A Proper Attitude Toward Chastening

 Temple Baptist Church - 9-25-2022

Psalm 6

Introduction.  As we go through the Book of Psalms, often I will give the biblical interpretation and then a practical application.

A.  I am not sure what the historical interpretation of this Psalm is, but we do know that the author was King David.

B.  From the first two verses of Psalm 6, we also see that the subject is the chastening of the LORD and David’s submission to it.

C.  David’s Plea – verses 1.  David pleads for God’s mercy in love instead of judgment in anger.

D.  David’s Predicament – verses 2-5.

1.  Verse 2.  David’s Physical Condition.  Possibly through fasting or sickness caused by sinfulness.

2.  Verse 3-4.  David’s Spiritual Condition.  Lacking the peace and presence of the LORD.

3.  Verse 5.  David’s Possible Condition.  David knew that the chastening of the LORD could bring death if not repented of and there be a change of lifestyle or spiritual condition.

1 Corinthians 11:28-32  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.  (29)  For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.  (30)  For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.  (31)  For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.  (32)  But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

E.  David’s Penitence.  Verse 6.  Loss of sleep and anguish of soul brought about the relief that was to be found only in the LORD.

F.  David’s Price.  Verses 7-8.  As king, most of David’s chastisement came in the form of his enemies, which were many, being given the power to get the upper hand.

G.  David’s Peace.  Verses 8-10.  The LORD heard, the LORD received, and the enemies conquered.

H.  Here is the application.  I do not know why David suffered as he did nor how long it took him to get to verses 8-10.  Two possibilities:

1.  Immediate confession and repentance.  Sometimes, the key to chastening is simple: just ask the Lord’s forgiveness and there is no lingering penalty attached to it.  This what we are more used to as, when we sin, we confess it to the Lord, forsake it, and cleansing and righteousness are instantly available.

1 Thessalonians 5:22-23  Abstain from all appearance of evil.  (23)  And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 John 1:9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

2.  Lack of confession and repentance.  At other times, chastening and return to the LORD become more complicated because of continuance.  With David, this was one of those times as he cries out to the LORD but is in a terrible condition because of his sin.

Proverbs 3:11-12  My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:  (12)  For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Hebrews 12:5-9  And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:  (6)  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.  (7)  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?  (8)  But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.  (9)  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

a.  Recognition of sinfulness.

b.  Repentance from sinfulness.

Proverbs 28:13  He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Remind Me, Dear Lord - Part 6 - Our Great Obligation

Temple Baptist Church - 9-25-2022

1 Peter 1:9-16

Introduction:

A.  We have been looking at Peter’s encouragement to the “strangers scattered” who suffered greatly.  As in the Book of Job, the Holy Ghost did not explain the “why” of suffering.  He introduced Job to the “how” of suffering.

B.  God never asked us to understand these things but admonished us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and to lean not unto our understanding.  Peter, through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, reminded these suffering believers of some things that would hold them when the storms of life come.

C.  He reminded them of:

Our Great Salvation – verses 1-5

Our Great Inheritance – Verses 3-5

Our Great Trials – Verses 3-11

Our Great Love – Verses 3-8

D.  In light of all these things, I want to look at ‘Our Great Obligation.”

1.  We rejoice in our great salvation that was purchased with such great price.  I am glad that I know the One who died at Calvary!  I am glad that I have eternal life through a finished work!

2.  But, along with so great salvation comes great obligations.  We were created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath foreordained that we should walk in them.  We are new creatures with a new life in Christ.  Old things have passed away and, behold, all things are become new.

E.  Verse 13 begins with the word “WHEREFORE!”  In verses 13-16, we find that we also have a great obligation.

1.  During great trials, we tend to forget that we owe the Lord, we still need to continue to do right.  There is a path to follow and a work to be done.

2.  During the good times, we tend to relish the goodness of God and “bask in the sunshine.”  We still have an obligation to the One who loves us and we love!

F.  Our Obligations:

1.  We have an obligation to be strong in the Lord – vs. 13  “grid up”  (It means to “tuck in a garment” in preparation for a race.)

Joshua 24:15  And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

Ephesians 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

2.  We have an obligation to be sober minded – vs. 13  “be sober”  (It means to be serious; Satan is!)

1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1 Thessalonians 5:6  Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

1 Peter 4:7  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

3.  We have an obligation to be steadfast in our walk – vs. 13  “hope to the end”  (It means not to quit or to be double minded!)

1 Corinthians 15:58  Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

2 Peter 3:17  Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Hebrews 12:3  For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

4.  We have an obligation to be submissive to the Lord – vs. 14  “As obedient children”  (Children are to obey their parents – Ephesians 6:1!)

Ephesians 4:1  I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

1 Peter 1:2  Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

5.  We have an obligation to be separate from the world – vs. 14  “not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance”

2 Corinthians 6:17  Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,  (Ecclesiastical separation)

Romans 16:17  Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.  (Doctrinal separation)

Hebrews 7:26  For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;  (Personal separation)

Romans 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

6.  We have an obligation to be serious about sin – vs. 15  “so be ye holy”

2 Thessalonians 1:10-12  When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.  Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:  That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

7.  We have an obligation to be safe from judgment – vs. 16  “for I am holy”

1 Peter 4:17  For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Galatians 6:7  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Behold The Lamb

 Temple Baptist Church - 9-21-2022

John 1:19-29

Introduction:

A.  Last week, the religious crowd was introduced to “The voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

1.  I am sure that I would also have been more than a little curious too.  It has been 400 years since the Lord had spoken verbally, by a prophet, a dream, a vision, or a sign.  Religion had flourished and the Pharisees and Sadducees were in control.  Religion was prospering and everyone seemed to be satisfied with it.

2.  Out of the desert comes a man dressed in camel’s hair, eating honey and locusts while crying out to anyone who would stop and hear.  They met the greatest prophet born of woman, John the Baptist.  The forerunner of the Messiah; the spirit of Elias.

B.  John the Baptist introduced himself as “the voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

C.  When John spoke this, the Messiah of Israel and Propitiation for the sins of whole world had not been revealed.  John knew of Him, but John did not know Him.

1.  By know Him, we understand that John had spent his entire life knowing Him.  John was 6 months older than our Lord and what we would refer to as a second cousin.  They no doubt were well acquainted and played together in their youth.

2.  John knew the young Jesus as a normal child, though without sin, in His humanity He was a normal child who loved to run and play with others.  One His mother’s side, Jesus was 100% human.

D.  In verse 29, John for the first time knew who the Messiah was as it pointed out to Him by God.

E.  In his introduction of Israel’s Messiah, John the Baptist introduced Him as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world:” the sacrifice that would be the Propitiation for the sin of the world.

F.  “Behold the Lamb.”  Who was this Lamb that John presented?

1.  Christ us was the Sovereign Son of God.   John 1:14-16  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  (15)  John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.  (16)  And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.  (Jehovah God, the Creator of all things, the Eternal Word of God, the only begotten of the Father—full of grace and truth.)

2.  Christ was the Sinless Saviour.  2 Corinthians 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.  (People accuse our Lord Jesus Christ of sinfulness without even know what they are doing.  He is the sinless, immaculate, immutable Lord Jesus Christ.  I, with Pilate, find no fault in Him at all.)

3.  Christ was the Sinner’s Sacrifice.  Isaiah 53:4-6  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  (5)  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  (6)  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  (I thank God that the Lord Jesus Christ died for me.  I am glad that the Lord Jesus Christ died for you.  I am glad that the Lord Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world.  No Calvinism found here.  Only the everlasting love of God for sinners.)

4.  Christ was the Saint’s Substitute.  1 John 2:1-2  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:  (2)  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.  (The Lord Jesus Christ took MY place!  I should have died in my sins and perished forever from the Lamb in the Lake of Fire.  Hallelujah, what a Saviour!)

5.  Christ was and is our Sufficiency.  Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.  (No task too daunting, no work too difficult, no mountain too high, and no valley too low.  I can do all things through Christ.  Where He leads, He guides.  Where He leads, He provides.)

6.  Christ will be the Splendor of our Eternity.  Revelation 22:3-5  And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:  (4)  And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.  (5)  And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.  (Israel was introduced by John the Baptist as their long-awaited Messiah and they rejected Him.  The sinner was introduced by John the Baptist to their Saviour and the choice remains theirs!)

Remind Me, Dear Lord - Part 5 - Our Great Love

Temple Baptist Church - 9-18-2022

1 Peter 1:3-8

Introduction:

A.  This morning, I want to look at something that we should not have to be reminded of, yet Peter reminded the “strangers scattered.”  Our great love for our wonderful, loving, compassionate Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and His even greater love for His children.

B.  Too often during the midst of hard times, we forget some things, and this unfortunately is one of them.  We get so surrounded our trials, troubles, disappointments, and discouragements that these things gender a self-pity that causes us to doubt God’s great love for us and our great love for Him.

C.  These “strangers scattered” were no different than us.  There will be times when God’s children need to be re-assured of God’s unchangeable, eternal love for them and then reaffirm our undying love for Him.

D.  It is amazing that we, as God’s children, can so love One whom we have never seen with the physical eye. No man on earth has seen Jesus Christ since John was given the Revelation of Jesus Christ on the Ilse of Patmos in app. 90-95 AD.

E.  Our love for Christ is a love that the world knows nothing about.  It is a love that only the child of God can know.

Ephesians 3:17-19  That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,  (18)  May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;  (19)  And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

F.  All God’s children love Him but there are still degrees of the love for Christ.

1 Corinthians 16:22  If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha.

Luke 7:47  Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

G.  As Jesus Christ paid a terrible price because He so loved, these displaced, scattered Jews also paid a terrible price for their love of Christ.

1.  It is a Reciprocal Love.  Song of Solomon 2:16  My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.

1 John 4:19  We love him, because he first loved us.

2.  It is Separating Love.  Matthew 10:37  He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

3.  It is an Obedient Love.  John 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

4.  It is a Constraining Love.  2 Corinthians 5:14-15  For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:  (15)  And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

H.  Though this love that these “strangers scattered” was a “faceless” love (having not seen), it was not a “baseless” love!  The first 9 verses show the basis of this great love that God’s children have for the Lord Jesus Christ.

1.  We Love Him For His Great Salvation – vs. 3

2.  We Love Him For His Marvelous Grace – vs. 2

3.  We Love Him For His Glorious Peace – vs. 2

4.  We Love Him For His Wonderful Prospect – vs. 4

5.  We Love Him For His Blessed Assurance – vs. 5

6.  We Love Him For His Infinite Wisdom – vs. 6-7

7.  We Love Him For His Unspeakable Joy – vs. 8

8.  We Love Him For His Promised Eternity – vs. 9

Conclusion:  It is in our difficult times that we find Christ’s great love.  It is Christ’s great love that precipitates our great love for Him.

1 John 4:19  We love him, because he first loved us.

The Voice of One Crying in the Wilderness

 Temple Baptist Church - 9-14-2022

John 1:6-23

Introduction:

A.  I believe that God’s people understand the times in which we live.  I am not necessarily talking about the wickedness, etc., but rather the “hour” in which we live.  Preachers have been fervently preaching about the coming of the Lord for years.

B.  We understand from the Bible that God allotted 7 thousand years of time from the beginning until eternity begins.  There were 4 thousand years until the coming of Jesus Christ which is 4 days in God’s time.  There have been 2 thousand years since Jesus Christ which is 2 days in God’s time.  There will be a one-thousand-year Kingdom Age which is 1 day in God’s time.  That shows me that we are at the end of the 6th day and the Rapture is eminent.

C.  There were 400 “silent years” from Malachi to Matthew leading up to the First Advent.  There have been 400 “silent years” since the translation of the King James Bible leading up to the Second Advent.  The Bible also says that Israel will “sleep” for 2 days or 2 thousand years and that God would raise them up to walk in His sight which is the Millennial Reign of Christ.

D.  Malachi prophesied of the coming of the “spirit of Elijah” just prior to the First Advent and it was fulfilled in John the Baptist in these verses that we read.  I believe that there will also be such a “spirit” just prior to the Second Advent.  God has always had His voice and it is being heard today.

E.  I have several Old and New Testament heroes that stand out to me personally with John the Baptist being one of them.  John was not acceptable in his day as far as his person.

1.  John was a man who was prophesied.  To fore-tell what is to be given.  Isaiah 40:3  The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

2.  John was a man who prophesied.  To forth-tell what is given.  Matthew 3:3  For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

3.  John had a miracle birth.  His mother was called “barren.”  Luke 1:36  And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

4.  John had a special calling.  He was filled with the Holy Ghost from the womb.  Luke 1:15  For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

5.  John was martyred.  John was faithful until his death.  John never flinched nor capitulated. Matthew 14:8  And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

6.  John was not Charismatic – John did not miracles.  He was a preacher, not a performer!  John 10:41  And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.

7.  John was not Social – John lived in the wilderness.  He ate locust and wild honey.  He was a preacher, and he was not popular but was popular with God!  Matthew 3:3-4  For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  (4)  And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

8.  John was not Elegant – John dressed in leather and camel’s hair.  He was a plain man!  Matthew 3:4  And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

9.  John was not Popular – John did not compromise the message.  He was a preacher, not a man pleaser!  Matthew 3:7-8  But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  (8)  Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

10.– John was fearless.  He rebuked Herod.  Mark 6:17-18  For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife: for he had married her.  (18)  For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife.

F.  Not only is he a hero of mine, but he was highly regarded by our Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 11:7-15  And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 8  But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9  But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. 10  For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 11  Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12  And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. 13  For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14  And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. 15  He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

G.  We live in a day of “plastics,” but John was REAL!  He was the “real deal” of that day and the Lord used him to prepare the way for our Lord Jesus Christ.

H.  I believe that the “spirit of Elijah” is still evident in these last days just prior to the Second Advent.  I want to be a part of that voice!  I want you to be a part of that voice!

1.  It Was The Voice!  Not a voice but THE voice.  There are a lot of voices clamoring for our attention in these last days.  A myriad of voices crying out with different messages.

Matthew 24:5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Matthew 24:11  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

I have never seen as many “churches” springing up as we have today.  There are little signs everywhere in front of home with the names of their ministries on them.  Denominations galore can be found, especially here in the “Bible Belt.”  Someone asked me one day, “How do I know which one is right?”  We want to be God’s Voice, speaking from God’s Word.  In order to be to be God’s Voice, you must have the right message and our message is right.  We are the Voice of God in these last days.

2.  It Was The Voice Of One!  We are not the only ones who are “holding the ropes” in these last days.  Those who preach the right message are one voice with many messengers.

1 Kings 19:14  And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.  (Elijah thought that he was the only one standing but the Lord had others.  I do not know where they were when Elijah went to Mt. Carmel but they were where God wanted them.)

1 Kings 19:18  Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

I thank the Lord that there are men of God who still stand in the “Old Paths.”  These are men who, though they may be scattered around the world, still preach from the right Bible.  They are God’s Voice, and their Voice is ONE with ours.

3.  It Was The Voice Of One Crying!  It is to be a distinct cry.  It is to be a loud cry.  It is to be a persistent cry.

Isaiah 58:1  Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

It is so easy to get discouraged in the way and, in so doing, our voices become quieter and less persistent.  The numbers are not our business, they are God’s.  Our work is to continuing to cry loudly in these last days.  Someone will hear and heed!  It is a cry of urgency; a cry of compassion; a cry of salvation.  Cry aloud and lift up your voices.

4.  It Was A Voice In The Wilderness!  A wilderness is a dry place where there is little water.  A wilderness is a non-productive place of little value.  There is little water of the Word being preached as the gospel has become a social one; the message of salvation has been compromised; the Word of God has been hidden among the hundreds of new versions; sin has become popular while holiness has become old fashioned and rejected.  Atheism and agnosticism have arisen from the roots of secular humanism.

Amos 8:11-12  Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:  (12)  And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

Zechariah 7:8-14  And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying,  (9)  Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:  (10)  And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.  (11)  But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.  (12)  Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.  (13)  Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:  (14)  But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

We live in a time when people refuse to hear the Word of the Lord.  Their hearts have been hardened through sinfulness.  So many people have become reprobate at early ages.  This world has such a pull and Satan has blinded the minds of the people to the things of God.

5.  It Was The Voice Of The Straight Way!

Matthew 7:14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Proverbs 16:25  There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

2 Timothy 4:3-4  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;  (4)  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Zechariah 7:11-13  But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.  (12)  Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.  (13)  Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:

In John’s day, God’s way was a singular way; God’s way was a narrow way; God’s way was not the popular or easy way; but it was still God’s Way?  It was God’s Way and the Only Way to Heaven!

Nothing has changed.  The voice is still of one crying in the wildeness.

Conclusion:  In the 400 Silent Years, Phariseeism became the rule of the day with salvation becoming of works and not of grace! We have the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth!  We are the “voice of one crying in the wilderness” saying, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”
