The Lord’s Prayer - Part 3 - Salvation of the Believer

Temple Baptist Church - 6-26-2024

John 17:1-3

Introduction:

A.  As we continue through the Lord’s Prayer, I AM NOT IN A HURRY!

B.  There is so much in these few verses that it will take an eternity for us to fully grasp and understand them.

C.  It is here that we find the value of the pastor/teacher!

Ephesians 4:11-14  And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  (12)  For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:  (13)  Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:  (14)  That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

D.  Our Lord said a lot in these first 3 verses that need to be digested along with things unsaid that need to be addressed!  I want everyone to see what I am saying as we travel through the prayer.

1.  These first 3 verses are often mis-interpreted because of a lack of understanding of the truths established in other places that are not expressed here.  They are things that should be understood to the Bible student as they are well documented elsewhere.

2.  The Father gives the believer to Jesus Christ the Son who gives the believer eternal life.  There is no mention of the two Agents that point the unsaved to God the Father and then to the Son: the Spirit of God and the Word of God.

3.  One of the misunderstandings concerning these first three verses is that of the Calvinist.  They believe the Father gives the elect to the Son for salvation and eternality of spiritual life.  I am not here tonight to unravel the ignorance of Calvinism.

4.  Scripture MUST be interpreted with other Scripture!  2 Peter 1:20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

E.  In these verses, there are two things that are not mentioned that are essential to the eternal life of the believer: the Spirit of God and the Word of God.

1.  Only the Father and the Son are mentioned here.  Why?

2.  Because the Lord’s Prayer is not about the act of people getting saved, it is about the people who are already saved and will forever be saved in the future.

3.  This prayer is between God the Father and God the Son.  It is about the eminent death of Christ on the cross and His care for His children left behind as well as those who will later be saved.  It is not an explanation of how to be saved.

F.  The two thing that are essential to salvation that are not mentioned here are the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

G.  Salvation’s order is simple.

1.  The Word of God.  Given to us by the Holy Ghost.  2 Peter 1:20-21  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  (21)  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

a.  The Word of God is given to us by the Spirit of God to introduce the unsaved to the true and living God.

b.  It was also given to lead the believer into a life of faith and holiness through the knowledge of God.

Philippians 3:8-10  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,  (9)  And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:  (10)  That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

c.  Faith is found in the Word of God.  Romans 10:14-17  How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  (15)  And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!  (16)  But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?  (17)  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

d.  Faith in the Father is found in the Word of God.  Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

e.  Faith in the Saviour is found in the Word of God.  Hebrews 10:7  Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

f.  Faith in the Gospel is found in the Word of God.  Romans 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

g.  Thus, faith found in the Word of God is essential to salvation!

2.  The Spirit of God.  His work is to introduce God the Father to the unsaved, introduce the Saviour to the unsaved, convict the sinner of sinfulness, and convince the sinner that the righteousness of God is the only to eternal salvation and heaven.

John 16:7-11  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.  (8)  And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:  (9)  Of sin, because they believe not on me;  (10)  Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;  (11)  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

a.  “he will reprove the world of sin … Of sin, because they believe not on me” To convicted of sin.  A person will never get saved until they see themselves lost!

b.  The Sin that damns the sinner is the sin of unbelief.  “Of sin, because they believe not on me.”  People who do not know that they are lost see no need for salvation.

John 3:17-18  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  (18)  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

c.  To convince the sinner of God’s righteousness.  “he will reprove the world … of righteousness … Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more” Only God’s righteousness can save the lost.

Romans 10:3  For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

The righteous of salvation comes only through Christ.  A person will never be saved until he realizes that only the righteousness of Christ can save.

Romans 6:4  For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

d.  To convince the sinner of the judgment to come, both temporal and eternal.  (Revelation 20:11-15)

e.  The Spirit of God points the sinner to God.  Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

3.  The Father.  God the Father gave His only Begotten Son.

a.  The drawn sinner must come to the Father in Faith and Repentance.

b.  A faith that the Father gives – “cometh to God must believe that He is!”

Romans 12:3  For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.Begotten

c.  A Repentance that the Father grants – “He is a rewarder of them”  A rewarder of salvation or a rewarder of sin”

Acts 11:17-18  Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?  (18)  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Granted – bestowed or delivered

d.  It is at this point that the Father gives the believer to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Verse 2: “As thou (the Father) hast given him (the Son)

4.  The Son of God. God the Son became our Propitiation.  John 17:2b - 3 “power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

a.  The Father gave Absolute Power of Jesus Christ the Son over all flesh.

1) The Son had absolute power over His own flesh.

2 Corinthians 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Hebrews 7:26  For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

1 John 3:5  And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

1 Peter 2:21-22  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:  (22)  Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

2)  The Son has absolute power over the flesh of the saved to judge their sins.

1 Corinthians 15:51-54  Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,  (52)  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.  (53)  For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.  (54)  So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

Jude 24-25  Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,  (25)  To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

3)  The Son has absolute power of the flesh of the unsaved to judge their sins.

Revelation 20:11-13  And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.  (12)  And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.  (13)  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

b.  Jesus Christ works with the Father and the Holy Ghost in absolute power over life eternal.

John 10:27-30  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:  (28)  And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.  (29)  My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.  (30)  I and my Father are one.

Ephesians 1:13-14  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,  (14)  Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
