The Travesty of Church Division

 Temple Baptist Church - 3-19-2025

1 Corinthians 1:10-16

Introduction:

A.  The Corinthian Church was a newly established and recently converted fledgling congregation. They were saved and sanctified; however, they remained carnal and worldly at heart.  They were actually arguing with each other about who they followed or needed to follow!

B.  An old saying goes like this:  “Anything with two heads is a freak and will normally die!”  In chapter 11, Paul encouraged these young believers to follow him as he followed Christ.  This is still the pattern of God’s leadership in our day.  You follow me as I follow Christ, and we will be fine!

1 Corinthians 11:1  Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

C. We would think that unity would be easy to achieve in the local church, but it takes hard work and much love.

1 Peter 4:7-8  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.  (8)  And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

D.  Church Division Comes Through Carnality.  I call division the Pastor’s Nightmare!  I have often said that the greatest enemy of the local church sits upon its pews.  United, we STAND!  Divided we FALL!

Matthew 12:25  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

James 3:16  For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

1 Corinthians 14:33  For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

E.  Church Division Comes Through Biblical Ignorance.

2 Corinthians 2:10-11  To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;  (11)  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

Ephesians 4:2-7   With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;  Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.  There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;  One Lord, one faith, one baptism,  One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.  But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Endeavour - Endeavour can be both a noun and a verb. As a noun, it refers to an attempt to do something, especially something new or difficult. As a verb, it means to try very hard to do something: try hard to do or achieve something:

Endeavouring is the present work going forth - to use speed, that is, to make effortbe prompt or earnest: - do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study.

Endeavour comes from a root word to hasten or make haste!

F.  Church Division Comes Through False Brethren.

3 John 9-11   I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.  Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.  Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

G.  Church Division Comes Through Satanic Influence.

2 Corinthians 2:10-11  To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

1.  The Division Brought Reproach On The Name Of Christ – “by the name”

a.  The Son Bears The Father’s Name - Philippians 2:9-10  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

1)  A Good Name Is A Thing Of Great Pride - Proverbs 22:1   A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2)  A Good Name Is A Thing Of Great Preciousness - Ecclesiastes 7:1   A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

b.  The Son Can Shame The Father’s Name - 2 Samuel 12:14  Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Ephesians 4:1   I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

1 Timothy 5:14  I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

2.  The Division Brought Confusion In The Local Body – “among you”

Matthew 12:25-26  And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:  And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

3.  The Division Brought Confusion Of The Church’s Purpose  - “same mind”

2 Corinthians 13:11   Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

A.  Always Give Others The Benefit Of The Doubt - 1 Corinthians 13:5  Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

B.  Learn To Forgive And To Forget - Ephesians 4:31-32  Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:  And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

C.  Keep Your Eye Focused Upon The Purpose - Philippians 1:27   Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

Philippians 3:16  Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.

D.  Esteem Others Better Than Self - Philippians 2:3  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Philippians 2:1-4   If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,  Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

E.  Learn To Keep Your Mouth Shut When There Is A Problem - Proverbs 6:16-19  These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:  A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,  An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,  A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
