The Resurrection

 Temple Baptist Church - 9-8-2024

Psalm 22:22-31

Introduction:

A.  Last week, we saw our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross.  Our view of these verses gave us insight to the spiritual suffering of our Lord at Calvary.  We are used to hearing the physical suffering of the Cross, but Psalm 22 gives us the spiritual view.

B.  Almighty Jehovah God, Jesus Christ, took our sin and shame upon Himself as He became “sin for us” who knew no sin.

1.  “He became sin for us!  Amazing love, how can it be, that Thou my God shouldest die for me!  That God would become the sin that He hated so much and take the shame brought about by the sinner, is the most amazing act that God ever did.

2.  “He became sin for us” was so much greater than the creation as He created in perfection and purity: “and, behold, it was very good!”

3.  “He became sin for us” so much greater that all the miracles He performed before and after His birth as He performed them as Master and LORD.

C.  The work of the Cross is now finished as we get to the end of the first 21 verses of Psalm 22.  For three days and nights, His body lay in the grave while He descended into the bowels of the earth, Abraham’s Bosom, and preached to those who awaited the coming day of resurrection.

1.   The body of the Lord Jesus Christ has been placed in a tomb where no man ever laid.  It was a borrowed tomb that belonged to Joseph of Arimathea.

2.  The Jews have placed guards to keep the disciples of Jesus from “stealing” His body.

3.  The disciples of the Lord have stayed away, and the silence of death is deafening.

4.  Very early on the third day, the Ladies come to the Garden Tomb and find it empty with angels telling them that He is not here, He is risen as He said.

D.  In verses 21-31, we find His glorious resurrection and the work that followed. The sorrow of the cross and death is now transposed into a song of victory and triumph.  The silence of death is deafening!

E.  The Resurrection, the Capstone of Christianity, has taken place in the dark hours of early morn.

Romans 10:9-10  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  (10)  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

1.  There is the glory of life anew in the Resurrection.

3.  A Tree gives way to a Throne.

4.  A Cross gives way to a Crown.

F.  The past Prophet becomes the present Priest and future King.

1.  The Power.  Verse 22 – Declared to be the Son of God with power by the Resurrection from the dead.

2.  The Priest.  Obligation of the Resurrection – Verses 22-26

3.  The Prince – Verses 27-31.  King of kings and Lord of lords.

G.  Our glorious Resurrection:

John 14:19  Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

Romans 6:9  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

Philippians 3:10-11  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;  (11)  If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

H.  Our glorious Resurrection will be:

1.  A Resurrection of Life.  John 5:24-29  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.  (25)  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.  (26)  For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;  (27)  And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.  (28)  Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,  (29)  And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.  (I thank God that I will live eternally and that eternity will be with my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.  “I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also!”)

2.  A Resurrection of Hope - John 11:21-27  Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.  (22)  But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.  (23)  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  (24)  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.  (25)  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  (26)  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?  (27)  She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.  (A blessed hope in this life and glorious life in the next life!)

Titus 2:13  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

3.  A Resurrection of Holiness - Romans 1:4  And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: (No more sin, no more shame, no more sorrow, no more sadness!)

Romans 6:5  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

4.  A Resurrection of Immortality - 1 Corinthians 15:51-54  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,  (52)  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  (53)  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.  (54)  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.  (A new life, an eternal life, and a brand new body!)

5.  A Resurrection of Blessing - Revelation 20:6  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.  (I have been blessed in this life but that cannot compare to the blessings that await me in the life to come.  It is beyond our comprehension but not beyond our belief!)

1 Corinthians 2:9-10  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  (10)  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Conclusion:  Psalm 22, where a Cross becomes a Crown and our Saviour a Sovereign!
