The Majesty of the LORD

 Temple Baptist Church - 8-21-2022

Psalm 104:1-35

A.  A Psalm of David.  Psalm 104 begins just like Psalm 103 with “Bless the LORD, O my soul!”  It also continues with the words “O LORD my God.”  David had a very personal relationship with the LORD.  He was the only man in the Bible whose description was “a man after mine own heart.”

B.  As a “man after mine own heart,” David knew the LORD in a very wise and intimate way.  This Psalm gives us a beautiful picture of Who and What the LORD is.

Psalms 145:3-5  David’s Psalm of Praise. Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.  (4)  One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.  (5)  I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

The LORD’S greatness is unsearchable: cannot be fully known or understood by the human mind as God is a spirit: John 4:24  “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

C.  David, through the wording of the Holy Ghost, gives us this description of the LORD: Great, Honorable, and Majestic.  We know that He is great and honorable but I want to look at Majesty.

Majesty – Webster’s 1828 - Greatness of appearance; dignity; grandeur; dignity of aspect or manner; the quality or state of a person or thing which inspires awe or reverence in the beholder; applied with peculiar propriety to God and his works.

1.  Verses 1-2.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Person

a.  The Greatness of God – “thou art very great” – “Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised”

b.  The Garments of God – “thou are clothed with honour and majesty” Psalms 93:1  “The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.”

c.  The Glory of God – “Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment” - 1 Timothy 6:16  “Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.”

d.  Psalms 18:9-12  “He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet.  (10)  And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.  (11)  He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.  (12)  At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.”

2.  Verses 3-4.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Place

a.  His Surroundings – The heaven of heavens often called the third heaven.  The dwelling place of the LORD.  The city of the living God.

b.  His Spirits – “Innumerable company of angels”

c.  Hebrews 12:21-23  And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)  (22)  But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,  (23)  To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

3.  Verses 5-9.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Power

a.  His Creation – He laid the foundations of the earth and called the stars by name.

b.  His Control – He brought forth the waters and then made the waters recede and set their bounds that they cannot pass.

c.  Psalms 62:11  God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

4.  Verses 10-26.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Provision

a.  His Compassion for His creatures.  God loves His creatures and so does this pastor.  The LORD provides for the animals, the fish, and the fowl.

b.  His Care for His children.  We could camp out here for a while.  God is so good to all of us.

c.  2 Peter 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

5.  Verses 27-32.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Purpose

a.  The LORD’s Requirement – All of nature is in obedience to the LORD.

b.  The LORD’s Rejoicing – And everything that He made was very good.

c.  Ecclesiastes 3:1  To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

Verses 33-34.  The LORD’s Majesty is found in His Praise

a.  The Praise of Music

b.  The Praise of Meditation

c.  Psalms 19:14  Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

d.  Psalms 150:6  Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

Conclusion:  Verse 35: Our praise of God’s Majesty should be one of continuation Because one day our LORD will make all things eternally right.
