Who Is This King Of Glory?

 Temple Baptist Church - 12-8-2024

Psalm 24

Introduction:

A.  Tonight, we will look at the last portion of the “Trilogy” that we have encountered, Psalm 22-23-24.

1.  Psalm 22 – The Cross of the Saviour.  The Good Shepherd gives His life for the Sheep.

a)  There is a division within the Psalm.  Verses 1-21, we find Christ on the Cross: The Payment Made.

b)  Verses 22-31, we find His glorious Resurrection.  The Completion of the Gospel: the death, burial, and resurrection.  A Finished Work!

1 Corinthians 15:3-4  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  (4)  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

2.  Psalm 23 – The Care of the Shepherd.  The Great Shepherd provides for His Sheep.

a)  From the moment of salvation, we are His and He is ours.  Oh, what a Saviour.

b)  He leads, He feeds, He comforts, He gives victory, He continues to be good and merciful to us,  and He will take us home to live with Him.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  (4)  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

3.  Psalm 24 – The Coming of the King of Glory.  The Chief Shepherd comes for His Sheep.  Christ loved us enough to die for us; Christ cares for us enough to take care of us throughout our lives and eternity; Christ will one day come for us to take us to His Eternal House.

B.  Now to answer the question: “Who is this King of Glory?”  When the Bible asks us a question, the Bible also gives us the answer to the question.  The reason being, God does not leave it up to us to reason for ourselves, God wants us to know the absolute truth on a question asked.

C.  The Psalm in its entirety answers the question.

1.  Verses 1-2.  Our Perspective. “Who is this King of Glory?”    He is a Sovereign King.  As sovereign, the King owns everything.  He does what He wills, How He wills, and When He wills!  He asks no advice and needs no help, and He makes no mistakes.

a.  Verse 1.  The Earth is the LORD’S!

1)  The LORD created it, and it belongs to Him.

Deuteronomy 10:14  Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

Psalms 89:11  The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

2)  Verse 1.  “And the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” This covers everything within the earth, everything on the earth, and everything in the air above the earth.  There is nothing that does not belong to the LORD!  You would do well to learn this principle.

Psalms 50:10-11  For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.  (11)  I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

Job 1:21  And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

b.  Verse 2.  He “founded it” and He “established it.”

1)  “For he Founded it upon the seas”  Founded: To create.  “Ex Nihilo.”

a)  God stepped out on nothing with nothing in His hand and said, “Let it be,” and it was so. The earth was without form and void because the seas covered the earth.

Psalms 33:9  For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

b)  The earth was covered then and later when God opened the heavens and open the earth during Noah’s Flood, the original waters once more covered the earth.

c)  God divided the waters that covered the earth into two portions with our atmosphere in the midst of them, thus uncovering the features of the earth.

Genesis 1:9-10  And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.  (10)  And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

2)  “And established it upon the floods”  Established: rendered sure.

a)  Before Naoh’s Flood, the earth probably had a canopy of water around it that kept the temperature constant as Adam and Eve were naked but comfortable and a mist went up out to the ground to water instead of rain.

b)  In Noah’s Day, God opened the heavens and the bowels of the earth, once again covering the earth with water as it was in its original state.

c)  When the waters asswaged at the end of the flood, the waters descended into the earth leaving the earth without the canopy and bringing about the four seasons mentioned in Genesis 8:22.

Genesis 8:22  While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

d)  At the end of the flood, God rendered it sure (established) by promising that the waters would never flood the earth again.

Genesis 9:15  And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

2.  Verses 3-6. “Who is this King of Glory?”  Our Approach.  He is a Holy King.

a.  Man’s Approach.  Verses 3-4.  “Who shall ascend … who shall stand.

James 4:8  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands (what you do), ye sinners; and purify your hearts (what you think), ye double minded.

1)  Clean Hands.  The things that man does.

Psalms 15:1-5  A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?  (2)  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.  (3)  He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.  (4)  In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.  (5)  He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

2)  Pure Hearts.  The things that man thinks.

Proverbs 23:7  For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Matthew 5:8  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Luke 6:45  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

3)  Blessed lives.  God, through Jesus Christ, allows mankind the opportunity to stand in His very presence, talk with Him, and allow Him to talk to them.

3.  Verses 7-10.  Our Expectancy. “Who is this King of Glory?”  The LORD’S Return.  He will come fo r His church in the Rapture, but these verses speak of His return to Jerusalem and the ascension to the throne of His father, David.  Five times in these last the words “King of glory” are used here.  He will come back as King of kings and LORD of lords in Revelation, chapter 19.  He will then reign on earth for 1,000 years.  Then in Revelation, chapter 21, we will find the “new heaven” and the “new earth” and the “New Jerusalem.”

Revelation 19:11-16  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.  (12)  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  (13)  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.  (14)  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.  (15)  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.  (16)  And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

a.  Verse 7, 9.  The Place of His Return.  Jerusalem in the Millenium.

Luke 1:32-33  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:  (33)  And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

b.  Verse 8, 10.  The Person of His Return.

1)  The King of Glory: the LORD: Strong, mighty, and victorious.

2)  The LORD of hosts.  “Hosts” – multiple people organized for war.

Exodus 15:3  The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

Isaiah 6:3-5  And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.  (4)  And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.  (5)  Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

c.  The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.

1)  This time, He will not come as babe in a manger.

2)  This time, He will not come as a Lamb of sacrifice.

3)  This time, we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is.

John 14:2-3  In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  (3)  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.  (For His Church in the Rapture and for His Kingdom and Israel.)
