31: “And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.” It means that they rose up early at the break of day.)
Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. (Many parents threaten discipline and, by doing so, train their children to be disobedience.)

Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

c. Children must be restored and encouraged! Children need to know that they have our approval and that we are pleased with the things that they do right.

Seven Things We Have In Christ

Temple Baptist Church - 8-28-2011

2 Peter 1:1-4

Introduction:

A. If the world only knew! When we try to win them to Christ, they act as if we are trying to give them a dose of castor oil. If the world only knew the blessings and joy of being saved! In our world, the lost have equated salvation with religion and religion is enough to turn anyone away from Christ. If they would only be saved, then they would know the truth about salvation.

1. In Christ they will have the forgiveness of sins.

2. In Christ they will have the gift of the Holy Ghost.

3. In Christ they will have the peace of God that passeth all understanding.

4. In Christ they will have a life that satisfies.

5. In Christ they will have a conscience that Is pure.

6. In Christ they will have joy unspeakable and full of glory.

B. You can tell them that Jesus loves and died for them; you can tell them that hell is a fearful reality; you can beg and plead and they continue to walk the same road. It is the “broad road” and the “wide gate” where the many of Matthew 7:13-14 walk. It is heart breaking to see so many people that we know reject our wonderful Saviour.

C. Sometimes, we that are saved forget what we have in Christ and take for granted His great salvation. In Hebrews, Paul said, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?” It is truly a “great salvation” and should be cherished by those redeemed from:

1. A Life Of Despair

2. A Life Of Defilement

2. A Life Of Destruction

3. A Life Of Damnation

D. We have so much in Christ but, in our verses for this morning, Peter set forth some wonderful truths concerning our COMMON salvation.

1. We Have A Like Precious Faith – vs. 1a

a. Faith Brings A Relationship With Christ That Is Precious – “precious faith”

1 Peter 2:4-7 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

b. Faith Brings A Fellowship With Saints That Is Common – “like precious faith”

Jude 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

Titus 1:4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

2. We Have An Unquestionable Standing – vs. 1b

a. You May Question My Personal Righteousness - Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

b. You Cannot Question His - 1 Timothy 6:14-16 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

3. We Have The Grace To Endure – vs. 2a

a. Grace That Is Abundant – 1 Corinthians 4:15 For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God.

b. Grace That Is Available - 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

c. Grace That Is Multiplied - 2 Peter 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

d. Grace That Is Sufficient - 2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

4. We Have The Peace To Trust – vs. 2b

a. Peace In The Midst Of The Storm - Mark 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

b. Peace In The Midst Of Sorrow - John 11:21-23 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

c. Peace In The Midst Of Confusion - Philippians 4:6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

5. We Have The Power To Overcome – vs. 3

a. Power To Overcome The World - 1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, [even] our faith.

b. Power To Overcome Evil - Romans 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

c. Power To Overcome Satan - 1 John 2:13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.

6. We Have The Reality Of A Changed Life – vs. 4a

a. A New Life Of Faith - Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

b A New Life Of Holiness - 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

7. We Have The Hope Of Eternal Life – vs. 4b

a. Hell Is Gone – Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

b. Heaven Is A Reality - John 14:2-3 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Wisdom in the Last Days

Temple Baptist Church - 8-28-2011

Daniel 12:1-4

Introduction:

A. The Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation go hand-in-hand. Daniel prophesies concerning the last days while Revelation explains them. Daniel was a sealed book to the Jews because the prophecy was not for them. Daniel is now an open book because we live in the end times.

B. There are several things that Daniel describes in these verses:

1. The Rapture of The Church – vs 1 “thy people shall be delivered…written in the book”

2. The Revelation of Jacob’s Trouble – vs 1 “a time of trouble”

3. The Resurrection of The Saved – vs 2 “some to everlasting life”

4. The Resurrection of The Lost – vs 2 “shame and everlasting contempt”

C. For a few minutes, I want to look at the phrase “And They That Be Wise.” One of the things that I see in our day is a lack of wisdom. You that are a little older have witnessed the death of common sense. People are more educated today than any other generation and, yet, have little or no common or “horse” sense. I use the word educated loosely because what is coming out of the modern school system is “programing” more than “educating.”

D. There is a great difference between spiritual wisdom and the wisdom of this world. God said that His wisdom is foolishness to man and man’s wisdom is foolishness to Him. My definition of spiritual wisdom is found in a verse in James. James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. (This Is Foolishness!) Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it, to him it is wisdom!

E. WISDOM - The right use or exercise of knowledge; the choice of laudable ends, and of the best means to accomplish them. In Scripture theology, wisdom is true religion; godliness; piety; the knowledge and fear of God, and sincere and uniform obedience to his commands. This is the wisdom which is from above. (We need to understand that Wisdom in not Knowledge nor is it Intellect. Wisdom is the right application of knowledge!)

1. There is Wisdom in God’s Word - 2 Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2. There is Wisdom is A Godly Walk - Ephesians 5: 14-17 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

F. What is a spiritually “wise person?” Let us look at just a few verses in the book of wisdom, Proverbs.

1. A Wise Man Will Come To Christ For Salvation – Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

a. It Is Either Everlasting Life Where They Shall Shine (or)

b. It Is Everlasting Shame And Contempt Where They Shall Burn

Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

2. A Wise Man Will Hear The Word Of God – Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

a. The Wise Will Hear God’s Word

b. The Foolish Will Turn A Deaf Ear To God’s Word

3. A Wise Man Will Be Diligent In His Work – Proverbs 10:5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

a. The Provision Of Hard Work

b. The Poverty Of The Slothful

4. A Wise Man Will Obey God’s Word – Proverbs 10:8-9 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall. He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

a. The Obedient Will Walk In Surety And Safety

b. The Disobedient Will Fall And Manifest His Folly

5. A Wise Man Will Be Careful With His Words – Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

“Never leave your tongue in gear when your brain is idling!”

Proverbs 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.

6. A Wise Man Will Win Souls – Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.
Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

Ezekiel 3:18-19 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

7. A Wise Man Will Flee From Sin – Proverbs 14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.

a. The Wise Know The Penalty Of Sin – “feareth”

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death;

b. The Wise Know The Enticement Of Sin – “departeth”

Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. (contrast with)

Proverbs 13:19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

The Duties Of Children

Temple Baptist Church - 8-24-2011

Ephesians 6:1-3

Introduction:

A. As we finish chapter 5 and its relationship to the home, it is fitting that chapter 6 complete the family unit. We looked at the duties of both the wife and the husband and, in this chapter, the Word of God speaks of the responsibility of the children to the parents.

B. One of the signs of the last days, found in 2 Timothy 3, is that of “disobedient to parents.” We certainly live in that day! I have never seen so many children who throw “fits,” openly disobey their parents, etc.

1. It is a parental problem! I did not have the option of disobedying my parents while growing up. As a matter of fact, it did not occur to me because of my upbringing. Not that I was a perfect little angel, but I was raised “old school” by parents who loved me and wanted only the best for me. Spare the rod and spoil the child was the rule of the day and it helped me to grow into a responsible adult.

2. It is a prevalent problem! It is on every hand and overflows into society: public schools, work places, etc. If children will not obey their parents, they will not bow to authority in general.

3. It is a prophetic problem! God “called it” and it is so.

C. Disobedience in youth will cause dishonor in adulthood. When children to not respect and obey their parents while at home, they will dishonor their parents when they come “of age.” Mark it down, the disobedient child will be a dishonoring adult. The will bring shame and reproach to the family as well as the church.

D. Young people, if you have good parents and a stable home life, you need to thank the Lord for it. So many children in our day are raised by family other than parents; day care centers; complete strangers in the person of nannies, etc.; or raised on the streets. Many children do not have their parents living under the same roof and become expendable pawns in a game of Family Court Chess. Their parents could not get along and then took their hatred and frustration out on their mates through the children.

E. Young people, you are blessed if you have a mom and dad sitting together in church tonight. You are blessed if you have a safe, dry bed to sleep in tonight when you get home. You are blessed if you are loved, protected, trained, and provided for! Let me give you a verse tonight. “Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.” (Luke 12:48)

F. Here, we find the first commandment with promise! The promise is both a long life and a full life.

G. As the parents give their lives for their children, so should the children give their lives to their parents. One day you will leave the “nest” and take your place in the world as responsible adults but, until such a day, the closest relationship that you have is with your parents. Having said that, what is the duty of children in the home?

1. Children are to Love their parents. If you love your parents, you will do nothing to hurt them. Making your own decisions as you get older will not hurt your mom and dad if you make right decisions.

Genesis 26:34-35 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: (35) Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Proverbs 17:25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

2. Children are to Obey their parents. The verse says “This is right!” If it is not right then it is wrong. Obedience is to be a right response to commands. Obedience is to be done completely and quietly: without murmuring or complaining. Reluctant obedience dishonors parents; forced obedience dishonors parents; loving obedience honors parents.

Proverbs 6:20-22 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

3. Children are to Honor their parents. The word honour means to fix or place value upon something; to respect or to revere someone. To place in a place of high esteem. Let me ask you a question, young person: “What do your dad and mom mean to you?” Honor them with respect; honor them with gratitude.

Leviticus 19:32 Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

Proverbs 20:20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

4. Children are to Listen to their parents. Young people, your parents have learned much over the years of their lives. They learned from their parents; they learned from life experiences; and they learned by listening to the advice of others. You would do well to listen to dad and mom. It will keep you from making the same mistakes that your parents may have made. God has given parents a special insight into what is best for their children. I often say, “When children are born, the instructions come with them.” Not only hearing the advice that they offer but also asking counsel in times of important decisions. They love you too much to steer you wrong.

Proverbs 1:7-9 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

Conclusion: Now comes the promise. Remember? This is the first command with promise.

a. That it may be well with thee! This means to have a happy life; to have a safe life; and to have a full life. To be blessed!

b. Thou mayest live long on the earth! Not only will God give you a happy life and a full life—He will also give you a long life.

The Why And What Of Baptism

Temple Baptist Church - 8-21-2011

Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Peter 3:18-22

Introduction:

A. There were 2 ordinances given to the local church:

1. The Lord’s Supper – 1 Corinthians 11:23-34

2. Baptism – Matthew 28:18-20

B. Both have been perverted:

1. They have been perverted in their meanings.

a) A method of dispensing grace.

b) Necessary for salvation.

1) Transubstantiation practiced by Roman Catholicism

2) Co-substantiation practiced by some Protestants

2. They have been perverted in their methods.

a) The Lord’s Supper – Real Wine instead of Fruit of the Vine

b) Baptism – Sprinkling, pouring, pedo-baptism

C. 1 Peter gives the true meaning of baptism in verse 20-21.

D. Baptism is a transliterated word - baptizo

1. to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)

2. to cleanse by dipping or submerging

3. to overwhelm

E. The Commandment of Baptism – Obedience Is Required

1. Baptism Is Not Optional

Matthew 3:13-17 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

2. Baptism Is Conditional

a) Must be saved

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

b) Bearing fruit would be good. I leave that up to God though.

Matthew 3:6-8 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

F. The Meaning of Baptism

1. Baptism is Obedience, not Salvation

a) Noah Was Saved Spiritually By Grace – Genesis 6:8

b) Noah Was Saved Physically through His Obedience – 1 Peter 3:20-21

2. Baptism is Identification, not Qualification

a) We are identified with His death, burial and resurrection

b) We are identified with His body, the Church

c) We are identified with His people

d) We are identified with His reproach

G. The Analogy of Baptism

1 Peter 3:20-21 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

A. Baptism is a Confession of Who He is - Lord

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

B. Baptism is An Identification of What Took Place

1. Baptism Identifies Us With A Past That Is Forgiven

Colossians 2:13-14 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

2. Baptism Identifies Us With A Heart That Is Changed

Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fireMr 1:5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Romans 6:4-6 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

3. Baptism Identifies Us With A Future That Is Secure

John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

4. Baptism Identifies Us With A Rejected Saviour (reproach)

Matthew 20:22-23 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

5. Baptism Identifies Us With The Church Of The Living God

Mark 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

6. Baptism Identifies Us With Christ’s Death

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

a. Dead to self - James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

b. Dead to sin - Romans 6:2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

b. Dead to the world - Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

7. Baptism Identifies Us With Christ’s Life

Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Introduction:

A. We have read some of the most profound verses found in the Bible this morning. The Mystery of Godliness is found here.

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

B. Without controversy, this is possibly the greatest mystery of all times. How God became flesh and dwelt among us. We find in these verses the mystery of the ages. How God became man, died on an old rugged cross for the sins of the world, was buried and rose again bodily on the third day for the sinner’s justification. In Calvary, we find the holiness of God; the sinfulness of man; and the greatness of God’s love for such as we are. Hallelujah, what a Saviour!

C. I want to look at this portion of scripture for a few minutes. Here, we find:

1. Prophecy – 52:13-15

Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Genesis 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. (The Old Testament is full of sacrifices which were types and shadows of the death of Christ. Every animal that was sacrificed pointed to the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. For four thousand years mankind looked for the coming of the Messiah. The bible prophesied his coming and it was perfectly fulfilled in the Gospels. He came as He said, He came how He said, and He came when He said!)

2. Person – 53:1-3

Past Glory – vs. 6 John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.

Philippians 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: (He was not an angel nor was he simply a prophet and teacher. He was Jehovah God of eternity past. He was equal with God because He was God!)
Present Condescension – vs. 7-8 John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Almighty God walked among men in the likeness of sinful flesh. He was in the world and the world knew Him not; He came unto His own and His own received Him not. But John said, “WE beheld his glory! I am glad that I know Him this morning.)
Future Exaltation – vs. 9-11 Luke 22:69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. (Today He sits at the right hand of the Father and ever liveth to make intercession for the saints of God.)

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

3. Propitiation – 53:4-9

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (He is not a propitiation but He is THE propitiation! He is not a way to heaven but He is THE way to heaven. He did not die for the elect nor for the select but He died for every man, woman, and child who ever lived or who will ever live. He died for me; He died for you; He died for the sins of the whole world.)

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

1 John 4:14-15 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. (15) Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

4. Pleasing –53:10

Ephesians 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. (He pleased the Father in His incarnation; He pleased the Father in His walk here on earth; He pleased the Father in His death upon Calvary; and His pleasing of the Father is found in His glorious resurrection.)

5. Purpose –53:11

1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. (Because He died for all, there is none too sinful for Him to love. As one man said, “If He saved the ‘chief,’ He can save all of the Indians!” No matter what you have done; no matter who you are; Jesus Christ died for your sins and you can be saved. What a blessing! He came for one reason, to save the world from their sins.)

6. Portion – 53:12

Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (He is exalted above all that is. He is Lord to the glory of God the Father. You do not make Him Lord because He is Lord. One day, in heaven, we will all bow at His wonderful feet and behold the wounds made by the nails for our sins.)

7. Prerogative – 53:1-3

John 1:11-12 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (The choice is ours. Salvation is a free gift that must be accepted. I am glad that I made my choice many years ago and have never regretted coming to Christ. Have you made yours this morning?)

Old Fashioned Bible Preaching

Temple Baptist Church - 8-14-2011

Matthew 4:16-17

Introduction:

A. This morning and possible this evening
(I am not sure at this point just how far I will get in the morning service), I want to look at the relevance of preaching in our day. We live in a day where scholasticism in most seminaries is turning out teachers instead of preachers. We are familiar with 2 Timothy 4:3 which says, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears!” Notice the words “heap to themselves teachers.” Churches are now looking for “speakers” to fill the pulpits instead of preachers.

B. There was a time when young preachers sat under their pastors to learn their doctrine and manner of life! God called men learning from God called men instead of professors.

2 Timothy 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

2 Timothy 1:13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

C. The best teacher that you will ever sit under is the pastor that God gave to you. There you will learn your doctrine correctly. But, the poor old pastor soon became no longer the “best” teacher in the eyes of the people so along came the seminary. The young preachers were systematically taken out of the local churches and placed under men who were “more capable” and “learned” than the men of God in the pulpits.

D. These seminaries were made for just preachers! Seminaries were special schools providing education in theology, religious history, etc., primarily to prepare students for the ministry. They were schools that gave men of God 2-4 years of comprehensive bible teaching to sharpen their “swords” for the task that God had called them to do but the local churches soon became depleted of young preachers and families. Not many years passed before these schools began to take in students who were laymen as well as preachers. This was done in order to give believers a good “bible education” which was actually the work of the pastor in the local church.

E. Slowly but surely, these schools began to expand their outreach to young men and women in preparation for other fields such as education, accounting, pre-med or engineering, etc. As the schools expanded to accommodate these new students, they began to pattern their curriculum to that of the public schools and, thus, the introduction of “Liberal Arts” degrees. I have often maintained that the key word in “Liberal Arts” is liberal! Thus we find the introduction of worldly philosophy into theological seminaries. Their education was good but their theology was not! Theology was mixed with liberal arts and the theology became as “liberal” as the arts!

Romans 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

F. The word Theology is derived from two Greek words: theos, God, and logos, speech or reason. “Theology is the science of God and of the relations between God and the universe.” Theology is the “science of things divine.” Theology is a reasoned discourse or treatise about God. As a term, theology has both a narrow and a broad use:

1. In its narrow use, theology means the doctrine of God, His being and works.

2. In its broad use, theology means the sum of Christian doctrines.

G. Theology has a threefold ground:

1. In the existence of a God who has relations to the universe.

2. In the capacity of the human mind for knowing God and certain of these relations.

3. In the provision of means by which God is brought into actual contact with the mind, or, in other words, in the provision of revelation.

H. Since preaching has never been popular among the masses, the masses—who desire to have a form of religion that is both pleasing to them and supposedly appeasing to a holy God—have chosen teachers to fill their pulpits instead of preachers. GOD ORDAINED PREACHERS for that purpose! Intellectualism produces teachers and not preachers and teaching is a last day phenomena. Paul said that he was not sent to preach with eloquence and oratory.

1 Corinthians 2:4-5 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Scholastically, the Apostle Paul was certainly qualified to give an intellectual dissertation, but he chose the simplicity of the old gospel story to get the work done.

I. Because of this modern “phenomena” of teaching, we see:

a. An Increase In Carnality In The Church – Preaching exposes sin and a lack of preaching increases carnality among believers.

b. A Decrease In Conversions In the Communities – God chose the foolishness of preaching to save the lost so, if there is not preaching, there will be fewer true conversions.

c. An Increase In Apostasy In The Church – Teaching has become a “smoke screen” for the intellectual and a breeding place for false doctrine.

J. I want to look at the importance of bible preaching in our church and also for the salvation of sinners.

The Importance Of Preaching To The Sinner

1. Preaching Gives the Sinner a Basis for Faith - 1 Corinthians 1:17-25 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

a. Biblical Preaching Is Practical – “of none effect”

b. Biblical Preaching Is Powerful – “the power of God”

c. Biblical Preaching Is Pleasing – “it pleased God”

2. Preaching Pierces The Sinner’s Soul - Acts 2:36-37 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

3. Preaching Saves The Sinner’s Soul - Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The Importance Of Preaching To The Saint

1. Preaching Keeps The Saint Pure - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (Reprove means to “bring to light” or to convict. Rebuke means to “censure” or to “pass sentence.”)
a. It Is To Be Done Sharply - Titus 1:13 This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

b. It Is To Be Done Authoritatively - Titus 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
c. It Is To Be Done Lovingly - 2 Timothy 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2. Preaching Encourages The Saint - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

3. Preaching Brings Joy To The Saint - Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor (Joy because it saves); he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted (Joy because it comforts), to preach deliverance to the captives (Joy because it delivers), and recovering of sight to the blind (Joy because it restores sight) , to set at liberty them that are bruised (Joy because it sets free)

4. Preaching Gives Understanding To The Saint - 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. (Preaching helps us to handle problems right in the light of God’s Word!)

5. Preaching Gives Hope To The Saint - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

1. So, here is the question that needs to be asked, “Is old fashioned bible preaching relevant in our day?” Of course you and I know that it is but most people will not stand for straight preaching or sound doctrine.

a. We must Allow Biblical Preaching - Hebrews 13:22 And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.

b. We must Pray for Biblical Preaching - 2 Thessalonians 3:18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. The second epistle to the Thessalonians was written from Athens.

c. We must Receive Biblical Preaching - 1 Thessalonians 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

d. We must Apply Biblical Preaching - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2. What kind of preaching does the church need?

a. The Church Needs Need Bold Preaching - Ephesians 6:19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, (Men of God who are not afraid to preach the Word of God to the people of God!)
Isaiah 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

Jeremiah 1:6-8 Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

b. The Church Needs Broad Preaching - Acts 20:26-27 Therefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God. (Reproving, rebuking, and exhorting! Most churches leave the first two out in order to produce a “positive” reaction among their people. Thus the churches become more worldly and spiritually anemic.)

c. The Church Needs Spirit Filled, Powerful Preaching - 1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

d. The Church Needs Biblical Preaching - 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (Preach the word! We are not politicians nor are we a political party; we are a church. Our work is the work of the gospel.)

e. The Church Needs Compassionate Preaching - Jude 22-23 And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. (Preaching is to be straight, not mean spirited. Men of God are not to be “brawlers” nor are they to “strive” with the people.)

2 Timothy 2:24-26 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

Love One Another

Temple Baptist Church - 8-7-2011

Romans 13:8-10

Introduction:

A. Churches are known for several things:

1. There are great soul winning churches. (I want this church to be one for the souls of men!)

2. There are great missions churches. (I want this church to be one for God’s glory!)

3. There are great preaching churches. (I want to be a great preacher for my people!)

4. There are great loving churches. (I want this church to be one!)

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

B. Of all of the gifts given to the church, the greatest is that of brotherly love. No bickering, no fighting, no hurt feelings, no clicks, no murmuring and complaining, no gossiping, no backbiting, just loving one another in the Lord and getting the job done for the Lord.

1. Christian Love Is Given At The Moment Of Salvation - Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

2. Christian Love Is One Of The Most Visual Signs Of Salvation - John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

3. Christian Love Is A Sign Of Knowing God (many saved do not know God!) - 1 John 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Philippians 3:9-10 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know (present tense—at the end of Paul’s life) whom I have believed (Past tense—on the Damascus Road), and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

C. Christian Live Is A Sign Of Abiding In Christ – 1 John 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

1. We Are To Love Our Neighbor As Ourselves (The Bible calls this the Royal Law) - James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:your Neighbor Can Be Either Saved Or Lost!

Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Luke 10:29, 33, 36 But he, willing to justify himself (Jewish Lawyer), said unto Jesus, And (shows an attitude) who is my neighbour? . . . But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him . . . Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

a. Your Neighbor Is A Person Of Any Religion

b. Your Neighbor Is A Person Of Any Race

c. Your Neighbor Is A Person Of Any Region

2. We Are To Love One Another As Ourselves

a. This Love Is Expressed In Unity –2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

1 Timothy 5:1-2 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

John 13:33-35 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

b. This Love Is An Expression Of Service - Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

c. This Love Is An Expression Of Purity – 1 Peter 1:22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:

1 John 3:11-19 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

d. This Love Is Expressed In Forgiveness – 1 Peter 3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Introduction
: Things We Have In Christ

A. We Studied Kedesh – Holiness

B. We Studied Shechem – Shoulder

C. We Studied Hebron – Fellowship

D. We Studied Bezer – Fortress

E. We Studied Ramoth – Heights

F. This Morning We Will Study Golan – “rejoicing”

THE LOST FIND THEIR HAPPINESS IN WORLDLY THINGS:

John 16:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

Job 20:5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

THE SAVED FIND THEIR HAPPINESS IN HEAVENLY THINGS

Hebrews 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.

Colossians 3:1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. (2) Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF A CHILD OF GOD LOSING THEIR JOY - John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

a. Loss of Joy Through Sinfulness - Psalms 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

b. Loss of Joy Through Sorrow - 1 Peter 1:5-6 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:

SOME THINGS THE SAVED REJOICE IN:

1. The Saved Rejoice In Their Saviour

a. The Joy Of His Person - 1 Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

b. The Joy Of His Presence - Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

c. The Joy Of His Protection - Psalms 5:11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

d. The Joy Of His Provision - Nehemiah 8:10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

2. The Saved Rejoice In Their Salvation

a. It Is A Purposed Rejoicing - Habakkuk 3:18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

b. It Is A Productive Rejoicing - Psalms 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

1) The Reality of Our Salvation Makes Us Rejoice - Psalms 21:1 The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!

2) The Restoration of Fellowship Makes Us Rejoice - Psalms 51:12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

3. The Saved Rejoice In Their Scripture

Nehemiah 8:12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

4. The Saved Rejoice In Their Service

a. The Price of Service - Philippians 2:17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.

b. The Prize of Service - Matthew 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

5. The Saved Rejoice In Their Suffering

a. We Are Persecuted For Christ - Luke 6:22-23 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

b. We Are Partakers With Christ - 1 Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

6. The Saved Rejoice In Their Security
