A Restoration to His Former Glory

 Temple Baptist Church - 7-3-2024

John 17:1-5

Introduction:  Tonight, our Lord’s Second Petition: that He be restored to His former Glory.

A.  Two of the most important of all doctrines concerning the attributes of God is that of impeccability and immutability.  Without impeccability and immutability, our Lord could not possibly be restored to His former glory.  If God can do wrong or God can sin in any manner, He ceases to be completely righteous in His person.

1.  Impeccability defined: free from fault or blame; not capable of sinning or liable to sin.

Hebrews 4:15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

James 1:13  Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

James 1:17  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

1 John 1:5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

1 John 3:9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Therefore, God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) cannot sin!

2.  Immutability defined: not capable of or not susceptible to change.

Malachi 3:6  For I am the LORD (Jehovah), I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

B.  Three words used in these five verses:  glorify, used three times, glorified, used one time, and glory, used one time.  Glorify and glorified come from the same Greek word but the usage of these two words is marginally different because of tense.  Glorify and glorified are transitive verbs because both identify the One to give glory to.  All three usages come from the same root word

1.  Glorify and glorified defined:  to bestow honor, praise, and admiration; to elevate to celestial glory; to give glory in worship.

2.  Glory defined: Doxa from which we the word doxology.  Doxo—praise and logie—saying or praise.

C.  The Father glorified the Son by sending Him to be born of a virgin and identifying Him during His earthly ministry.

D.  The Son glorified the Father through suffering, dying, and resurrecting from the grave.

E.  Our Lord, in verse 5, asked the Father to glorify Him with the glory that He had with God in the beginning.  This “glory” was an original state before His incarnation and also a perpetual state of equality with the Father.

John 17:5  And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

F.  This shows that the glory of Jehovah God and the glory of a resurrected Jesus Christ are the same and, therefore His return to former Glory will also be the same!

1.  His Former Glory as Jehovah God.

a.  His Glory in Eternity past to the incarnation or First Advent – Palms 90:2  Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

Psalms 104:1-2  Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.  (2)  Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

1 Timothy 6:14-16  That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:  (15)  Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;  (16)  Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

b.  His Glory In Creation – Genesis 1:3-4  And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.  (4)  And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.  (The Light of God before natural or artificial light.)

2.  His Shekinah Glory as Jehovah God.  Shekinah is an English transliteration of a Hebrew word meaning a visible manifestation of God's presence on earth.

a.  His Glory At the Burning Bush – Exodus 3:4-6  And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.  (5)  And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.  (6)  Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

b.  His Glory On Mount Sinai – Exodus 19:18  And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

c.  His Glory Before Moses – Exodus 33:18-23  And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.  (19)  And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.  (20)  And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.  (21)  And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:  (22)  And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:  (23)  And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

d.  His Glory as The Pillar of Cloud and Fire – Exodus 13:21-22  And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:  (22)  He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

Exodus 14:19-20  And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:  (20)  And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

2.  His Glory is His Incarnation.

a.  The Glory of His Incarnation – the Glory of His Birth - John 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Luke 2:12-14  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  (13)  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,  (14)  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

b.  The Glory of His Person – the Glory of His Humanity - Hebrews 1:1-3  God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,  (2)  Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;  (3)  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

c.  The Glory of His Life – 2 Peter 1:17  For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

d.  The Glory of His Cross – Galatians 6:14  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

e.  The Glory of His Resurrection – Philippians 3:21  Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

f.  The Glory of His Gospel – 2 Corinthians 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

1 Timothy 1:11  According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

6.  His Restoration to His Former Glory.

a.  His Glory At the Rapture of His Church – Titus 2:13  Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

b.  His Glory At the Second Advent – Revelation 1:7  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

Revelation 19:11-13  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.  (12)  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  (13)  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

c.  His Eternal Glory – Revelation 22:5  And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Conclusion:  The Lord Jesus Christ has been restored to His former glory!

Hebrews 13:8  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
