Ingratitude: The Christian’s Greatest Sin

Temple Baptist Church - 10-30-2019
Hebrews 10:25-31

Introduction:

A.  This has been a hard series for me to preach because of the seriousness and consequences pertaining to the “forsaking of ourselves together, as the manner of some is.”

B.  The farther we go in prophecy, the less emphasis we find being placed upon the local church and faithfulness to it.

C.  Last week, we looked at the seriousness of our forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.  The word “adversaries” should be enough to cause us to think!

D.  Tonight, I want to look at verse 29: the “WHY” of not forsaking.

1.  A Sin Against The Father – “trodden under foot the Son of God”

            2.  A Sin Against The Son – “blood…an unholy thing”

3.  A Sin Against The Holy Ghost – “despite unto the Spirit of grace” (shamefully entreat or to use despitefully)

E.  I want to look at these three things individually.

1.  A Sin Against The Father.  who hath trodden under foot the Son of God”

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1 John 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

a.  The Greatest Love Ever Known – “For God so loved the world.”

b.  The Greatest Love Ever Given – “He gave His only begotten Son.”

c.  The Greatest Love Ever Spurned – “trodden under foot the Son of God.”

2.  A Sin Against The Son.  and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing”

Ephesians 5:25-27  Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;  (26)  That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,  (27)  That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

a.  His Precious Blood.  1 Peter 1:18-19  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;  (19)  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

b.  His Purchasing Blood.  Acts 20:28  Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

c.  His Propitiatory Blood.  John 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

3.  A Sin Against The Holy Ghost.  and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace”

Despite – to abuse; to use despitefully; to treat shamefully; to insult.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20  What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?  (20)  For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

a.  Our Comforter.  John 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

b.  Our Security.  Ephesians 4:30  And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

c.  The Friend.  2 Corinthians 13:14  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

Conclusion:  The seriousness of the sin of forsaking is found in verse 31.

Hebrews 10:31  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
