Theology: The Doctrine of God - Part 6

 Temple Baptist Church - 3-30-2025

Genesis 1:1

II.  The Attributes of God

  “The Omnipotence of God”

Introduction:

A.  Genesis 1:1 is the greatest verse in the Bible, and its declaration of God is the most profound theological statement found in Scripture. This morning, we will discuss another of God's attributes: Omnipotence. The term "Omnipotence" literally means all-powerful. Since God is infinite and possesses power, He possesses infinite power.

Revelation 19:6  And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth

1.  God reigns with absolute power.  No power in heaven (Lucifer) or on earth (Babel) can challenge His supreme authority!

2. When we think of God’s infinite power, we naturally think of His creative acts. What wisdom and power are found in the first few words of Genesis 1:1: “God created!” This reminds me of the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. If I were to construct that magnificent home by myself, it would be an impossible task! The granite and stones, the steel and framework, the land clearing and foundation, the ornate finishing work. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

3. God spoke, and it was done—the heavens in their immensity, the earth and its fullness, all completed in absolute perfection in a moment of time. Power that is unimaginable, infinite power, power that has no limitations, the omnipotence of Almighty God!

Psalms 33:6-9  By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.  (7)  He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.  (8)  Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.  (9)  For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

B.  The Totality of God's Power.  It was infinite in the Word of creation. God possessed both the omniscience to know how and what to create, and the omnipotence to execute His creation.

1.  God did not need to exert physical effort; His word alone was sufficient for the greatest display of power known to humanity. The Latin phrase "ex nihilo," meaning "out of nothing," is frequently associated with the concept of creation, emphasizing the act of bringing forth existence from nothing. God stood in the void, with nothing in His hand, and proclaimed, "Let there be!"

Genesis 1:1-3  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.  (2)  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.  (3)  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

2.  If nothing else were to be said about the infinite power of God, Genesis 1:1 would suffice.

C.  The Emphasis of God’s Power

1.  The Possession of God’s Power.  If God said it once, that was enough, but here we find it twice.

Psalms 62:11  God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

2.  The Preservation of God’s Power.  The word “belongeth” shows present perfect and continuance tense.  God’s power remains present and constant.

3.  The Person of God’s Power.

Matthew 28:18  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

D.  The Scope of God’s Power.  God can do anything, everything, everywhere, and in every circumstance!  There are no limitations to God’s Power.

Genesis 18:14  Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Jeremiah 32:17  Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:

Luke 1:37  For with God nothing shall be impossible.

E.  The Distribution of God’s Power.  This is possibly the most important aspect of God’s infinite power.  If God’s power was limited to His creation alone, it would avail nothing to His children.

Isaiah 45:11-12  Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.  (12)  I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

Ephesians 3:20  Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

1.  God’s power is personally available.

Psalms 62:11  God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

Power belongs to God. Therefore, he can delegate it to whom He pleases.

Matthew 28:18-19a  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore!

2.  God’s power is perfectly sufficient.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.  (10)  Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

F.  The Diversity of God’s Power.

Isaiah 26:3-4  Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.  (4)  Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

1.  God’s Power can Save the Lost.  No sinner too vile.  No heart too hard.  No life too far gone.  The vilest sinner made whiter than snow.

1 Timothy 2:4  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

2.  God’s Power can Secure the Saved.  Eternal life is given, and heaven is prepared.

John 10:28  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

3.  God’s Power can Succor the Tempted.  Tempted, heavy laden, come to Christ and He will give you rest!

1 Corinthians 10:13  There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

4.  God’s Power can Supply the Needy.

Philippians 4:19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

5.  God’s Power can Sustain the Weak.

2 Corinthians 12:9  And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

6.  God’s Power can Strengthen the Weary.

Isaiah 40:31  But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

7.  God’s Power can Subdue our Fears.

Psalms 34:4  I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

8.  God’s Power can Satisfy our Longings.

Isaiah 58:11  And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

What do you need?  God said, “Concerning the work of my hands command ye me!”
